RFI: Getting Tee Shirts Printed/Silkscreened/Whatever

My wife and I have an idea for a tee that we want to sell at an artist studio tour she's participating in, with the possibility of selling it more widely if we get a good response. Surprisingly for a dude who plays in bands, I know nothing about this stuff. Silkscreening v. Screenprinting? Can anyone recommend an NYC printer? Are Gildan shirts better than Hanes?

It's supposed to be sort of an artisty tee shirt and we want to sell it to an artisty crowd, so I'm willing to spend more on a higher quality tee and print (and also charge more per shirt), although I don't know if I like the look of the American Apparel shirts.

I'm an avid t-shirt fan and I SWEAR by American Aparel shirts. Especially if you're selling to an artisty crowd. The fit is impeccable and they're as soft as can be.
