ZM radio, on headphones, almost 5 hours a day.

rainy, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of Adult. Also the Microphones and Shelleyan Orphan. I'm also spending time with some impulse purchases from last week, including Van Halen's self-titled album, Emperor's Equilibrium IX, and -- based largely on your enthusiasm, Tom! -- Super Trouper.

I'm fairly enthusiastic about Adult. Mostly I want people to hear the record just so I can talk about, because while I'm not completely certain how much I like it (either a decent amount or a whole lot), I do know that it continually interests me.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill E, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of Curve. The "Blade II" soundtrack. Martin Mass for double choir. Oh and a bunch of Kenna mp3s which really make me wish his damn album would come out THIS CENTURY...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My new Young Fresh Fellows vs. Minus 5 album, tons of random MP3s, Shins, Neil Finn and friends live at the St. James (listened to most of it anyway) and on obsessive (rediscovery) repeat is Arias and Symphonies by the Spoons.

'Ride Into The Blue' - Bergman/Borgmann/Brotzmann

I'm also on a bit of an acid house tip at the moment - 'Land of Confusion' (Confusion Mix) by Armando, wot a record! - and have REALLY been digging an old Lee Dorsey comp that my flatmate dug out the other day.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OH, I meant to mention Brazen Hussies! They are CLASSICK!!!!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tied & Tickled Trio, Verbow, Loud Family, Talk Talk, Talk Talk, Talk Talk, and, um, Talk Talk.

Daver, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of random stuff. To start off with, Korean hip hop (Moon Hee Jun, JTL, all that awful interesting stuff). Next, some more regular stuff - Kelis, Aaliyah, N.E.R.D., Third Eye Blind's self titled album from who knows how long ago, etc...

jen, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of Prince, Elvis Presley.

Sean, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yesterday and this morning: neil young "after the gold rush", sleater- kinney "dig me out" and "the hot rock", plus the fall "palace of swords reversed" and some 45s: "SOS" abba, "here comes the night" them, "friday on my mind" the easybeats, "crazy for you" madonna, a snapper live 7" with "hammerhead" and "dry spot" on it. i noticed i need a new stylus very desterately. when i put "take on me" (the original) on, it skipped and put me in a foul mood.

di, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ACTION!

"Overprotected" by Britney Spears is my favouritist single so far this year.

"Put Your Foot On The Fuzzbox Baby" Helen Love.

"It's All True" (LP) Bellatrix.

I've discovered Audiogalaxy as well.

Graham, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cannibal Ox (yet to munch in one sitting);
cLOUDEAD (reverse onomatopoeia?);
Lift To Experienc (MBV at war with Slint, with Faulkner rabbling rhapsodic, lookin' at the wall, lookin' at the wall, y'alls a sinner y'hear? y'hear?);
and am about to gorge on a 6 Vinyl Hank Williams box set.

powertonevolume, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, Dan, that Kenna record's not out yet? Why do I get the feeling they just haven't quite decided how to market it yet?

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam & Dave, The Four Tops, Nat King Cole trio, The Platters, that Funky 16 Corners compilation (I know, I know), Junior Walker, The Ronettes "Be My Baby", The Flamingos "I Only Have Eyes For You", etc.

Dan I, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

petite verte, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in order of frequency:
1) nothing, it's too much trouble to turn on the cd player instead of just going to sleep
2) mozart's requiem, we're singing it in choir and i'm obsessed because it's so great
3) kinks, village green preservation society, and the nutracker, because they are happy and fun

Maria, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very little new stuff. Actually no new stuff. Mostly The Cure. And Ice Cube, Steely Dan, Sly and the family Stone, Coltrane and "Best of Acid House Vol. 1".

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah, another response buried again. WHY DOES WORK ACTUALLY HAVE TO BE WORK SOMETIMES?

In order to make work go by more quickly, this has meant endless amounts of Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs, Meat Puppets albums and MST3K songs. I may not be embracing 2002 right now, but that's because the warm comfort of familiarity is conducive for library stuff concentration...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Song of the year so far: "El Sinaloense," the ULTRA-ROCK except not opener to the new Kronos Quartet album. Also: Dave Bartholomew & Fats Domino (for an article), Pelt, Saturday Looks Good To Me, the _No More... No Mourir_ compilation, and trying to figure out if I like the new Flin Flon EP and if so how much. Just tonight I bought Stockholm Monsters and Ludus reissues; have not yet listened.

Other song of the year so far: Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)," which I turn up every time it comes on the car radio.

Douglas, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this morning, lots of vitalic, which is making me a bit paranoid and on-edge, white knuckles on the mouse. i think i'll switch to tarkan.

minna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of The Gongs, new band on my label who I totally love (this is not hype).

Holger Hiller, who I now WANT TO BE.

John Cage 'Indeterminacy', a 2 CD collection of his excellent little observations, which he reads with David Tudor in the other room demolishing a piano and playing random snatches of 'The Fontana Mix'. Wonderful, listened to it first thing this morning. It should be scary, but Cage's voice is just so sissy and funny, you can't help loving it.

Now I'm wondering whether to spend $70 on a box set of 8 CDs of Cage's journal, read by him over several years. Will it be as stimulating as 'Indeterminacy'?

