is this true?

(comment made by someone watching tv next to me who i think was using this specious reasoning as a way of rectifying her own lust for teenage girls with worries of objectification. i, of course, could care less...about objectification. BRING ON THE TEENAGE GIRLS.)

jess, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't care much for leering at pop princesses. except billie piper. pop princes aren't so great either. well except ronan keating. but he's not even a teenager. there aren't enough cute boys making music videos where they parade around in skimpy catholic schoolboy uniforms. speaking of uniforms, is anyone else here strangely attracted to the catholic priest uniform? or am i alone in this sick fetish?

di, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What like AC/DC?

ducklingmonster, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AC/DC are attracted to Catholic priest uniforms? "Let There Be Rock" indeed.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only lust after riot grrrls

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the anonymous party would probably like it made known that it's not really teenage girls, but it's hard to think of pop stars as anything other than teenage girls and boys.

jess, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow teenage girls who aren't teenage girls, catholic attire and riot grrlies! So much forbidden fruitie. Lets partie!

ducklingmonster, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But we will sin and be cast out of the garden. Oh wait, we have sinned. Okay, they'll let us back in.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BILLIE!! lady di has stolen my libido and it wd be convenient for me not to have it back if i am to finish my book, or indeed this

mark s, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the media is slowly, steadily programming us to lust after boys and girls with the figures/facial features/screecby voices of pre- pubescent boys. what can it all mean?

petra jane, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Means we're all primed to join the priesthood, surely.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i like that thought.

di, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clearly I'm way out of sync on this one, but I think people who fancy celebs are a bit sad.

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why?

gareth, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah Tom, why? i mean, you're bound to think some of them are good- looking, it's only a matter of saying "Cooooor i wouldn't kick them out of bed", not "oh i want to marry this person and spend the rest of my like with them" (unless you are a mentalist stalker). i don't usually fancy celebs but i'm not immune to the charms of some of them like ooh f'rinstance i dunno JOHN CUSACK, but it doesn't interrupt the normal flow of my life or anything... personally i think that the popstar-manufactuers of late have made an APPALLING job of putting together fanicable men OR women. i mean, Westlife? Atomic Kitten? MINGERS!!

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(ps. "like" = "Life" in that mentalist sentence).

groups like Take That and the Spice Gurls, OK i didn't fancy any of them but if you wanted to look at it from a purely clinical marketing point of view, at least Take That were all sort of good-looking in a classically-plastic kind of way, and the SGs were whittled down into their various "types" so that blokes could go "oh i like mental birds me, i'll go for that Geri". n.b. not that i approve of this sort of thing of course.

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, Howard?

RickyT, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what? you fancied Howard, Rick? :)

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha I am the George Gosset of celebrity fancying. OK really it's just my personal ideas of 'fancying' causing me to wonder at other people - 'fancying' for me is something that only happens in an everyday sense, when you've got a physical three-dimensional breathing moving talking person in front of you and you can pick up on tiny unguarded fanciable things they might do/say/think. Whereas a celebrity you're likely only to encounter through a TV/cinema screen/photograph and fancying someone through that kind of filter seems odd to me. I can't relate.

I only think it's a tiny little bit sad, usually, I mean it's less sad than loads of things I do.

This is also why I never really contribute to the who-do-you-fancy threads, because they seem to be turning fancying into a shared experience and for me it just can't seem to work that way.

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i.e. maybe it's an inevitable sadness bit it's still sad.

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrr, you know what I meant Grocott.

RickyT, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark Westlife does not ming!

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They all look the same to me, them Westlife chapZor.

RickyT, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT you RACIALIST just because they are all oirish doesn't mean they look the same.

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just a coincidence then?

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I must say I haven't fancied a pop star since Baby Spice was at the height of her (ahem) powers. They're either funny looking (funny lookin' how? oh you know, just funny lookin) or that bland Britney/Buffy prettiness.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry Sarah but i shall have to be racialist too and say that they do all look the same - MINGING!! a hahaha can we turn this into a "which pop star mings the most" thread pwease?

