be there or DIE

geeta, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is a great place to meet. Sadly I shall be elsewhere, dead.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right attitude. wrong timing.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is in the upstairs bit right (cos only members or filmgoers can get downstairs). Okay, sure, why not. Though a bit too close for comfort film wise - if conversation is poor I'll have to see a filum.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Define 'mentalist'?

dan, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I had clicked before picking up the phone, I would be going. However, I've just promised to meet my friend in West London. Sorry Geeta

(I have never felt so shallow as in that conversation. Friend informs me that another friend is going to protest in Notting Hill. My response? 'Oh, I've never heard of Protest. Is it new?' 'Anna, protest as a verb. It's not a bar.' I've turned into an Ab Fab character)

Anna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is a good story but from the way you're telling it it sounds like she pronounced the verb as the noun, strssing the first syllable, which puts some of the blame on your friend. Also it's a bit of an odd thing to say. I mean it makes it sounds like some kind of abstract recreational activity if people don't say what they're protesting about.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reseve my right to both agree and disagree with Nick here. The vowel stressing thing is impossible to define from Anna's story. Nevertheless I started to agree when the source of the protest was not mentioned.

Then I noticed she was protesting in Notting Hill - and frankly everything about West London needs protesting about so fair dues.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah upstairs is where i meant cuz i had forgot you can't go downstairs unless you're seeing a movie. sorry: sod

still if you get there super-early ptee you can save a couple of tables by being minatory and scary to approach

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i *may* make this. on the other hand going home and sleeping = pretty tempting right now. i hate tricky decisions.

toby, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Minatory = like a Minatour.

Horns required quickest urgency.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh oh ALRIGHT THEN! This means my plan to NOT go shopping and go home and tidy ect has now failed and instead I will go to FAITH and then to CHINATOWN and then come and meet you lot. Mark: does it serve BOUZE?

Sarah, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

erm i don't know

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Minor Tory = William Hague as a YOOF heh hehehe.

Sarah, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be there maybe hmmm.

Graham, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From random website:

Curzon Cinema, 93-107 Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho, W1V 7AE (near Cambridge Circus). Cafe upstairs (up to about 4 people) and bar downstairs with comfy sofas (up to about 8 people). for people with a cinema ticket.

Will we all fit?? I dunno, I've nevah been there...

Sarah, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree and disagree with you Pete. As I typed it I thought 'well there's no evidence for this' but I still bet I'm right. Partly cause I can imagine Anna thinking there was a bar called 'PROtest' but not one called 'proTEST' and partly cause lots of people say 'PROtest' for the verb when they are talking about marches and stuff for some reason.

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if we can't fit we can always leave a message with bar people to say where we went: it will be a kind of easter quest

or a trail of chocolate bunnies (if we had chocolate bunnies)

you will know them by the trail of chocolate bunnies (if they have chocolate bunnies)

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be easier if you just had a contingency plan (ie. The Blue Posts over the road ha ha).

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(see GEETA CHECK YOUR EMAIL for golden-lion update)

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I protest.

I am also protesting. Whilst I agree that the traditional examination does little to show someones intelligence beyond them being able to be good at examinations, I do not see this as a valid argument to remove any kind of quasi-objective testing regime - no matter how flawed. Would you let someone drive without a driving test.

WHat is the protest by the way? Is the Israeli Embassy in West London?

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You won't fit or at least you won't get a seat - that bar is minute. And you can pronounce that any way you like. But I've never been upstairs. I suggest you stand at the door of the curzon and look down the road directly across from you until your eyes alight on The Dive Bar. Ideal for shitty underground drinking in unpleasant surroundings. A favourite of mine cos of the BOOTHS.

Sam, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bugger bugger bugger am far too knackered to come out but the lure of ale + interweb mentalists is strong.

RickyT, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dive bar can be fun. Also near shortest pub crawl in world location. Don't worry - I'll sorts you out. I'll bring multicoloured post-its.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, I'd love to come out but not tonight. I'll pop down next week though.

Tom, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think so. I am unsure as my friend Kate goes on so many. Although I have some strongly held beliefs Kate is *so* politically active it has ceased to have meaning to her friends and just become something Kate does, as in 'Oh Vicky went to Paris for work and Kate went on another protest march.'

