Hey, remember this? Fun!

New Order – “Bizarre Love Triangle” (12” Mix)
Wire – “Map Ref. 41n 93w” (Just listened to it tonite for the first time in 6 mos. and it’s as brilliant as I remember. “Chorus!” I may be more in love with these “3:36” than anything else in my life at the moment. Nancy wishes me to mention that this does not include her.)
Kraftwerk – “Computer Love”
Fela Kuti – “Kalakuta Show”
The Orb – “Little Fluffy Clouds”
Eric B and Rakim – “Follow The Leader”
Family Fodder – “Savoir Faire”
Gary Numan – “Cars”
Cheap Trick – “Surrender”
Pulp – “Common People”
Zed Bias – “Neighbourhood”
Wu Tang Clan – “Protect Ya Neck”
Ronettes – “Be My Baby”
Daft Punk – “Digital Love”
The Meters – “The Look of Love”

Kraftwerk – “Computer Love”fuck yes, their greatest moment and the most beautiful love song ever recorded outside of stax/motown.

The Orb – “Little Fluffy Clouds”/nothing new to say but i agree completely.

Eric B and Rakim – “Follow The Leader”good but overrated, i like relax with pep more ha ha.

Gary Numan – “Cars”sure, fun to sing also.

Pulp – “Common People”took some time to grow on me back in the day but dear god yes it's wonderful.

Wu Tang Clan – “Protect Ya Neck”of fucking course, turn the other cheek and i'll break your fucking chin!!

Daft Punk – “Digital Love” it makes me jump up and down.

The Meters – “The Look of Love”it's great but sort of insubstantial. i can think of fifty instrumental funk tracks i like more, and it's not even their best cover!

This very moment I think every fekking song on Basehead "Plays With Toys" is purrrrrfect.

nathalie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the meter's track is totally indefensible, i agree. (unless someone wants to come along and defend it.) but i think yr allowed one of those per list.

Family Fodder
I got their other record. It stinks. Sorry but they sure lost their Savoir Faire.

Cheap Trick - "Surrender" : Infectiously perfect singalong(but subversive!). What version, though? Originally heard it as an mp3 that turned out to be live in Detroit sometime in the 80s; & the album version sounds a bit flat (can't remember if I've heard Budokan) . . . still, first-exposure-imprinting & so on (a good argument for & against cover versions being evil).

Captain Beefheart- Harry Irene/ Pena?

Brian, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bizarre Love Triangle - great, but I am puzzled as to why this NO song has been the one that so many people have taken to their hearts (judging by the numerous cover versions anyway). In other words, why this and not say Thieves Like Us?

Pale Blue Eyes - Velvet Underground

In other words, why this and not say Thieves Like Us?

headphones! seriously, i never rated blt (mmmmm a blt would be good right now) half as highly until i listened to it laying down in the back seat of a car, somewhat drunk, on really good headphones. all those ping-pongy fairlight edits. mmmmmm. nummy.

Jess, will you marry me?

also:
Neil Young 'Harvest' [or maybe 'Down By The River']
The Zombies 'She's Not There'
Joy Division 'Transmission'

petra jane, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Jess was mental yesterday with all of the Ma$e nonsense, but now I'm absolutely convinced. "Bizarre Love Triangle" isn't a bad song, but there are so many other New Order songs which are better than it that it isn't funny. (It doesn't help that I have an irrational dislike of Shep Pettibone.)

No, Jess is right. "Bacon Lettuce Tomato" is the one, alright, though he's right to specify 12".

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bacon lett...oh GOD.

Actually, for what it's worth, I have compulsively been thinking of "Way of Life" for the past few days -- which is the song right *before* "Bizarre Love Triangle" on Brotherhood. What can it MEAN?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1 The Osmonds "One Bad Apple" , 2 The Ventures "Peter and the Wolf" , 3 Nick Drake " Chime of a city Clock", 4 Korla Pandit " Arabian Dance ", 5 Belle and Sebastian "Seeing Other People" , 6 Richard Thompspn " Don't Renege on Our Love " , 7 Momus "Tragedy and Farce" , 8 Pizzicato 5 "Strawberry Sleigh Ride" , 9 Martin Denny " Quiet Village" , 10 Joe Meek " Telstar"

mike hanle y, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd never have thought of the Osmonds as "perfect song" territory, but hey...;>

***State Of The Nation Shellshock True Faith***

Snapshot of high school days, this, but three of the greatest NO songs ever....never mind that it took me years to find out the names...

A few I couldn't get out of my head:

Map Ref, eh? I think the MBV cover of that might just make my fifteen, quite possibly along with, hmm, a different Wire track, maybe 12XU or Outdoor Miner...

Rebecca, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at present my 2 favourite songs are "on a night like this" and "so blind" by the renderers.

di, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

songs are great. they're one of the gifts of being alive. still, they played the "common people" vid on m2 last night and it didn't sound half as good through my tinny, monoaural tv speaker as through my tinny, cheap headphones.

jess, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i just realized that 'just another day' by oingo boingo is a perfect song.

chippy, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Newton, Iowa? Des Moines? ...Why?

(Better things to do? Almost certainly, thanks. But if you don't, or - hey! - even if you do, hunt down that MBV cover of Map Ref 41N 93W and listen to it several times in a row.)

Rebecca, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess - i thought I was pretty familiar with the meters cat. but I'm having trouble figuring out where 'the look of love' is. which album? I don't have trick bag, may be 1 or 2 others I dont have??

Ron, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
