Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

heh - does anyone know of instances where people have been "inned" - ie. gay people getting accused of being closet straights? no particular reason for asking, i just need amusement...

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah now it works. Ktee, p'raps Brett Anderson could haf had a similar court case innit...

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like that there Mr. Anderson, dammit! Though an orc could probably take him, true.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like that there Mr. Anderson, dammit!

Ned, I'm not sure that this is the appropriate forum to proposition Brett Anderson.

(And you could at least say "please"...)

I recall a popular figure in the British Diplomacy hobby talking about how much hassle it is if you are bi-sexual, because you have to come out of the closet twice, effectively. Also, once you come out as fancying ladies as well as gents, your lesbian friends stop talking to you and your gay friends decide you are only pretending to be gay to pull girls.

Mr Cruise's lawyer said after the ruling that the actor was a "great believer in everybody's freedom to choose his own sexual preference".

*splutter* WTF??!?!

freedom to choose one's sexual preference??! given the social stigma [still] attatched to 'outing' oneself, given that court cases and PR campaigns to assert one's straightness are deemed necessary in our society, as Cruise has just demonstrated, who would < i>choose to marginalise themselves?

ME!

elizabeth anne marjorie, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

petra, would you like to elaborate?
do you think sexuality is innate, fixed, whatever? (or mainly/usually so?)
i find thee ole "but who would choose to be gay/bi/trans" line/idea/arguement to be very flimsy, and not well thought out or supported by many different epistemologies* (in particular you only need to do even a brief look at transhistorical and transcultural sexual practises, identities, and so on to pick that line completely apart, and offensive (though i realise most people who use it/ think it are most definately not intending to be offensive so like i'm not actually personally offended at you petra!) *i don't think i've ever actually used this word before so i don't know if i'm using it correctly but "disciplines" didn't seem right.
