Important OR Popular OR Otherwise Notable singles released between November 1st 2001 and April 30th 2002, please!

The FG will be a slimmer proposition from now on - probably only 20-25 records, but I still need your help.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only one pop idol contestant, I think...

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Freaks Electric?

RickyT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

B With Me - Mis-Teeq
Get The Party STarted - Pink

Pete, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tweet, obviously. Can we include "A Stroke of Genius", too? Or is too September 2001?

Michael Daddino, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"A Stroke..." got its 7" single release in February, so yeah I'd say so.

Still not heard Tweet!!

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

R Freaks not released yet? But I think Stroke of Genius qualifies.

Pink is a must. And how about "Bad Babysitter"?

Jeff W, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and WHERE'S! YOUR! HEAD! AT!

Michael Daddino, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't Freaks out next Monday?

RickyT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From the sublime to the ... er, crap: Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" (a US No.1 IIRC)

Jeff W, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy Elliott 4 My People Basement Jaxx remix.......possibly not that IMPORTANT and Missy may have been talked to death.

Is Murder on the Dancefloor in this bracket? If so then it must be nominated.

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Freaks is out 29th April I think, so it qualifies.

The miracles of the CD burner mean that the FG party can be much more mobile than before, and can even be multiple.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

addicted to bass. caught in the middle. hate to say i told you so.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I *think* Murder was just missed last time, also alas Party Hard by Andrew WK. But hey rules are made to be broken (maybe not for Andrew WK).

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brandy's "What About Us." J. Lo/Jah Rule's "Ain't It Funny (Remix)." Osymyso, "Intro-Introspection."

Michael Daddino, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

J-Lo & Ja Rule - "Ain't That Funny"
Tweet - Oops (Oh My)
Faith Evans - You Gets No Love
System Of A Down - Chop Suey! (not sure if that actually falls in that time frame, though)
'N Sync - "Gone"
Usher - "U Got It Bad"
Brandy - "What About Us?"
P.O.D - "Youth Of The Nation"
Celine Dion - "A New Day Has Come"
No Doubt feat. Bounty Killer - "Hey Baby"
Linkin Park - "In The End"
Shakira - "Whenever, Wherever"
The White Stripes - "Fell In Love With A Girl"
Jimmy Eat World - "The Middle"
Busta Rhymes feat. P. Diddy & Pharrell J - "Pass The Courvoisier Part II"
Alanis Morissette - "Hands Clean"
Natalie Imbruglia - "Wrong Impression"
Michelle Branch - "Everywhere"
Jewel - "Standing Still"
Nickelback - "How You Remind Me"
"Escape" - Enrique Iglesias
Hoobastank - "Crawling In The Dark"
Creed - "My Sacrifice" (every focus group needs a lame duck)

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Addicted To Bass and No Doubt essential. Can I register a nay vote for Shakira?

RickyT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So

Jeff W, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do we not think Shakira's popular/significant? Big non-US/non-UK pop star? Line about breasts/mountains? Liked by a fair few voters I'd guess....

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can't fight the skanky Columbian flavor, RickyT.

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

X-press 2 'Lazy'' Fischerspooner 'Emerge' (I reckon you need a token new-electro, synthcore track)

Anna, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah we do need a nu-electro track - Fischerspooner though? Does anything fall into our release window?

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was hoping someone else would say X-Press 2.

It's difficult to pick a single nu-electro track, I'm leaning towards "Hand to Phone" by Adult though. Is that in the window?

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh aye, Anna - more than one, maybe? I nominate "Silver Screen (Shower Scene)", if that qualifies temporally.

Jeff W, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

new electro = Tiga's "Sunglasses at Night" perhaps?

scott p., Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not more than one unless/until they start charting big - I suspect FG VII will have a few.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Silver Screen Shower Scene is too technoey to be a good representative. Also I think it may miss the window.

"Sunglasses at Night" was second in my head behind "Hand to Phone".

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not "Gone" - "Girlfriend"!!!

More international stuff! (Excepting the Baha Men.)

Daver, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Silver Screen first came out in 2000, but I think it got re-released to co-incide with Kittinz and Thee Glitz.

