Worse Than Homeless On Bus

Happy frat/business guy on bus telling you that homeless are "the city's worst problem", and that "if this was Guatemala, we could put them in work prison for a year." This his way, apparently, of making friends. I am really sorry, guy, for not punching you in the head.

friendly idiots who make offensive "observations" as conversational ice-breakers are basically the worst kind of people

gbx, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

"if this was Guatemala, we'd probably be kidnapped!"

dan m, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

They happiness made it worse, somehow. Creepier. It conveyed his certainty that I, a fellow working man, could not help but share his views.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

Did you tell him that if this was Canada you'd have beheaded him already?

i was at a bar a few weekends ago (some "english" themed place downtown....brit's?) and while i was there a guy dressed as a cop came in and did a striptease for some hen party. which was funny! but then, inexorably, some friendly drunk guy in line leaned into me and said, nicely, "can you believe this faggot? ha!" not sure if he said "amirite," but he may as well have. i just shrugged \(°_o)/ and turned to buy a beer

gbx, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah, plz don't make me complicit in yr worldview, dickhead

gbx, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

gbx OTM. Like the friendly guy in the bar who tried to tell me that, based on his field experience, "in Japan, all sex is basically rape."

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

There was a drunk dude trying to tell me jokes about Mexicans and black people in a bar a few weeks ago. I kept pretending I didn't understand the punchlines, making him try to explain them out. Finally he got pissed off and was like "BECAUSE BLACK PEOPLE LIKE BASKETBALL!" and left us alone.

dan m, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

(it was doubly o_O b/c it was in a black-owned bar and my neighborhood is like 60% hispanic)

dan m, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

"basically" is the helper word

strange, autistic-seeming man on the bus today. first he harassed an elderly lady by asking whether she was jewish or italian, then progressed into intimating that she was somehow reading his mind with a strange sort of feverish not-quite-hostility. i intervened to take the heat off her, after which he grilled me for quite some time about variety strangeness (including telepathy and computers). he peppered his queries with jokes about the "world's shortest book": "the big book of jewish atheletes", "the big book of black scientists". i tried to indicate that i didn't care to hear such jokes, but that only made him explain them in more detail: "it's because there aren't that many black scientists, see?"

never know how to extricate myself from crazy people situations.

four years pass...

New Horizon Youth Centre, a day centre in central London that tries to find emergency accommodation for vulnerable young people in crisis situations, said staff distributed bus tickets on a regular basis, and gave young people details about the best routes looping around the capital through the night, so they could have a safe place to sleep.

The charity is unable to help the growing numbers of young people to find emergency accommodation, a problem it attributes to rising rents, a reduction in the number of hostel places, reductions in benefit payments, and changes in the ways local authorities fund hostels, obliging young people to have a local connection to be eligible for a place.
