Summer Pressure

sometimes it feels like there is more pressure (external? internal?) to be OUT HAVING A GREAT TIME when it is summer. you must do wonderful things all day every day. its the first week after easter and the weather is grand, what am i going to do this weekend? i don't know, everythings up in the air at the minute, not sure what im doing, but YOU MUST ENJOY YOURSELF NOW! LOADS! OK?!, and this is absent in winter. its just not there

gareth, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am joining a GYM tonight because i am too fat to frolic in the sun without people thinking that i am a migratory OX that has mistakenly strayed into London. so there.

katie, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's starting to be winter out here & there's a lot of pressure to be depressed & hide fromthe world & totally shut down & shit. i'd prefer yr summer pressure.

duane, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...OR WOULD I?

duane, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all that avocado you've been scoffing, katie

Alan T, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i wasted my summer :(

i hardly walked in the balmy evening streets with bare limbs at all; never once frolicked in any park; enjoyed few cold beers sitting under an umbrella listening to warm weather music while the sun beat down overhead; avoided sprinklers and malfunctioning fire hydrants; didn't have icecream melt in rivulets on my arm; only went to the beach about four times.

i apply extra pressure to you northern hemisphere folk! don't waste yr sunny days like i did! or you'll be sorry

minna, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Katie I sympathise. One of the blokes in our office last year explained to me the theory that gorgeous women are locked away in a room all winter and are only allowed out when the sun is shining. I scoffed but then yesterday while waiting at the cash machine I realised to my horror that tis true and the sunshine brings out all these total babes leaving me all pale and excessively full of cheese and bouze & suffering greatly by comparison. Bah.

Emma, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

springtime display

Alan T, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do you think that pelting Alang with rotten avocadoes would be a good way to get rid of some of that excess flab?

katie, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

please. Gad, I'm such a smooth talker.

Alan T, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"YOU MUST ENJOY YOURSELF NOW! LOADS! OK?!, and this is absent in winter. its just not there"

That's why I love the winter!

I only really like summer when I'm free to sit around and do absolutely nothing, just watch the day fade away. Total escape from the ethic of doing stuff. Autumn and winter are much more productive times for me. Summer is not the time for dynamism or getting things done.

I think i am in a meloncholy mood this afternoon.

jel --, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The boys on my desk are currently all peering out of the windows looking down on to Oxford Street saying things like: "God look at her!" "She looks well dirty!" "I love women's hot waether clothes"

I would happily pelt them with avocado.

Anna, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If football was a year round game this wouldn't happen. Men have to have something to talk about in the close season.

Jonnie, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Oxford St is a particular hotbed of ogling sin as my cash machine incident was here too. This stunning girl was standing outside the shoe shop chatting to her mates and a couple of lads walked past and stared. Then stopped a few feet away and stared for some time whilst shaking their heads in an approving way. Grrr.

Emma, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's meeja boys for you, Anna.

Summer pressure would never, ever make me join a gym (I saw Esther's gym, LA Fitness, and it is the All Bar One of gyms) but I am very fond of Turkish baths. Does anyone know where I can get a PROPER skipping rope in central London?

suzy, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SUmmer causes me a few guilt pangs when I spend half the day in the cinema but in the end I rather like swanning around in the sunshine between cinemas - and I have basically no work to do in the summer which means I spend much, much more time out in the sunshine.

And anyway, this is London. It won't be sunny ev'ry day.

Pete, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen it alot...just what does MEEJA mean?

jel --, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[media]

michael, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think that being a leering pervertalist is the sole preserve of meeja boys.

Emma, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Means MEDIA, Jel. As said in West London poshspeak; most of these work in the meeja.

but where do I get the skipping rope? huh?

suzy, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mug a schoolgurl?

michael, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

would a 'normal' sports shop not have one? (i.e. not the Oxford St style trainer emporia)

michael, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am joining a gym also! You can get a cheap skipping rope for £1 from pound shop on Brixton High Street Suzy I do not think the quality of this matters. Or you could always go and MUG small children which is always a favourite summer passtime I enjoy.

Sarah, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aye Suzy surely a normal sports shoppe would stock such an item? though i dunno, i once tried to buy a snooker cue in one (long story) and they didn't have them, so praps not. boxing equipment purveyors perhaps? they use 'em don't they?

the main reason that i am joining a gym is not so much to look good and have meeja boys dribble after me, but that i can't be arsed buying new clothes to fit my new tubby frame. and so that i won't be mistaken for oxen, etc.

katie, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Something that is U&K = SPORTS BRAS. I would resurrect the old bras thread but I can't be bothered finding it. What IS a sports bra LIKE anyway???