Momus, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Couple of verve reissues which i bought for my dads birthday but are so good i may just have to keep - dizzy gillespie (have trumpet will excite), bill evans (further conversations with myself). The new psb's release release and various fabulations like unit four plus two, 1910 fruitgum co, the foundations and several repeats of schneider's the light 3000

geoff, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't explain this....Nik Kershaw, Tears for Fears, OMD. You get the picture. Why I'm stuck in a John Hughes soundtrack, I have no idea.

Nicole, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CD-R of personal favorites, features (among other things):

Lucky One - Alison Krauss & Union Station, You Keep Me Hanging On - J.J. Steve Coleman - Dropkick, Prince - Chicago march 2002, The Streets and Adult.

chaki, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at work: boards of canada, aim, clinic, ladytron, steve earle for some unknown reason, cannibal ox, a compilation called "rapper's delight" with all old-skool tone loc, de la soul etc on it, and herb alpert, gram parsons and the rutles at home (boyfwiend's choices, he just went record shopping again the fiend).

katie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right now - wire. who i still don't really like.

in a minute - the new mum album, which i suspect i'm going to like a lot.

best thing i've heard recently - alice coltrane's journey to satchidananda.

toby, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Much New Order (constant thing), the Fischerspooner album, Golden Boy feat. Miss Kittin 'Rippin Kittin' and that new David Holmes compilation.

Anna, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wurk: Five Greatest Hits, random mp3s if computer allows me to download: most recently - the Sugababes/Gary Numan boot YAAAY and another extended boot of Iggy Pop/Beasties which then goes into The Strokes/The Smiths but not very well chiz chiz.

Home: THE STREETS - ORIGINAL PIRATE MATERIAL! Actually, I haven't listened to anything else since I came home on Monday. It'll probably revert back to WUTHERING HEIGHTS soon. I bought a random northern soul 7" called PANIC but can't remember who it's by, and also another Jonathan Richman CD for sooper cheap.

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Geogaddi', Gas, Sharpside 'Belgian Resistance', Boredoms, Kylie v New Order, Thomas Koner.

stevo, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

City Rockers presents Futurism, and the fifth track on the first CD, Missy Queens Gonna Die by Tok Tok vs Soffy O is fucking great. I love it. I like the whole CD actually. Royksopps remix of "What Does it Feel Like" by Felix is great, I thought that was one of the worst tracks on the album.

I'm also listening to a mix cd I got from a friend which has most of the dance stuff I've been banging on about on ILM, plus Age of Love- Age of Love thrown in for good measure.

Other than that I'm still playing Middle of Nowhere a bit, and Johnny Cash-Solitary Man is getting a bit of a rerun too.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lamb, boards of canada, broadcast (yes, my very own chilled compilation, ick), a disappointing speed-garage "junglist massive" style compilation, 2manydjs (ace!), Radioactivity (mmm), Orbital various, Alan FM (minidisc singles compilation, sadly), Streets.

New project: I dug out of storage all my old cassettes so that I can minidisc them all and throw them away. So a weird mix, including the NME "Indie City" double tape, KLF cassette singles (cassingles!) Fields of the Nephilim (hee!), The Swans (!). Oh there's always been a goth element to my dance music.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boards of Canada, Four Tet, New Order, Silver Jews, the Down From The Mountain album and for some inexpicable reason Enrique. Hero is class.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The records I've been playing most - the Streets (of course), Andrew WK (excellent album), 2 Many DJs, "The Kings And Queens Of Bollywood" compilation, 3 of the Soul Jazz Dynamite! Jamaican series I got in a sale (400% being particularly tasty), Greensleeves Sampler 22 esp. the Capleton track. I've wrestled plenty with the Futurism compilation but I'm coming to think it's ass, the "Missy Queen" and Alpenstars tracks sort of aside.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't even have that. mind you i don't care much for that record.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sleater-Kinney - One Beat, Bikini Kill - I Like Fucking b/w I Hate Danger 7", Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear - Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah / Our Troubled Youth, Cadallaca - Introducing Cadallaca, Excuse 17 - Such Friends Are Dangerous, Heavens to Betsy - Calculated, Huggy Bear - Weaponry Listens to Love, Quasi - The Sword of God, Julie Ruin - Julie Ruin, Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One, Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out, Sleater-Kinney - Get Up 7", The Spells - The Age of Backward EP.

Listened to almost no records this year -- but am going to the odd concert. Last Tuesday went to a recital of solo works by new music classical composers near Kings Cross. Its a minor miracle whenever this stuff gets put on -- really tough sounding stuff from the likes of Richard Barrett, Aaron Cassidy, Roger Redgate and James Dillon, which has all that important collective energy that makes up for the isolated scene these people work in, as well as the mixed results that often go with the works themselves where there is still much "to play for".

For me, its quite nice listening to things in your face when you're not also living with the stuff on record. That won't carry on (lots to investigate and listen to) but, for now, it'll do.

I am listening to a CD-R of the Belle and Sebastian Black Sessions. The tragic thing is I can't remember who sent it to me. It is great and I am very thankful.

I love the slightly preemptory tone of the moderator in the beginning, which I think is typically French: may be interpreted as rude without meaning to be, in contrast to the ever so not outright forthcoming Scottish. All my own stereotypes -- sorry.
