I think I wanted an earing when I was 9 or something. And a mohawk. And I wanted to change my name to Aaron because I thought having two As in a row looked cool and because Nathan just didn't sound rockin enough to my ears. But then I found out my grandma's maiden name was Rocker, so that was cool enough, but man, how do I ollie on this skateboard?! It's impossible!

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

I've never had an earring.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

My mom used to wear those clip-on earrings, because she has never pierced her ears (she's 82 now). I am pretty sure that when I was a kid I tried one of them on to see what it felt like. I maybe even did that twice; who can remember that far back? It felt mildly peculiar, but not quite as uncomfortable as clipping a clothespin to one's nasal septum.

Aimless, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

I tried my daughters clip-ons on in Star***ks at the weekend and my daughter was all "daaaad, you're sooooooooooo embarassing...". They were more comfortable than my mums used to be, I can report.

I have never worn an earring. But I also wanted a mohawk when I was about 9. For me, at least, it was the Last of the Mohicans influence. Loved that movie.

Z S, Monday, 1 September 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

no, never.

I had an earring (and an eyebrow ring - ugh) at the SAME TIME I had a mohawk. I was 19, and boy did it piss off the locals and tourists in Williamsburg, VA.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 1 September 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

YES I WEAR ONE OCCASIONALLY but i feel i'd like to wear it much more. i keep losing them.

Surmounter, Monday, 1 September 2008 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

Used to wear one, haven't for more than a decade, was actually starting to think about doing it again.

Soukesian, Monday, 1 September 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

Yes from late 80s to mid-90s, but not since.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 1 September 2008 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

yes - i've had one in the lobe since '96, a cartilage piercing on top from '99 - '01, and a bar through my left-side eyebrow from '01 - '02, but that came out b/c it never exactly healed.

remy bean, Monday, 1 September 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

used to wear earrings (one in each ear!) in college, but now I am old. they were runes, I believe, the ones I wore most.

askance johnson, Monday, 1 September 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

i had an earring and a labret. wish i could go back in time and kick my own ass.

rockapads, Monday, 1 September 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

I used to be pierced in both ears, and I'm invoking the past tense b/c it's pretty much all scar tissue at this point. But, but, and I almost started a thread on the I Love Style board regarding this, I totally wanna go back to those George Michael hoop days. The public would love me.

dell, Monday, 1 September 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

i had a few holes in one ear and one in the other. they are still there, kind of. I had all kinds of earrings, like spiders and crosses! wasn't I fucking cool? no.

akm, Monday, 1 September 2008 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

I pierced my own ear, wore an earring occasionally, but did it all wrong because now I have a keloid scar/bump on the back of my earlobe.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 September 2008 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

Ai Lien, Monday, 1 September 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

harrison ford's earrings really offend me for some reason

sunny successor, Monday, 1 September 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

me too.

latebloomer, Monday, 1 September 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

I had the piece of cartilage above your lobe pierced for about two weeks... before I found another job and had to get rid of it.

milo z, Monday, 1 September 2008 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

i had an earring :) but i took it out :(

DG, Monday, 1 September 2008 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

By the time I was old enough to go get an ear pierced on my own it didn't require a whole lot of deliberation to decide that I wasn't going to get one. It seemed to me that for every one male in the world of men with earrings who happened to look sorta cool, there seemed to be at least one sleaze bucket, one effeminate sleaze bucket, one teenager who it was clear earrings were not for him and looked to be trying too hard, one future fraternity date rapist, one wtf farm boy, etc. I was pretty sure I'd fall into the awkward-teen-tries-too-hard category and just didn't want to gamble that I'd fall into looking the part of any others. (A teenager who is painfully self aware and has low self esteem, quite a shock, I know.) Plus, just didn't really want one by that point...

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

In hindsight, good move.

Some here seemed to have an earring for a 5-10 year period of their lives and then stopped; I wonder what all the people who got massive plugs when they were in college are going to do later in life when they no longer want that droopy strip of jerky dangling from their ears. How well do those heal up?

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

Had one for 10 years but took it out recently because it felt anachronistic. I've got other pierces, one of which appears to be infected.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

it was a college thing for me. got it pierced summer after freshman year i think. wore it straight through graduation, this woulda been '88-91. then i had to look for jobz, so i stopped, except for sometimes on weekends. eventually just stopped altogether.

at the time i did it it was not too shocking, but was still a little uncommon (at least at my very staid middle-american university). a handful of my male college friends had earrings, certainly not all of htem. i mostly wore little studs and stuff, but i also had a dangling peace-sign i kind of liked, and my girlfriend had these nice big, thin silver hoops that i would sometimes wear. (or wear one of, anyway. i just had the left ear done.)

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

I've worn a small diamond stud since I was about 14-15. I mostly forget it's there.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 02:51 (sixteen years ago)

2 small earrings in left ear; never take them out, been there since I was 20, mostly forgotten they're there

James Morrison, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 04:04 (sixteen years ago)

i suppose this is just me being old-guy out of step with fashion, but i find the big giant hole-punch piercings a little ugly.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 04:29 (sixteen years ago)

not as ugly as people who walk around with bluetooth headsets though. there are days where it feels like new york is going borg.

Xpost: "You'll regret it when you're older! What happens when you want a job at a bank?"

What, are you their grandparents or something? I credit any adult who has had an irreversible body modification with having thought about what living with it is going to be like. And society will have moved on "later in life" . It isn't going to be 2008 forever. There are going to be a lot of older people with these major piercings. I really don't think it's going to be so much of an issue.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 07:16 (sixteen years ago)

I managed six people with an earring ffs.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 07:25 (sixteen years ago)

k, I did the work, the earring did NOTHING.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 07:26 (sixteen years ago)

I really don't think it's going to be so much of an issue.

i think that's true in some areas, less so in others. the kind of earrings i wore 20 years ago in college, i don't think i'd be comfortable wearing in my office even now. i don't think i'd get fired, but i don't think it'd do a whole lot for my prospects either.