Sarah, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As long as you are good at skipping you theoretically don't need a skipping rope at all.

Pete, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have joined a gym, but it is mainly to build MUSCLE so that I can CRUSH YOU ALL.

Nicole, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A sports bra is like some kind of mad oppressive thing made of 43 layers of extra thick elastic which makes a valiant effort to prevent your breasts from jiggling painfully whilst running (well, jogging. Slowly) but fails miserably as jiggling is the natural state of breasts.

Emma, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I imagine all you laydeez on here buffing and polishing yer perfected summer bodies and then swaying past this crew of 'Meeja' men and laughing in their leering faces! I like this mental picture.

Evangeline, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i (sort of) leered this year, but that was in january. not summer.

gareth, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Gareth that is a nice story! It's not creepy-leering grody at all. The problem is when they are talking to you and while the position of the head is level, the eyes are focuses intently below your face. I think that by liking same book as stranger while on train/bus whatever would be the nicest way to meet. It sends a nice message that he's attracted to you because of what you're reading rather than baby did you know you are ass-tastic in those jeans?

Evangeline, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, there's a difference between that and summer leering. Leering is one of the reasons summer makes me feel kind of meh.

Nicole, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

little tops on gurls = sunglasses for boyz. heh.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

today was like a cool summer day that's true, I mean I wandered a lot around London (and yes, sat in Easyeverything for a bit), had two lunches (but only ate at one of them) and sat in the sunshine watching the world go by and walked from Clerkenwell to Highbury. I did no ogling, I was too busy singing along with my walkman and looking at cool buildings which looked beautiful against a clear blue sky background.

chris, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to get a bloody MINIMUM WAGE JOB. And the local bookstores don't hire until 18. Someone please kill me.

Maria, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm...minimum wages

Graham, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
dont let it pass you by!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Summers nice so far, I'm still wearing a jumper. YAY!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It keeps raining here. On the plus side I am finished and have nothing to do for the next 4 months but sit in this chair.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock on Ronan! I shall be joining you soon.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

wahey! i don't know what to do with myself to be honest.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been living the 8-5 office life for a few years now, but I still get all excited about summer vacation. And then of course I don't have one any more. So then the summer breezes by and one day I wake up and it's cold outside and I wonder where my summer break went. But there's still something exciting in the air.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
perhaps you are beginning to feel the pressure ease off a little, as we hit the vale of september?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know what to do with myself to be honest

me too Ronan may 20th 2003

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you get out of the chair?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, sometimes!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Pah, what kind of slacker ARE you?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i once phoned a friend who was in the kitchen to get me a beer.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ringing people in clubs is okay though

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, this is the anthemn through all your hands up.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Theoretically, you could just switch hemispheres every 6 months or thereabouts and miss summer altogether.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 1 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

endless winter.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
I am feeling the pressure right now. Which is annoying because at every point this summer I have WANTED to have wild crazy summer adventures, the weather has disagreed with me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

that's because the weather's been utterly shite. At least if it was a proper summer we'd have the option to go outside and play if we liked. But no - the pressure's even more because we feel like we ought to be outside having fun and it's fucking raining. Then when the sun does decide to poke it's head out, we're all busy or at work.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

But no - the pressure's even more because we feel like we ought to be outside having fun and it's fucking raining. Then when the sun does decide to poke it's head out, we're all busy or at work.

That's exactly how my summer has gone so far. I think this is the coldest and rainiest summer I can remember.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have weekend pressure more than summer pressure. By Sunday, it can get really bad.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the years sure go by.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Massive wave of summer pressure just hit me while I sorted out room bookings for the end of next term - ie December. It's not nearly far enough away.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am thinking of moving to Scandanavia, or Canada's Northern Territories, or Alaska. I fucking hate hot weather. People keep saying things like: "Oh, it's gorgeous, it's the best day of the year!"

NO!

I am sick of sun screen and heat rash. Nice temperate climates, they are good.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i went outside at lunch (to go and get a big greasy fry up) and it was gorgeous. i've had an excellent Summer really tho I still feel like it has passed me by in spite of everything - ridiculous.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoy being busy, so i don't mind that there's loads of stuff happening. i love weekends like the one coming up with several things every day to choose between. fun! more fun! yay!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just clouded over severely in the last half an hour. i find it depressing, tho Summer rain is good.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

DOWNPOUR! CHUBBY RAIN IN WIMBLEDON!!

