katie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i feel like a pimp for churchst books but here goes.

church st books, stoke newington church st, N16. tube stop...er, you're joking right?
notting hill book exchange, W11. tube stop: notting hill gate
skoob, WC1. tube stop: russell square (its kind of just outside near the cinema)

'Any Amount of Books' on the Charing Cross Road is prob. the best of that cluster of 2nd hand bkshops. Directly on the other side of the road is 'Murder One', which has large 2nd-hand crime and SF holdings. Also nearby is Cecil Court, where there are a number of specialist and antiquarian bksellers - children's bks, theatrical bks, esoteric/occult, modern first editions etc.

I've always found 'Skoobs' to be VERY expensive, and not always esp. well-stocked. In roughly the same neck of the woods, there's a pretty gd secondhand and remainder shop just round the corner from the British Museum (sorry, can't remember the exact name/location.)

Very often the best bargains are to be found in the Charity shops (I guess you'd call them thrift stores?) that are a fixture of most London High Streets.

The Oxfam bookshop on Strutton Ground is extremely good - also try the book market underneath Waterloo Bridge! It's not SUPER CHEAP but still quite good and you can go visit the SOUTH BANK ATTRACTIONS cheers cheers on the way.

yeh, skoob is a bit pricey, i dont bother with it really. the one you mean is judd, on marchmont st i think. its ok.

gareth, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

TBH I'm not sure I'd recommend Charing Cross Rd at all if you want to buy books - it's nice to browse about old books but they're so pricey and the quality of the stock varies so much I haven't been along there for ages. There's a comic shop along there that sells Powerpuff Gurlz comix though (I have nevah read any other comix in my life).

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

any charidee shop. oh and the SOAS bar of course.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Skoob is pricey but it has a good range of out of print second hand stuff rather than just remaindered current stuff. Last weekend I picked up some books on Hegel which I had been looking for for ages. Actually one did turn out to be remaindered since it was also in Waterstones Gower Street (roughly same prices 2/3 of cover).

alext, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is that hegel pr. "hi gal"?

mark s, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's pron. "hair gel".

***i feel like a pimp for churchst books but here goes.***

Gareth, isn't a knowledgeable pimp a contradiction in terms;>? Thanks for actual info we can use (esp. as I'm moving there myself in 3 weeks).

Nichole Graham, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any Amount of Books is now Large Amounts of Charity Shop Clothes (but sucks as a clothes shop).

the South Bank second hand stalls are good and haggling is possible.

I'd recommend also the MVE bookshop in Pembridge Road, W11.

Halcyon Books in Greenwich is excellent, and surrounded by remainder bookshops which aren't much cop but are very cheap. Cutty Sark tube.

owen hatherley, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

while halcyon books (and the other one in greenwich) have good stock, i have found them to be very pricey

gareth, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
take the train to Colchester! 60 minutes out of Liverpool St, three good bookshops (+ Oxfam...), sensible prices. (Greyfriars Books 92 East Hill is the best, but then i would say that: I run it!)

simon taylor, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard there was a good 2nd hand shop in stratford. anyone know anything about this?

gareth, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth, there is one on the feck it i can never remember the name i'll go to streetmap.co.uk in a tick and be more helpful. west ham lane or something... OK come out of the station, walk through the mall and out the other side, opposite there is a pub called "the swan". just WALK DOWN THAT ROAD bearing straight ahead and about 100 metres down there is a second hand bookshop which bizarrely enough also deals with lettings and stuff - there is loads of martial arts stuff and chinese dragons in the windows and there are clouds painted on the building! can't remember what it's called but you can't miss it... it's pretty good yeah. will go and find out the real name of the road for you now!

katie former E15 resident, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, west ham lane leading into new plaistow road. you'll have to skirt by the side of The Swan (little road called Tramway) but you can't miss it! the shop is called "books and buildings"!

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the best video rental shop EVAH is down that road. if you go into the back room there's a pond with FISH in it there!

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear no, that bookshop in Stratford closed down last Summer - it had a nice big Boxfull For A Fiver closing down sale, which I attended of course. There now appear to be no really good bookshops in East London.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Horrors, a pizza hut at 84 charing cross rd, what a wonderful story and true at that. my favorite book and movie. what are we doing to our world? I'm sorry i asked. thank you all for the other book store info. have a good day

elizabeth simpson, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)
