I am so hungry

And my bank will not give me any money despite my having lots in my account and it won't tell me what my balance is either so I can't check whether I have been defrauded and it's bank holiday still and they won't answer the phone till tomorrow unless I upgrade to some 'premier' account with extended telephone hours and it's annoying cause I am registered for the separate telephone banking service as part of my internet banking package but I have never used it and don't know where I kept the id number I need to access it and when I rang them on Thursday they said there was no problem and I should try another cashpoint and I have tried about ten and it was OK when the shops were open cause I could get cashback at Sainsbury's and maybe that's open again now I will try, but it's probably closed again now what with it being a bank holiday Monday.

It's weird being penniless. I'm even 3p short of the bus fare home.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I have run out of contact lenses. I sill have some cigarettes though.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But I am reluctant to eat them. There is no one around I know well enough to borrow money from.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel like someone in a lame documentary who is volunteering to see how the other half lives for a weekend.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is one of those weird "please feel sorry for Nick" threads again, isn't it.

Nicole, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I was just hoping for some food.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey i would lind you a few pounds but you see yr in england

anthony, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I buy ILXers lunch (ask Brian), but since you're like a million miles away it's a bit impractical.

I'll just have to laugh instead.

Nicole, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Next thing we know, you're going to be putting on mascara in the supermarket that you've nicked off the shelf! After this, are you never going to try and run away from home again? See how it feels? Oh.. and for food. Wait until the bagel shops close and go dumpster diving. They always throw away about one hundred bagels.

Mandee, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll just have to laugh instead.

You forgot the important 'points' part, though. As in: *points, laughs*

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But bagels in London are disgusting even when they haven't been in the bin. It's OK - I have some eggs at home but it makes you think.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does that mean there are no Parmesan Peppercorn bagels in London? :(

Mandee, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, just revolting untoasted greasy margarine fests. The one on Brick Lane is OK but never shuts so no closing time dumpster diving there. Avoid 'The 'Happening Beigel Bakery' of Finsbury Park. There is indeed something 'happening' there, but I don't want to know about it.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sell your body to the night. You could probably make enough to buy a candy bar or some other cheap nourishment.

Nicole, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The tips of my fingers have now gone numb.

N., Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot about your bovine venereal disease, so nevermind.

Nicole, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you have any petty cash in office drawers?

jel --, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eat your rich and greasy pride, you arrogant fool!

Ptee, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but do you look good?

Queen G, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and do you have spare tampons?

di, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I went home scouring the pavements for dropped change. My bank say they will give me £20 compensation for my loss of dignity.

When you get hunger pains does it mean that your belly is shrinking?

is Carnie short for Carnivore?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 June 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone fed N. yet?

robster (robster), Friday, 4 June 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Carnie has been locked in a room and denied of food by her sister Wendy so that she can shed a few pounds. She is absolutely starving and so bangs on the door "Wendy, for Chrissakes! GIVE SOME FOOD NOW!" to which of course Wendy replies "hold on for one more day!"

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 June 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"gut feelings"?!?!?!?!

No more hungry Americans!

The US government has tweaked its terminology in referring to the nearly 11 million Americans who face a constant struggle with hunger to refer to them as people with "very low food security."

According to a report released this month by the US Department of Agriculture, roughly 35 million Americans had difficulty feeding themselves in 2005 and of those some 10.8 million went hungry.

But unlike last year's report on hunger in America, which labeled families who don't get enough to eat as having "food insecurity with hunger," this year's report referred to them as having "very low food security."

The change in terminology has angered groups that fight hunger who say it is aimed at hiding a stark reality.

wtf

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

I am totally on the Raspberry Red or Clockwork Orange level of national food security scale. This evidenced by how I've been eating linguini seasoned with salt since last Wednesday. It's a cruel, cruel summer.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say this is way better euphemism THAN "food insecurity with hunger," which just sounds like anorexia.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

i am guessing n. eventually got to eat since he's still alive

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

I have no empirical data to confirm this. Is there any way someone could send me 1/4 ounce of his blood?

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

man i wish i had a plate of warm food

Maria :D, Sunday, 28 October 2007 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i'll go get me one

Maria :D, Sunday, 28 October 2007 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

It rly fucking sucks having no money for food. I spent three years on and off having no money for food. When I worked at Kinko's my coworkers figures this out and would leave sandwiches, fruit, and snacks in my locker, which was kind of them. It got to the point where I felt my ribs one day and started crying. It's hard asking people for food, truly humiliating.

Abbott, Monday, 29 October 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

This has not been the case for four months FWIW.

Abbott, Monday, 29 October 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

and what, Monday, 29 October 2007 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

now i feel silly for feeling sorry for myself tonight. i'm just working way overtime and am cold miles away from any sources of nourishment. last time i didn't have money for food was 1990 for about three weeks after i had just moved to oregon and not yet started a job. it was blackberry season though so that helped a lot.

how did your situation change in the past four months, abbott?

Maria :D, Monday, 29 October 2007 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

It got to the point where I felt my ribs one day and started crying.

I've never NOT been able to feel my ribs!

Z S, Monday, 29 October 2007 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I never have not felt them, no, I cannot deny!

Z S, Monday, 29 October 2007 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

ILX is poor as hell lately.

roxymuzak, Monday, 29 October 2007 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, I got student loans: now that I'm 24 I don't have my parents' income screwing up my grant money. They came in 4 months ago. Srsly the whole year before that it was on and off eating, even just running out of boiled white rice. Me and the man crying each other to sleep a lot.

Abbott, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

Always made sure the pets had food though. Man what the fuck is going to happen to me when I have kids?

Abbott, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

Someone gave us a bunch of stovetop stuffing when they found out we were starving...it had expired 12 fucking years ago. Okay. Didn't eat it.

Abbott, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

12 years, really?!

roxymuzak, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:16 (seventeen years ago)

Ramen noodles are generally $0.05-$0.20 per pack, 2-3 of which can keep you going one whole day. Taco Bell bean burritos are a bit more expensive, but warm, salty, and filling, and don't require that you've paid the gas or electric bills.

libcrypt, Monday, 29 October 2007 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

In the hope of moving out this house was emptied of food, and the fridge smells.
It feels like I can only cook three meals and I want none of them! However it is very early in the morning and such elaborate cooking would be a mistake.

o-ess, Saturday, 10 November 2007 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

why not apply for food stamps if you are too broke to buy food? is it a shame thing? i'm not sure if it's different elsewhere in the states but in ny you can use an EBT card just like a credit/debit card, you swipe it in the same machine and everything. it is actually pretty sweet, my friend used to get about $300 a month. free groceries!
