carne asada, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

When I was a kid, I made a weekly trip to Wawa to pick up a bunch of 5-cent York Peppermint Patties and Reese's Cups.

dammit velko beat me to it

the absence of wawas = why north jersey is inferior to south jersey.

aw i miss picking up tastykakes from wawa

Don't Be A Ned Raggett (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 30 August 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)

(Why would anyone want to be me anyway. One is enough!)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 30 August 2009 13:04 (sixteen years ago)

i hate sheetz

permanent response lopp (harbl), Sunday, 30 August 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

(It's partly a homage to your good self and party a homage to the Beastie Boys' original title for "Licensed to Ill", Neddy!) (xp)

Don't Be A Ned Raggett (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 30 August 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

I need to reaffirm if Sheetz has an "extra mayo" button on their sandwich computer but if it doesn't I think that settles the debate right there.

da croupier, Sunday, 30 August 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

After spending two and a half years in Philly I'm pretty sure Wawas is sponsoring my arteries even now.

da croupier, Sunday, 30 August 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

fuck sheetz.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

Sheetz is ridiculous.

I miss Wawa. I haven't been to one since they instituted this touch-screen hoagie ordering system, which sounds delightful.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

amazingly it hasn't stopped the employees from still fucking up every other sandwich.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

i once had an Wawa employee mock my gluttonously topped hoagie. wtf, junkie, you live behind a wall of potato chips, put more more mayo on my death meal.

da croupier, Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

to be fair i also had one say "daaaaamn, that looks good!" She knew what time it was.

da croupier, Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

to my utter shame i've been ordering the turkey with light mayo lately for "health" reasons.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

i plan on having one more death hoagie around the time of my bachelor party but otherwise i'm retired

da croupier, Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

Sigh. I want a hoagie.* I was trying to explain to my mother how there are no sweet peppers in Chicago and she was all puzzled and confused, like, "Well what do you eat, then?"

*or a sub, really, which is my only problem with Wawa, that they force their sandwich terminology on their customers.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

Really I want a sub from Capriotti's but if somebody showed up at my door with a shorti hoagie with turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, pickles, sweet peppers, o&v from Wawa I would cry with gratitude.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

Really I want a sub from Capriotti's

^^^ real talk.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

i grew up in a pocket of jersey where hoagie is the dominant term

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

so i never really had a problem

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

when i was in maryland with a bunch of friends from california i took them all to a wawa and they were almost crying they were so amazed

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

no-fee atms

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

FUCKIN A

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

will seriously walk a mile out of my way for this.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

i grew up in a pocket of jersey where hoagie is the dominant term

princeton?

Julie & Julius Rosenberg (donna rouge), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

always not-so-secretly jealous that south jersey has all the wawas, 7-eleven ain't shit

Julie & Julius Rosenberg (donna rouge), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

f yeah

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

it is the dominant term everywhere south of princeton.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

you have to go below wilmington, delaware and above new brunswick to enter "sub" territory.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

in some parts of new england they call em grinders

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

every time i had to order a "sub" in baltimore i died a little inside

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

hoagie is a super fun word but id feel kinda weird actually using it - took me a while to get used to hero

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

yeah north of NYC theyre mostly called grinders iirc

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

regardless of what theyre called and where theyre the greatest sandwich type mankind has ever known and wawas ability to mass produce them on such a consistent scale deserves some kind of congressional medal imo

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

dunno what i meant by such a consistent scale but u catch my drift

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

prob sub will just become standard everywhere eventually - like in boston a lot of places still listed them as grinders but everyone my age called them subs

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

i know people in california that have reverse engineering "sub sandwich" into "subway sandwich" from the whiney g weingarten-approved chain "subway"

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

never been to wawa - looks nice tho

ice cr?m, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

i gotta say there's a philly/south jersey/dela area chain named primo that has maybe the best chain-related sandwiches i've ever tasted.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

'wawa' sounds weird to me tho

― iatee, Sunday, August 30, 2009 3:05 PM

and 'sheetz' sounds totally normal and appetizing

am0n, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

lol

am0n, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i meant "mass scale consistently" i just... put all the words in the wrong order