The 12" of Emerge is still knocking around in the shops - that said I think it is older. Whole album being re-released in May.

Sunglasses? 'Rippin Kittin' by Golden Boy (actually not sure about the release date on that either)

Anna, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The nu-electro has the advantage of being international too, a lot of it. DITTO SHAKIRA heheh.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And did someone mention Fat Joe w/ Ashanti - "What's Love"? I really hope so. (I'd also recommend Ashanti's "Foolish", but that song's all sorts of weepy blah, and I'd rather not deal w/ it. But, it's out there, so pheff.)

Daver, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

k-blimey, quick someone say Daniel Bedingfield before Marcello raps us across our collective knuckles!

Jeff W, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AND "Saturday (Oooh! Ooooh!)", by Ludacris!

Daver, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am starting to think that this 'nu-electro' is the nu-indie.

Sarah, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Timo Maas-To Get Down.

And seriously Death in Vegas-Scorpio needs to be included, I realise noone has heard it, but it's pretty unique to me, and definitely one of the major dance singles of the last while as far as I can see.

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

every focus group needs a lame duck

In this case, more like a dismembered egret.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, and what do you think SHOULDNT be in there, given we've got limited space...?

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mostly borderline suggestions by now, I’m afraid: "Let’s Push Things Forward," the Streets
"Gotta Get Through This," Daniel Beddingfield
"Somethin’ Stupid," Robbie & Nicole
"Lessons Leart From Rocky I to III," Cornershop
some sort of Haven/Lostprophets/Electric Soft Parade UK rock, unless it has already been determined to be totally insignificant
"Silent Sigh," Badly Drawn Boy
"Who We Be," DMX
"Rock Star," NERD
The million and two songs with Ashanti on them… tom: are you letting new folks take part in FG?

scott p., Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Escape...

JM, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FG ballots will go to all the forum regulars and a bunch of other people, and yeah some new people too hopefully.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe we can get one of the rockcritics.com guys to forward a ballot to Chuck Eddy or Greil Marcus...

Michael Daddino, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That would suck. They're not US. Surely the point of the focus group is to haf OUR opiniongs, not crap old MAINSTREAM opinions, mang.

Sorry, still grumpy due to estate agent/work etc.

Sarah, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The point of the focus group is to have people who will actually fill in the ballots - beyond that I'm not too arsed.

The big FG problems needing solving:

i) transatlantic "what the fuck?" issues. We got the right balance last time I think.

ii) gap between live FG participants ('in the spirit' of the feature but v.drunken comments) and at-PC participants.

iii) non-response (25 songs rather than 35 makes taking part less arduous).

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, you're right Tom, Shakira is ideal Focus Group fodder. I just can't stand that bloody song with its fricking pan pipes.

RickyT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I despise it too. I despise everything about it. stealing lyrics from fortune cookies does not a good single make.

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We should include some songs that are/were big in Germany. Like "Crying At The Discotheque" by ALCAZAR.

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alcazars new single is way better than that shitty first one...honestly. As soon as I hear the name of it I'll get back to here.

Ronan, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, scratch that. We should include "Photoshop Sucks" by Apoptygma Berzerk.

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Photoshop Sucks" by Apoptygma Berzerk

What the hell is with this outbreak of gothicity?

RickyT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Goth is the new pop!

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*with a few* = with a view (i must've had a few)

Jeff W, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Records wuvved from staying up all night *watching* MTV: "Breaking Up The Girl" Garbage and DB Boulevard "Point of View".

And "Overprotected".

Graham, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All the votes in the world doesn't mean something will actually show up on the shortlist though most of these will probably make it. I'd second Sophie E-B, Where's Your Head At?, and Mis-Teeq, nominate "Let's Push Things Forward", and Will Young, and whither Gordon Haskell eh?

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

<FUNNYVOICE>Well, Oi zink we should haff ze song by Creeed in zere.</FUNNYVOICE>

Someone completely different from Dan Perry who has hijacked his email address, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Fabolous?

bnw, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Allen Jackson one about WTC is that current enough?

anthony, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm amazed nobody's suggested Mystikal. Unless they have and I missed it.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i second/third/fourth/fifth "pass the courvoisier pt II"!!

geeta, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I interviewed Noel Gallagher last week, Ned. That should put you in your place. :-)

Hey, I've met him twice, so ner. :-P

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

does the Lo Fidelity Allstars' "Feel What I Feel" qualify?