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(um of course meaning that all of WESTLIFE look minging not that all oirish ppl ming. god i am not expressing myself too clearly today!)

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I sort of see what Tom is saying about fancying celebs. However it's possible to fancy what you know is not a real image or may not be a real image of someone. Fancying celebs is all about fantasy anyway.

What does really interest me about pop is the way the songwriters seem to be having little media battles or something, I mean Britneys songwriters must be having a ball, do they sit down and think "oh let's make her grow up for a while, CAN WE". It's like they're issuing a press statement or something. This isn't a criticism, it's just it's so intriguing to me. Slave 4 U may have been the first example of this......though I guess Lucky kind of was a bit like it too.

Ronan, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I obsessed with Michael Schumacher (okay, so he's not quite a popstar) so much that I thought about going back to uni to finish Electronics Engineering degree (and maybe learn a bit of German too) so I could go and work at Ferrari and get to know him - but it's not that I want to bonk him, it's that I think he's supernatural and I'm hoping it might be contagious.

In answer to yr question Jess, yes, I do think that is true. How could anyone not lust after Gwen Stefani??

toraneko, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eeg, what a thought. No and no again on Ms. Gwen. Then again, I do come from the Land of No Doubt and am heartily sick of her anyway.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned is a mentalist, because Gwen Stefani is PURTY even when she's all busted and tarty-looking (ie, "Southside" video).

Dan Perry, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tom = me. (of course he leaves out the inevitable fancying of fat cartoon girls.)

the anonymous party also loves gwen stefani for which i have to rethink my position on her (not gwen) some days.

jess, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned is a mentalist

Yes, but not for the reasons described.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the anonymous party also loves gwen stefani for which i have to rethink my position on her (not gwen) some days.

Q: What is your position on Gwen Stefani?
A: DOGGYSTYLE!

HAHAHAHAHAhaha... haha... ha?

Dan Perry, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I CAST THEE OUT., Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I asked for that, didn't I...

Dan Perry, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gwen Stefani pretty? Dan, whatever you've been smoking, I'd like some;> She gets some respect for finding a gimmick, and finding a way to rake in the dough....

But really, there aren't many pop stars worth lusting after, these days.....but then, living in the land of Backstreet Boys and 'NSYNC kills the eyes.

Or as a gal, I may just be a bit too old for the plastic pretty boys.

Nichole Graham, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, whatever you've been smoking, I'd like some;> *clears throat* I was gonna do Gwen S. until I got high
I'd love Gwen from behind but then I got high
I'm here on ILE and I know why
cause I got high

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are no lustworty pop stars. only jonathan rhys meyers, and he's an ACTOR.

Maria, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As far as girl popstars go - there's HUNDREDS of lustworthy ones.

As far as boy popstars go Darren Hayes is it. Oh, and Enrique. But I think it's only their mouths that I like.

toraneko, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gwen S. is SO pretty! i wouldnt get w/ her tho, pop stars are a despised untouchable class to me.

, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fiona apple is the only lustworthy girl pop star i can think of.

Maria, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't watch a Top Of The Pops or a half hour of MTV without finding at least one new pop star to fancy. I can't imagine how anyone who pays any attention to pop could fail to find dozens to fancy. I'm sure I could list a top 50 from current stars. This has been true since my early (then unacknowledged) lust for Marc Bolan in the early '70s, and I expect it will be for all of my life. I'm already old enough that it feels perverted in most cases! I'm not talking about Britney, say - Kelis (my recent fave) is out of her teens but she's still only half my age! At least Madonna continues to be slightly older than me.

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm only attracted to people who don't wash.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yuck! are they allowed to shave?

maryann, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NO! humanbody fur = ALL OVER

mark s, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I even lust after JLo.