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

i used to have a hat from wawa that said "my choice, my wawa" and a girl told me she thought it was about abortion and "wawa" was slang for womb or something

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

wawa sounds like it should be a finnish children's clothing store or something

iatee, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

it would not have to change its logo either

iatee, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

gotta go 2 to the wawa clinic

am0n, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

why is it called wawa?

permanent response lopp (harbl), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

was it named by a baby?

fleetwood (max), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

wawa is the transliteration of the noise a goose makes

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

when my philly-born freshman year roommate asked me if we had a wawa i was all "baby gaga goo-goo?" but that's cuz psu just has local chains and sheetz :(

da croupier, Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

Our "joke" was that Wawa was the convenience store for people too drunk to say "Seven Eleven."

she is writing about love (Jenny), Sunday, 30 August 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

i am too lazy to walk to buy a hoagie right now. but i am thinking of one. you can be assured of this.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Sunday, 30 August 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

the thing I love about Wawa hoagies is that by the time they make it and deliver it to you, the bread is already soggy

tony dayo (dyao), Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

unless you get it toasted

tony dayo (dyao), Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

also, that the 6" is called a shorti

tony dayo (dyao), Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

shorti + 99 cent bag of herr's sour cream and onion + icee...yeah

btw wawa, keep fighting the good fight and not giving in to the slushee/slush puppy brigade

tony dayo (dyao), Sunday, 30 August 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

really sad whiney is not here for this thread, rip

stfuhut (k3vin k.), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

also I realize I've turned into one of those "homie from philly" dudes who feels the need to represent philly in every locale he goes to...RIP veneer of sarcasm and jadedness

tony dayo (dyao), Monday, 31 August 2009 00:43 (sixteen years ago)

Just noticed that I am out of dish detergent, thought oh well, I will skip the proper cereal/juice breakfast and avail myself of my usual Wawa emergency b'fast (iced mocha and a hash brown) and had the crushing realization that my new ap't means I no longer have a Wawa on the way to work. Seriously considering getting up 20 minutes early to make this happen even though it's almost four in the fucking AM right now and I desperately need any and all sleep I can get.

(YES the hash browns ARE THAT GOOD)

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Monday, 31 August 2009 07:32 (sixteen years ago)

nine months pass...

A friend of mine is complaining on his Facebook page that Wawas in his neck of the woods (Toms River, NJ) are now making their coffee in large vats -- which, in his opinion, makes them taste worse (the coffee is left to sit out longer making it more bitter, vats aren't kept as clean as coffee pots, etc). He says that he has noticed that the taste of Wawa's coffee has gotten worse at several stores, in fact.

about as twee as a being beaten with a phone book (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

actually, i'm sorry ... my friend lives in Pottstown, PA. he travels to Toms River for work about once a week.

about as twee as a being beaten with a phone book (Eisbaer), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

I noticed this at one of the Wawas near me - the large vats are thermally insulated, so I guess it will take less energy to keep the coffee warm. I can imagine a scenario where they just keep topping off the vat and never actually replace it with a fresh batch.

I've been going to Heritages for coffee recently because every sixth cup is free.

I do miss Wawas a little. Hard to explain their mystique to the unfamiliar.

confusion is a walrus (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 03:56 (fifteen years ago)

I wish there was a Wawa further west than Lancaster. Both Sheetz and Rutter's are pale imitations of the majesty of a Wawa.

love wawa! one of the perks of going to "down tha shore" in the summer

Aerosol, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

Shit, I lived in Pottstown, PA for 3 months between Royersford, PA and NJ! Place is wack. I noticed the Wawa coffee vats too, but I paid little notice since I haven't really drank their coffee since they got rid of the caramel. With french vanilla creamer, it was oooooohh <3 <3 <3.

Is Heritage's coffee any good?

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

aren't you going to find out soon!

yo stevie d are there any good family owned restaurants in south jersey. rev making me feel bad on the suburbs thread

⚖ on my truck (dyao), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

there are times when a person needs a hoagie at 9am in Philly and god bless Wawa for making that a possibility
