What Have You Been Listening To Lately?

I'm fairly enthusiastic about Adult. Mostly I want people to hear the record just so I can talk about, because while I'm not completely certain how much I like it (either a decent amount or a whole lot), I do know that it continually interests me.

In order to make work go by more quickly, this has meant endless amounts of Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs, Meat Puppets albums and MST3K songs. I may not be embracing 2002 right now, but that's because the warm comfort of familiarity is conducive for library stuff concentration...

Other song of the year so far: Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)," which I turn up every time it comes on the car radio.

John Cage 'Indeterminacy', a 2 CD collection of his excellent little observations, which he reads with David Tudor in the other room demolishing a piano and playing random snatches of 'The Fontana Mix'. Wonderful, listened to it first thing this morning. It should be scary, but Cage's voice is just so sissy and funny, you can't help loving it.

Now I'm wondering whether to spend $70 on a box set of 8 CDs of Cage's journal, read by him over several years. Will it be as stimulating as 'Indeterminacy'?

Home: THE STREETS - ORIGINAL PIRATE MATERIAL! Actually, I haven't listened to anything else since I came home on Monday. It'll probably revert back to WUTHERING HEIGHTS soon. I bought a random northern soul 7" called PANIC but can't remember who it's by, and also another Jonathan Richman CD for sooper cheap.

I'm also listening to a mix cd I got from a friend which has most of the dance stuff I've been banging on about on ILM, plus Age of Love- Age of Love thrown in for good measure.

Other than that I'm still playing Middle of Nowhere a bit, and Johnny Cash-Solitary Man is getting a bit of a rerun too.

New project: I dug out of storage all my old cassettes so that I can minidisc them all and throw them away. So a weird mix, including the NME "Indie City" double tape, KLF cassette singles (cassingles!) Fields of the Nephilim (hee!), The Swans (!). Oh there's always been a goth element to my dance music.

I had the cassette til it got stolen by a friend of a friend who borrowed it and I've never been able to track it down again; I long for those sounds so!

Listened to almost no records this year -- but am going to the odd concert. Last Tuesday went to a recital of solo works by new music classical composers near Kings Cross. Its a minor miracle whenever this stuff gets put on -- really tough sounding stuff from the likes of Richard Barrett, Aaron Cassidy, Roger Redgate and James Dillon, which has all that important collective energy that makes up for the isolated scene these people work in, as well as the mixed results that often go with the works themselves where there is still much "to play for".

For me, its quite nice listening to things in your face when you're not also living with the stuff on record. That won't carry on (lots to investigate and listen to) but, for now, it'll do.

I am listening to a CD-R of the Belle and Sebastian Black Sessions. The tragic thing is I can't remember who sent it to me. It is great and I am very thankful.

I love the slightly preemptory tone of the moderator in the beginning, which I think is typically French: may be interpreted as rude without meaning to be, in contrast to the ever so not outright forthcoming Scottish. All my own stereotypes -- sorry.
