Weiner wraps

So any of us that ate meat as a child probably have fond memories of the school lunch weiner wrap.

This was a hot dog fully baked into a bun not unlike a dinner roll in consistency.

So I have tried to recreate these at home (using Pillsbury pizza dough). Pretty disappointing.

Looking online today, I see people are making weiner wraps out of hot dogs in tortillas, egg roll wraps, and all sorts of other WRONG forms of dough.

If you recall the golden era of weiner wraps, and know how to make a good one--hook a brother up!

bagel dogs = yum.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

Bagel dogs are good, but the weiner wrap I grew up with was a dog completely encased in dough.

If I can see the little end poking out--I know it's not the same thing!

it's a pretty harsh condemnation of sex education in american public schools if you're using a bagel dog as a prophylactic, slocki.

man people round me growin up would put hot dogs in a taco and call it a "sausage wrap" like who are you kidding

they serve hot dogs wrapped in pizza dough at many pizzerias here. the ends are sticking out, though, and it's probably not the consistency you're looking for. there are hot dog buns in some of the bakeries in chinatown also, but i have never had one. i opt for the pork bun.

i thought these were called "pigs in a blanket"

ryan, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

did anybody ever see those spherical weiners called 'ball dogs'? I saw them once in the supermarket, but the internet bears no trace of them.

"i thought these were called "pigs in a blanket""

I think they were called that in certain parts of the country (according to my friend from Texas...).

But a proper Pig in a Blanket is a breakfast sausage wrapped in a pancake, right?

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

Around here, a pig in a blanket seems to be a tiny, bite-size version of the mature weiner wrap. Like made with small sausages, breakfast or otherwise.

How is it that old women in school cafeterias know culinary secrets beyond the reach of the entire internet?

Who would have thought the humble sausage roll could acquire such an air of mystery and intrigue in far-off lands.

I'm not sure about the meat, but the dough looks really different, which is pretty key.

sausage rolls are puff pastry. always.

Wiener wraps were a mainstay of the school lunches I ate in elementary school in the 1960s here in Portland. A rather salty, but delicious, mainstay. Lunch lines were much longer on wiener wrap days.