Cor. Headed this way if the rumblings are not to be mistaken.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Har har. Still sunny if hazy in Brighton, and I might go for a swim in the sea later.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
im feeling it a bit, but, its got off to a good start, after a shaky jan/feb. i feel pretty giddy actually, even hyperactive...

...possibilities...

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Yes, this is going to be a great summer, I told myself as I left the house this morning wrapped up in scarf, gloves and overcoat, being careful not to slip on the frost...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

you're still wearing a coat???

i haven't worn a coat since i got before i went to america in march.

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

er, i mean, since before i went to america.

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm in a terrible...mode right now. Don't seem to want to go out much, have little to say to anyone though not through their fault. Maybe it's post-holiday 'depression'. Perhaps things have peaked too soon?

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

This week it has been FREEZING (adopts Mike Reid voice).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

admittedly, i am the only one who turned up for work in a t-shirt today. whatver, i dont mind, its summer!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

And it's only just over 5 weeks until the longest day of the year. I hate that the Summer Solstice seems to come around so quickly as we've only just got used to it getting dark after 8pm and it's not really been that warm out (mother).

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

It is WINTER. Ne'er cast a cloot 'til May be oot, and all that.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

it *is* cold. i used to feel this PRESSURE, what a great thread. when i was a kid especially: i ought to have been OUT in the PARK and all that, not, erm, sitting in my garden, reading. i feel a similar pressure to DO THINGS the whole time these days, but now the pressure is to READ EVEN MORE and spend less time WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

N_RQ, Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Works for me!

(well it doesn't, not really, but, well, you know, I'm still breathing, so there must be something in it...)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

I savour the Spring as people never seem to want to acknowledge it anymore. It's like Middlesex, or something. Come on, let's gambol amidst the lilting cherry blossom. Then get haircuts.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

i went to the british library yesterday. oh that i could quit my job and LIVE THERE.

this is no spring, is the problem. maybe the bank holiday weekend was okay, i wouldn't know, i was indoors.

N_RQ, Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

these past two weeks i've been a mess but i'm anticipating a happy summer. no pressure at all -- i'm going to spend most of the summer in the swimming pool or checking out photography exhibits at the university.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

See Gissing's New Grub Street re. inadvisability of living in British Library.

Spring is like Middlesex. That's a good analogy.

I'm due to have a haircut tomorrow, but that's not going to make it summer.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

I haven't worn socks or tights all week! This alone makes me happy.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

But has it made anyone else happy?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Probably not sock and tight retailers, who may have lost business. But possibly plaster retailers, who will have gained business thanks to blisterage.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

I started the week in my new sandals but they're pinching my toes so i'm back in trainers. Was in a good mood this morning till i got stuck in traffic on a bus next to someone blasting out busted and mcfly tunes.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

really good weather this week. DJing at a huge night tomorrow, and sering lots of big DJs and stuff.

2 weeks of thesis doing left. then I'm finished college.

yep it's going to be a good summer. I can feel it......

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ronan, you are lucky, you still get that old-fashioned student summer feeling of tension and release. I am feeling the pressure hugely, mostly because I know I will be spending eleven hours a day in an office. If I'm not outside in the summer I find it kind of depressing.

This is a good summer. Lots of going out, lots of dancing, a ridiculous number of parties. But I can do that in December. I want to be outside. Can't wait for Glasto.

Maybe this is a good thing. Last summer peaked way too soon, felt like it was all over by August. This time I'm booking a holiday in September, to prolong it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 May 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

i haven't worn a coat since i got before i went to america in march.

This is not true. I'm fairly sure you wore it in April. I know this because its still in my flat. In my wardrobe. I can see it there now. Lurking like an unpleasant stalker.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 May 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

bah, now more than ever

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't had it at all this year! I think it's because I've been generally content. Or possibly because I'm slighter skinter than usual meaning that there's a lot to be said for weekday evenings, lying on the grass or arranging to meet friends in the park instead of going to the pub.

Maybe it's because doing nothing is so much more enjoyable in summer, whereas I hate being cooped up in the house so have to be out DOING! FUN! STUFF! all winter. Most probably its because I have a two-week break booked for October where a lot of the proper summer fun will happen. Nothing especially remarkable or out-of-the-ordinary has happened this summer, compared to the last few years, and yet I'm happy for it to be uneventful.

Really, it's not a case of whether or not you let it pass you by. You just have to let it gently carry you along.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

that's pretty good! feel like going out to buy some fruit!

then later taking some filthy mdma
