Garden State (2004) Sideways (2004) Little Miss Sunshine (2006) Juno (2007)
How did this shit start?

This is like the movie equivalent of a Sigur Ros album
kindly remove sideways from that list, sir

These films are simply a sub-species of the larger genre of horseshit movies. There is nothing special about them except where they fish for an audience.

I liked Little Miss Sunshine. It didn't have that self-conscious "I'm so cute and hip and clever" vibe that made Garden State and Juno so irritating. It was basically just a family movie, but with more interesting characters. Also, I liked that the little girl in was just an ordinary little girl, not this sort smart-assed semi-adult prodigy that kids in these sort of movies tend to be.

― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 August 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)
I enjoyed LMS and Juno. There is such a dearth of well-made, entertaining (albeit slight) movies in this world, and I am just interested in being entertained for a couple of hours on a Friday night. I could give two shits who else might be watching the movie and who some cynical studio huckster sees as the target audience.
I'm tired of dismissing things because of what I think they represent, rather than just enjoying them for what they are.

― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)
when a middle school teacher who is also a weekday drunk and general lowlife is actually a v. sensitive artist with a novel that no editor can see the brilliance of it is twee imo.
Wait, is that the plot of sideways? It does read like a story-within-the-song from Belle and Sebastian's Tigermilk.
― Cunga, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 06:54 (sixteen years ago)
And what are the common characteristics in these movies that drive you guys nuts? As others have said, a lot of the films listed are technically quite different from one another.
― Cunga, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 07:03 (sixteen years ago)
does "Kids Are All Right" belong here?
― buzza, Monday, 12 July 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)
I just saw the trailer for that, and, while I don't think it looks amazing, it seems like it may be the first relatively wide-release American film that centers on a lesbian nuclear family, and I feel like it deserves some credit for that.
― surfer blood for oil (Hurting 2), Monday, 12 July 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
it's been getting great reviews, was wondering if there's going to be a backlash
― buzza, Monday, 12 July 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
It's definitely the movie equivalent of a book club book. But I find a genuine backlash hard to believe unless you mean one coming from the more radical part of the lesbian community.
― surfer blood for oil (Hurting 2), Monday, 12 July 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)
no, more that any decent indie flick tends to get overrated because it's put in opposition to cgi flix and then a modest film gets sort of blown up and then people expect too much from it....or something
― buzza, Monday, 12 July 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)
500 days of summer is definitely the worst in this case. oh wow he listens to the smiths. so indie.

I think it's possible that part of the lyric is not heard in The Graduate, btw, bcz it wan't written yet. Nichols asked S&G for some music in the climax and they just stuck the name "Mrs Robinson" into an unfinished song.
― Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:51 (fourteen years ago)
Sideways wasn't bad, but youd have to strap me in a chair to get me to watch the other 3 films in Whiney's 1st post btw
― Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:53 (fourteen years ago)
I've probably seen The Graduate 25 times, but I had to double-check--you're right, no Joe DiMaggio. The relevant section (start around 6:30):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5gb79X2ZG8&feature=related
I think it is the template for films like Garden State (so-so example) and Rushmore (superior example)--it, The Sterile Cuckoo, The Heartbreak Kid, and a few others. Not for Sideways, though.
― clemenza, Saturday, 28 January 2012 13:52 (fourteen years ago)
I love the Graduate but hated GS. Rushmore is pretty good although I'm not the biggest WA fan. Did not like sideways. I haven't seen the others.
― ENBB, Saturday, 28 January 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)
Not that you asked. lol.
Whatever one thinks about Sideways--I liked it a lot the first time, a little less when I went back--it doesn't belong with all these other films for the simple reason that it's about middle-aged people (also, music plays no appreciable role that I can remember). I think you can make a case that Sideways and Broken Flowers and Lost in Translation are where the Benjamin Braddocks end up one day, but that's a little different. (One thing I love about Rushmore is that it--loosely speaking--pits Jason Schwartzman's Ben Jr. vs. Bill Murray's Ben Sr.)

I haven't seen "Garden State," but there isn't anything twee about the other three movies on that list. "Little Miss Sunshine" was smug and twee is not smug. "Juno" was sarcastic and twee is not sarcastic. OK, to be honest, I don't remember very much about "Sideways," but it was about middle age, wasn't it? So I don't think it could be twee because twee denies the existence of middle age.
