i have a mac. it asks me annoying things too sometimes.

akm, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose if you use Firefox you get the same "update to the latest version" pop-up that I just got. Which I clicked "later" on, because I know it'll ask me to close all open browser windows blah blah blah five minutes later, etc..

snoball, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

i got that earlier, updated to version 3 and it wiped all my bookmarks

failfox amirite

DG, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the heads up, I'll avoid updating until they fix that

snoball, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

there was some OSX server security update that apparently reset or wiped all the permissions they'd set up for half our office. It's entirely likely they (they being our IT people) did something wrong though

akm, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

I just turn off XP auto updates as soon as I start off with a new PC and OS. If I need updates I'll bloody well get them myself.

I've finally come around to doing this, having had to re-install XP on 2 different occasions when the fucking thing started going wrong immediately after doing a big update. Now it can just sit there being un-updated (though it keeps nagging me about this--anyone know how to turn that off?)

James Morrison, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

how do i turn off xp auto-update?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno how to stop it nagging about it being turned off/reminding me to update but it doesnt do so for me. I wish I could remember how I did it!

I think it is somewhere in the control panel system settings... or I might have used TweakUI, Im not sure.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

csa, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)

always restart later

cozwn, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)

At least now when you change network settings in Windows you don't have to reboot. I always hated that when I was working as a field technician, because I'd have to reboot once for the new settings to take effect, then reboot again to make sure that the settings had taken properly. But if a client was looking over my shoulder the whole reboot-reboot thing made it look as though I didn't know what I was doing.

snoball, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

One of the annoying hassles that made me leave the field, having to constantly appear appropriately busy...

i've been ignoring an osx update notice for over a week now :)

DG, Thursday, 28 August 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

about 6 months for me - i steal crappy wi-fi, and it'd take all day

skygreenleopard, Friday, 29 August 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ this links in to what Nhex posted - I got sick of having to find subtle ways to tell the client that I could only work as fast as the computer, and if they has POS slow garbage then it was going to take longer to do stuff, and that was not necessarily an indication of laziness/slacking on my part.

snoball, Friday, 29 August 2008 07:59 (seventeen years ago)

"I just turn off XP auto updates as soon as I start off with a new PC and OS. If I need updates I'll bloody well get them myself."

This is more acceptable now most people have the XP firewall, but before thay you were leaving yourself open to 0 day exploits and if you use IE then you still kind of are.

Jarlrmai, Friday, 29 August 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

what does the ps3 updates keep adding? i see no improvement in performance, do they all just think we're all systems admins and love to keep updating our systems. I WANT TO PLAY GAMES NOT STARE AT A PROGRESS BAR EVERYTIME I LOG IN

Ste, Friday, 29 August 2008 12:26 (seventeen years ago)

sorry about the woeful english and sentence structure there, but surely you're used to it by now :)

Ste, Friday, 29 August 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

They should make a game for the Wii called "stare at a bloody progress bar", because I'm sure they feel left out, what with their updates that actually, you know, add useful functions to the console.

(xpost) Not that I really have a valid opinion on console gaming, because the last console I had was a Dreamcast. Good luck waiting on updates for that one.

snoball, Friday, 29 August 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man Progress Quest! I laughed like an exceptionally geeky drain at that when a friend pointed me at it a year ago... and now I can do so again! Awesomes.

Oh, and click "later" about three times until it pops up unnoticed while I'm typing thunderously and I realise how perilously close I came to hitting Y or whichever key would reboot, so then it is time to head to command prompt and type

net stop "automatic updates"
(which turns off the reminders until next boot, or you restart it).

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 29 August 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

worst scenario, clicking on 'restart now' then walking off to make brew, come back five mins later to screen that says 'are you sure y/n?'

Ste, Friday, 29 August 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

I just drag the "Restart Now" dialog box to the bottom right corner of the screen by the time and then it doesn't pop up any more

I've seen plenty of XP machines run for months on end. I run mine for weeks without crashes - I shut down occasionally to cool it off tho, the laptop gets a bit overheated.

Vista always restarted itself WITHOUT ASKING ME until I found the setting that forces it to fucking stop doing that. Now it merely annoys the shit out of me.
