I distrust anyone without a Gorey fetish.

There was great little radio play about him the other week, starring david suchet. I'd like to find some of his books.

This thread seems like an appropriate place to draw your attention to the really delightful British Cartoon Centre which I discovered next door to the Renoir Cinema in Bloomsbury yesterday (this is a pretty apt location since everyone you see hanging around at the Renoir looks like they might have escaped from a Posy Simmonds strip). I think the Gallery has been there for a while, but they have only just started opening all week round. And it's free! They have a fantastic exhibition up at the moment by the American cartoonist/illustrator Arnold Roth - who's vaguely in the same area as Searle and Steinberg. The exhibition includes the original artwork for an illustration for the appearance of Thomas Pynchon's 'The Secret Integration' in 'The Saturday Evening Post' - which I found inordinately exciting. I ended up having a long lovely rambling conversation with the wonderful woman who runs the place, during the course of which I came to the sad realisation that I was going to have to ask her to marry me if I tarried there a moment longer. Future attractions include a celebration of the Bash St Kids anniversary with Leo Baxendale. Go along and make a hefty donation!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the most pathetic fanboyish moments of my life was the time I met Leo Baxendale - the other was Jack Kirby. It was to do with having absolutely adored their work before even knowing their names, and still regarding them as highly when I was a comics pro myself, I think.

Anyway, you won't be surprised that I knew of this place already. An old pal of mine ran it until a disagreement over their focus led to a parting of the ways, last year sometime I think it was. I'm not sure who is running it now - I am out of touch. Do prompt us if you know when the Bash Street Kids/Baxendale (that's Leo) thing is on, as I'd like to shake his hand again. (We did discuss his working with me at one time, on a new kids' comic, but he wasn't terribly keen, sadly.)

I'm not sure if he will appreciate me mentioning it here, but a friend of mine has a cool website dedicated to Edward Gorey -

(The Bash St 50th Anniversary is coming up in November, Martin - but I think they some neat things happening before then, too)

Mark C (Mark C), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Mark - I am probably still enough in touch that someone will remind me closer to the time, I think. I don't work far from this place either, and I've only been there once.

This thread is far too short. Some random blog thoughts I had today:

Of art, humor, darkness and fantods

I love the idea that the man attended every single performance of the NYC ballet for years and years.

I am really digging the new bio of this guy –– The Strange Case of Edward Gorey by Alexander Theroux.

I love that he would sit around watching soaps & hand-sewing!

Also inspiring that he had almost no formal art education – that is the kind of thing that always gives a scribbler like myself a little hope.

ooh would read that bio. brand new? every year, i go through a pretty major gorey binge, his stuff always makes me happy, even though obviously some of it is quite dark. always regret that i never made it out to his house/museum thing when i lived in new england. my band is named after a gorey book.

tylerw, Sunday, 24 April 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

It is brand new. Published by Fantagraphics.

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 24 April 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

Somebody posted a link to one of her cartoons on another board, and I sure had a fun time wasting a few hours looking at every single one.

There is a quote Gorey said, apparently many times, related in that bio, and it haunts my mind all the time:
"When in doubt –– twirl!"

Did anyone visited the Edward Gorey house? Is it worth it? I'm thinking of taking the lady there for her birthday, considering Gorey is one of her favorite artists, if not the most influent one her artwork.

I assume you're all aware of...

I think there was a point when the inspiration for John Bellairs's Marshall, Michigan "House With a Clock in its Walls" was on the market. Looked awesome.
