Hannah?

Mark G, Thursday, 28 August 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

I lived about 1/2 way between Missoula and Kalispell (ie, true middle of nowhere) and also in Whitefish but only for a month or so. Kalispell gets my vote b/c Missoula was too much of an attention whore.

I might be movin' to Montana soon
Just to raise me up a crop of Dental Floss Raisin' it up
Waxen it down
In a little white box
I can sell uptown
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss,
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I just might grow me some bees
But I'd leave the sweet stuff
For somebody else...
but then, on the other hand
I'd Keep the wax N' melt it down
Pluck some Floss N' swish it aroun'
I'd have me a crop
An' it'd be on top

(that's why I'M movin' to Montana)

Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a Dental Floss tycoon
(yes I am)
Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a mennil-toss flykune
I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
That's growin' on the prairie
Pluckin' the floss!
I plucked all day an' all nite an' all Afternoon...
I'm ridin' a small tiny hoss
(His name is MIGHTY LITTLE)
He's a good hoss
Even though He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
Any way I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
Even if you think it is a little silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I'm gonna find me a horse
Just about this big
An' ride him all along the border line
With a Pair of heavy-duty
Zircon-encrusted tweezers in my hand
Every other wrangler would say
I was mighty grand
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I might Ride along the border
With my tweezers gleamin'
In the moon-lighty night
And then I'd Get a cuppa cawfee
N' give my foot a push...
Just me 'n the pymgy pony
Over the Dennil Floss Bush
N' then I might just Jumb back on
An' ride Like a cowboy
Into the dawn to Montana
Movin' to Montana soon

Missoula, Montana always makes me think of Twin Peaks.

Abbott, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

my sweetheart is in Whitefish this week, so I'm voting Whitefish.

Drew Daniel, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

where to start?

missoula is one of the most beautiful places i've ever visited

butte was sold to me as being the town that time forgot, which proved to be pretty accurate. the glaciers are still melting, and the goldminers are still digging, as far as i can tell

bozeman seemed like a boring college town which just happened to be situated in a beautiful part of the world. snowboarding is great and all, but take your dave matthews ass back to va

dell, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

buttes lol

harbl, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

No Havre?!

Casuistry, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I grew up in Hamilton. We would drive to Missoula to go to the mall, when malls were first invented. Then we would drive to Missoula to watch MTV when MTV was first invented. I haven't been to my home town but I hear it's become a paved strip of casinos, box stores and meth tragedy.

Whitefish if pretty like my town, but I had to vote Missoula. Rockin' Rudy's is there...

Maria :D, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

been to my home town LATELY, that is

Maria :D, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

I'm so excited for the results!

Where at? I visit that area every few years or so. (Family friends in Polson) Kind of an interesting spot to be a tourist.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

I posted a link upthread. It about 20 miles due east of Polson, but across the mountains, so not close at all.

Jesse, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

You can move to Montana and listen to Santana but you still won't be as cool as Sha-na-na

ILX System, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

i've only been to butte and missoula. crashed with a nice high school kid and his family in butte, they made us waffles in the morning. i think there's a big statue of jesus on a mountain there? it felt like the town in 'october sky.'

missoula was pretty cool, sort of an aspirational portland w/ a desperate edge. this was where i found out: "an open container can be stored in a locked glove compartment" in montana.

Matt P, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty minimal voting :/

Who else voted for Kalispell?

Things that happen in Montana:
http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2009/01/29/news/local/news04.txt

An Oklahoma woman froze to death and her common-law husband was rescued from a similar fate by Powell County law officers after winter caught the two unprepared in a shack high in the Garnet Mountains.

Mickey Charlene Davis, 67, had probably been dead for 12 to 14 days when authorities reached the site between Interstate 90 and Helmville just before midnight on Jan. 13, according to Powell County Sheriff Scott F. Howard.

Howard and a deputy found Jack L. McWhorter, 44, starving, hypothermic and “cabin-fevered up” upon reaching the remote site.
McWhorter sat on the floor, propped against his wife's body with an array of weapons spread in a half-circle in front of him.

“I don't know if he was worried about us. ... I don't know what was going through his head,” said Howard.

The officers transported the Oklahoma man by snowmobile more than 20 miles to waiting deputies, who rushed him to Powell County Memorial Hospital. McWhorter was released after several days, and is recuperating in a Deer Lodge apartment.

He intends to move back to Oklahoma when he's able, Howard said. McWhorter declined Wednesday to discuss his ordeal, which Howard guessed began around Thanksgiving.

“It's pretty emotional right now, and he just doesn't feel like talking about it,” the sheriff said.

Two small dogs and a cat were dead inside the shack when officers arrived. The only survivor besides McWhorter was a large dog that was protective of Davis. Howard estimated it was three-quarters wolf.

Is Missoula really just a bunch of Trustafarians and meth addicts or is there anything cool there?

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen a live-electronica-sorta band from Missoula a couple times that I liked: Signal Path. They could be trustafarians or meth heads, I dunno...

I spent the night in a REALLY decrepit motel in Miles City once. Didn't realize until the next morning that about 75% of the units appeared to be condemned/falling in on themselves. The torn naugahyde headboard was a nice touch, as was the toilet that rocked back and forth on its flooring. And there was a Soul Asylum sticker on the door!

I've been thinking about taking a trip to Montana. Originally I'd thought of Billings or Bozeman, but friends who've been there are selling my hardcore on the NW part of the state because I'm a sucker for OMG SO PRETTY, so now I'm thinking Missoula or Kalispell or Whitefish. Anyone got any recs?

Who else voted for Kalispell?

Couldn't have been me. My only vivid memory of Kalispell is from 1963 when I was 8. My family drove through on a long summer trailer trip and the local supermarket had an enormous cartoon painted on its front window of a grinning pickaninny eating a slice of watermelon as a way of advertising that it had watermelons for sale. I'd never seen anything like it before. My parents were hugely embarrassed when I asked them to explain it.

Like the song says:

Ride around little dogies, ride around real slow.
You know that Montana will be your new home.
Ride around little dogies, ride around real slow.
It's your misfortune and none of my own.

Montana has a lot of beauty. It also has a lot of redneck ignorance and old-fashioned racism.
