What is yer broadband speed and how does one go about making it faster?

iPlayer keeps freezing for me (mainly evening viewing), so I used Speedtest to test the speed of my broadband connection, and got the following results:

<a href="http://www.speedtest.net";><img src="http://www.speedtest.net/result/314141861.png";></a>

My IPS is BT, and it is a rather shitty download speed. I'm not too savvy about these things - how could I make it faster?

Sorry, this link might work:

What happens if you use the other server (not Maidenhead, that looks extremely slow) ?

StanM, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

That's not a shitty download speed, dude.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Upload is a bit suck.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, sorry. I thought StanM was being helpful.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

i got 3985 down 853 up (Beating Stan!) but I have no idea when upload speed comes in handy for me.

Ludo, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

Curiously, StanM, this is what the results look like with the non-recommended server - higher download, lower upload speeds?

libcrypt, do you mean my download (with router incidentally, and on a brand new iMac) is not shitty or StanM's?

I've had no other problems - I wouldn't have noticed the low speed if it hadn't been for Charlie and Lola freezing on iPlayer.

Tongham Hobbs, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

that second server's ping is a lot better, but your upload is even slower there :-(

StanM, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

5k down/1k up

The upload speed is very handy for sending magazine files to the printer in Missouri.

Sorry Hobbs; I thought StanM was fixing yr broken post.

In any case, the best thing for you to do is call yr ISP and say "halp; my Internet is broke!" Explain yr symptoms and show them the speed test. If they can't make fixies, then get a new ISP.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry for the confusion, I usually tend to help people but I didn't this time :-)

StanM, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

Since we're all comparing length, suck on this one:

The server in Latvia is 6 times quicker for me than the server in Maidenhead.

There is a longstanding problem with the combination of Mac + BT + iPlayer, which seems finally to have been sorted on the new Home Hub.

Oslo just beat Dublin for me. Maidenhead sucked serious balls.

oh dear, 0range Broadband...

...maybe if they stopped making stupid TV commercials they could get on this? TBF, the SMTP e-mail server problem seems to be fixed.
