The $35 movie ticket

And this is scheduled to open in the town where I live, for fun:

Village Roadshow is vowing to take luxury to a new level with its theaters at locations including One Colorado in Old Pasadena, Triangle Square in Costa Mesa and at the Guasti Winery development in Ontario, each of which aims to open by December 2009.

The Gold Class experience starts with online seating selection, valet parking and a concierge desk at check-in.

Auditoriums will be the regular size but hold 30 to 40 table-side seats each, as opposed to 150 to 200 seats with drink holders at a typical multiplex, said Rob Goldberg, chief operating officer of Village Roadshow's Burbank-based Gold Class Cinemas division.

With the extra room, black-uniformed, "stealth-like" servers will be able to whisk menu choices such as lobster spring rolls, duck tacos, Wagyu beef burgers and creme brulee to customers' tables without obscuring the movie, he said, all at the call of a button. The theaters will offer seasonal menus with more than 100 wine selections, plus signature cocktails.

"First came the movie theater, then the modern multiplex," Goldberg said. "This is the third phase."

Patrons will pay to be pampered even in tough economic times, he believes: "It's like an identity refresher. While the price point looks big, you get a lot for your extra 15 bucks."

Food and drinks are not included. A mushroom-and-brie pizza and a bottle of New Belgium Fat Tire beer would add $28 to the tab.

It should be noted that Triangle Square is a half-vacant mall that had most of its marquee stores close some time ago (the exception being the uselessness that is the Yard House chain), and is near a stretch of Newport Blvd. noted mostly for its trashy pub crawl opportunities.

fortunately, these elitists will still see the same shit.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

$15 extra for a total of $35? Surely, even in California, going to a movie doesn't cost $20?

ian, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

People must have never heard of the drive-in. $5 for two movies, and you can bring in whatever food or drinks you'd like.

Also, you can fuck!

naus, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

It's grim up north. xpost

s1ocki, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

I am dying at "stealth-like". It makes it seem like they're almost, but not quite, quiet.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

Rub-n-tug for another $25.

Eazy, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

Our nearest drive-in is $16 per carload for 2 movies, and if you bring your own food you have to pay for a $5 "food license" to make up what they lose in concession sales.

stealth-like car checks

Pancakes Hackman, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

I never felt like I needed a god damn Wagyu beef burger to sit through a 2 hour movie. Eat a popcorn and shut up.

carne asada, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

Conversely, I remember thinking to myself "Really, the only thing that would make 'Wanted' a perfect movie-going experience would be a Wagyu beef burger."

HI DERE, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

i love how the first google image search result for "stealth-like" is a cute kitten!

Same here. I just saw Pineapple Express there.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

I've gone to the Sundance cinema in SF a few times; tickets there cost $13.50. They put a surcharge in because the place is run 'green'; it's also very nice and comfortable, they show no ads, you can reserve your seats, and you can take your booze from the bar into the theater with you if you drink. Considering that I only make it out to the movies about four or five times a year now, I don't mind paying extra and being pretty sure I'll have a nice experience (the clean theater is the main draw for me, plus, the seat reservations). But that's about as much as I'm willing to pay.

akm, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

I actually think many films would be improved by Wagyu beef burgers. Just think what Eisenstein could have done if Wagyu had been invented at that time.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

we are truly a sick, decadent, terrible civilization.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

Wait wait - Gold Class? We've had Gold Class cinemas (recliner seats, tables, booze, food etc) for like 5 years. Is this new in the US? I dont get it.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

I actually don't even think it's that crazy to have a movie theater where you can sit at tables and order higher-end food (not that I would go to one, but I'm sure some people would) I just don't understand the idea of paying an extra $20 or so just for the privilege of sitting in the theater wherein you then pay excessively jacked up prices for the food items as well.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

Our gold class. Dunno if its the same thing...

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

The real joke is that haha how can you possibly know the difference between Wagyu and Kobe beef in the dark...mwahahaha the PROFITS!!!

nickalicious, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

Hopefully they hire terrible, lazy chefs.

^^ it is crazy!! a place around here tried it. they converted the seats in a beautiful old theater into a tiered set of tables. it wasn't crazy high end and it wasn't first-run pictures, but the food was aight and the movies were ok too. the trouble is, the noise and action of ordering and eating in a restaurant are just totally at odds with the experience of sitting and watching a movie. the idea tanked.

eating and hanging out with friends with a movie on: awesome. dealing with other people you don't know doing the same during a movie you paid to see: sucks.

goole, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

eating and hanging out with friends with a movie on: awesome.

i find this pretty impossible to do successfully with more than one friend at a time

get bent, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

maybe it's just my ADD, but for me it's very difficult to concentrate on a movie when other people are rattling around

get bent, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

well it kinda has to be a movie everybody has seen

goole, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

this sounds totally fun, you cranks.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:24 (sixteen years ago)

Hey, so long as you're paying!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno if anyone looked at the link I posted but our Gold Class isnt like, tables in a cinema, comedy-club style. Its a small set of la z boy style recliners, with a small table between 2 and there's maybe 20 all up in the room? And the waiters are pretty quiet moving among it all I would imagine but yeah its not going to be reverent silence. People here tend to favour it for things like hiring a whole cinema out with a large group, to watch a first run of Star Wars or Harry Potter or whatever, fan club types.

Trayce, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

a lot of stadium seating is comfortable enough that i dont see the point to this

also my friends & i sneak booze in all the fucking time

also who wants to eat something other than popcorn or candy while immersed in a theatrical experience? fuck all these people

deeznuts, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

i do, deeznuts. and you know what you can do if you don't like it? well, you can go fuck yourself. you can go fuck yourself so hard that you get a great big sexually transmitted disease all over your genitals. that's one thing you can do. now sit down.

iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

If there was an emoticon for ridiculously big "omg" grin I would be typing it rite now.

trayce this is pretty cool but watching movies in theaters is typically about leaving your living room not recreating it

deeznuts, Wednesday, 3 September 2008 01:02 (sixteen years ago)

True, actually I'd rather watch a movie at home, I hate it when I need to use the loo in the middle of a damn film.
