I can think of anything that I would use this on
you?

Sometimes, such as when tired, I'll see or imagine something out of the corner of my eye that seems impossible -- an article of clothing mistaken for a looming presence, movement where no movement is can be, that sort of thing -- and it will scare me half to death. In part, I think such fear is a mental rejection of the unnatural, the impossible, a thing that violates the rules of reality as I understand it.

yes.
do you mean 'can't', cozwn?

i think acting, or posing for pictures even, lends itself to this criticism
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
Also strange variations on familiar consumer products. Like when they change the Trix Rabbit.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)
so does the flavor of the lemon juice in those little yellow plastic ballies
― remy bean, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)
they're changing the Trix Rabbit???
OMY remy soooo otm
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)
i can't think of a good use of this either.
― goole, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, implied context, there isn't any human behavior that offendeth mine eye in its Godless unnaturalism.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)
the only thing i can think of is about, wait for it, transportation, where we've effectively subsidized one mode really heavily at the expense of all the others. so driving seems totally 'natural' even though it's a crap way to get around in so many ways.

"we" meaning americans in general
i have used this, and felt this, in reference to transgender surgery.

Religion.

Re: goole on transportation. Suggests another: sometimes, when I'm in a particularly flashbacky frame of mind, the sight of endless hills, really densely packed with suburban houses will seem strangely unnatural to me, like an architectural cancer.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)
I think I only use it in Surmounter's sense and Goole's sense:
Surm's = "This attempt to imitate nature isn't working; it doesn't seem natural."
Goole's = "This thing we do as a matter of course is actually very strange and artificial and constructed, not some obvious development for the human animal."

oh yes like sitting in an office chair all day!
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)
my friend thinks that flying in an airplane is unnatural (and only takes the train as a result). i think this is really weird, especially since he's an engineer.

Only in a positive way.

xpost: Another good one. Every once in a while I manage to bend my head around the familarity of powered flight to realize just how unlikely it that giant metal tubes would be able to hurl themselves into the sky AND STAY THERE. Mostly, though, it seems pretty ordinary/natural.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)
if it happens in the known universe, it's all natural baby

― Thomas, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
everything we do that no other animal does bain't natural
― blueski, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)
You cannot go against nature. Because when you do. Go against nature. That's part of nature too.
Woo-hoo-hoo.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)
Precisely what I was thinking, Kate.
― Michael White, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
I'm with contenderizer in tending to get the willies at peripheral sensations of *the impossible*, that which doesn't seem to make any sense given my understanding of the laws of the universe. They feel"unnatural" in a very real sense.
