I really wonder if they actually have that much importance to the brits, it always seemed to me like the british govermnemt only keep it more because of the proud than the real importance, they dont want to look bad losind lands to some third world country, do u think they shouldnt give it to argentina or not

3 reasons. a. The sovereignty issue. b. A foothold onto Antarctica, and that includes places like South Georgia which leads nicely onto the motherlode c. Oil.

d) ideal way for thatcher to win over jingoistic members of electorate by going to war and winning??

(which, according to one piece I read yesterday was a lot closer to not happening than we were lead to believe at the time)

e. Ideal distraction for a country which was still deep in recession plus a way to pump lot's of government investment into recession hit areas and kick start the economy, which would be an idealogical no-no during peace time.

true, didn't Shorts Aircraft of Belfast get huge payouts as a result of it, only for them to go bust anyway?

It's interesting that only A-33 even mentions the people that live on the islands.

at the time I was mad in favour of the Argentines, but then I was 14. Now I think more that it is wrong to force people to join a country they don't want to, especially when it is ruled by bloodcrazed Generals happy to butcher their own people. whether it would have been better for everyone to just pay each of the islanders a million pounds each and ship them to England is a moot point.

Don't forget the squid millions - demand for (mmm)calamari in europe has rocketed. Falklands is now the wealthist British territory anywhere. They all have flocks of BMWs rather than sheep now.

eight years pass...

It’s still international waters so I’m hesitant to call this “testing.” Nevertheless...