I'm not helping myself here.

Anna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn and BLAST have just read the backstory to this and discovered this is my only chance to meet Geeta (this time)! Sorry Geeta. I will rely on Pete's reports of you which means my expectations next time round might be somewhat...off-base. Have a great evening!

Tom, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the way that random website implies that only four people can still upstairs and eight downstairs. I mean it's not that small. To save any confusion, upstairs = ground floor. As Mark says, downstairs is only for if you've got a ticket. I can't even think if they sell booze upstairs. Possibly not. It's a great place for sitting on a stool and watching the world go by. Not perhaps so great for more than about four of you, which is perhaps what the random website meant. But who's going anyway?

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna, would you clear up the PROtest / proTEST thing for me, please?

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it means four will fit a table: 20 to 30 could fit the upstairs space, poss.more if we got sponsorhip (tho at 5.08 that's perhaps asking a bit much)

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was proTEST. I was not really listening/ being a bit dim.

Anna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[bugger]

N., Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lizards pronounce it thus: pray-test (sp. prei-test)

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its just that I was toying with accompanying my shop manager to the Israeli embassy one. But he has decided not to go (trying to keep low profile). I have decided to go on last minute shambles ILE meet up.

Pete, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But it was very nice of you to try and provide me with a get out clause.

Geeta has left the mail alerts on. We should talk bolllocks on another thread.

Anna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Right, I'm leaving the house now (17:35) and will try to be at the Curzon thingy as near to half six as possible.

DG, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ditto except it's not my house (or DG's): see ya!!

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also just leaving and will be there around 7:30

Graham, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only just read this at 18:04...so, sorry for my (regular) non- appearence! Hope y'all had a good time!

Also, talking of mentalists...Channel 4 Teletext, used the word MENTALIST in their review of the Moldy Peaches on pg.453 today! I feel like we are being watched!

jel --, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh dear...I'm sorry I didn't turn up in the end but transport my way has been an utter nightmare, I'm very sorry for any trouble I've caused.

DG, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

found out too late about this, d'oh!

taxdodger Chris, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's okay DG, because in the end it doesn't even matter.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see the Dan Perry/Linkin Park experience live. I have a feeling it ends with Chester running in fear.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Having seen this posting at 10.10pm, I think it's a bit late to set off. More notice next time?

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no trouble, dg. i humiliated myself over basic mental arithmetic and the q as to whether or not bran flakes (and cereal in general) are sweet. and i still haven't learnt mark s's "stop drinking after two bottles of beer" trick...

toby, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

deeeege!!! :…(

sorry martin it was v.last min cuz geeta is flying home tomorrow

the curzon acquitted itself quite well considering (and probably you CAN drink downstairs if you are sneaky but we didn't bother) >> BUT which is more unacceptable, eating weetabix with water, or eating weetabix just as a dry biscuit?

mark s, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eating weetabix w/ water obv. note i did not say that i had done this myself, just that friends had!

(a check of the ingredients confirms that bran flakes contain both sugar and honey btw)

i suspect that drinking downstairs required no sneakiness. on the other hand there was no need to do so.

toby, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ps otoh i have met ppl who eat cereal w/fruit juice OUT OF CHOICE. i have never tried this but surely it = madness, no?

toby, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Honey Smacks + orange juice = YUM.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone at the ILE meetup was uber-kewl! i'm back in boston, sadly. i want to go back.

geeta, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ps: i am forever haunted by that frightening story you guys told me about eating weetabix covered with marmit

geeta, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

er, marmite.

sorry i kant spell today

geeta, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

toby: much worse than cereal with fruit juice is cap'n crunch with blue curacao. in college i dared someone to do this and he did (and regretted it later, of course). then again, i also convinced a friend of mine to snort a line of tabasco sauce for a dollar. and he did. take that, ozzy!

<

geeta, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta answer our japanese monster wrestling thread!!

mark s, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one dollar = nowhere near enough to make anyone sane snort tabasco sauce

(there is prob a "what is the stupidest thing you have put up your nose?" thread in here somewhere. in my case it is vodka ow ow ow)