M Matos, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No. And I did mention Mystikal. And yes, The Streets, of course. Single comes out April 15. By the way, that Hives record was a hit in the Netherlands in February or something of 2001. And I'm sure the Swedes were there way before that even.

JoB, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

LeAnn Rimes - "Can't Fight The Moonlight"!

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alien Ant Farm - The Movies, I liked it.

jel --, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am always upset at how little country gets in these lists so here is is :
01)I Breathe In, I Breathe Out, Chris Cagle
02)Blessed, Martina McBride
03)The Cowboy In Me, Tim McGraw
04)Drive (For Daddy Gene), Alan Jackson
05)Jezebel Chely Wright
06)Days Of America,Blackhawk
07)Sweet Music Man Reba McEntire
08)Modern Day Bonnie And Clyde Travis Tritt
09)Mendocino County Line Willie Nelson w/Lee Ann Womack
10)Barricades and Brick Walls Kasey Chambers

anthony, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How IS it that I'm so late for these topical things;>?

Notable singles: Good (or otherwise popular)

***Lo-Fi All Stars: "Sleeping Faster" (does that still count, or is it too new?)

***Basement Jaxx: "Romeo" (Loved "Where's Your Head At?", but Mike and Tom already seconded---and tripled---it)

***Zero 7: "Destiny"

***Alicia Keys: "Fallin'"

***IIO: "Rapture"

***A-Pop: "Kathy's Song"

There's more, but the worst is much more fun:

***Creed: "Higher" ***Nickleback: "How you remind me" ***The Strokes: "Last Nite" *** whoever does the song "Kryptonite" ***Trik-Turner: "Friends + Family"

Yeah, it's short, but tis 4 in the morning, so...;>

Nichole Graham, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Either Hero or Escape by Enrique

Toxicity - System of A Down

Oi - More Fire Crew

Jonnie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah! Hero definetely has to be in it! Another 8 or 9 from me for that one!

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT is this 'TWEET'?!

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um - being a pedant, but Buster Ryhmes 'Pass The Courvoisier (Part ii)' isn't out in the UK until May 6th.

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

while we're at it, just to be completist, Freaks is out on 22nd, so def OK

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also i'll second DB Boulevard, but it looks like that won't make the 25 at this rate. <repeating self>I'm still smarting from Supermen Lovers not getting in the last FG </repeating self>

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pet Shop Boys-Home and Dry

Does Green Velvet-La La Land fit into the bracket? Most likely it's too old, but I think it merits a place beyond as a representative of nu-electro. There's little or no dance songs where the vocal is as important, at least that I can think of.

The time bracket seems so large, almost impossible to cut it down. Still.....

Ronan, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

defiantly the pet shop boys

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

US singles count too so Busta is OK I think - the onl;y problem is that the UK voters always underrate the US stuff that hasn't crossed the pond yet, eg "Big Pimpin", "Try Again", Blu Cantrell etc.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the no. of songs is a guideline - if there end up being 27 obvious candidates I'm not cutting 2 just for tidiness sake.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Songs which also have been popularised through mp3 = DUD because NOT ALL OF US CAN ACTUALLY GET TO HEAR THEM!

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What songs are these Starry? Also you gave a billion points to that massive non-MP3 chart hit Invasion Of The Gabber Robots so SHUT YOUR MOUF.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Britney - I am not a girl, not yet a woman.

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blu Cantrell was one of my faves from the last FG and that was where I first heard it!

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Putting the Pet Shop Boys in the FG would be grossly sentimental.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HA HA yes and I do not regret it for a second. I thought that there were several mp3 selections up there, then again I may be on crack.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills (you know it makes sense)

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a few things which haven't come out in Britain yet like Tweet but Tweet has to go in because it's a filthy tale of self-love.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why would it be grossly sentimental , the new album is god liek

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but good albums are not what the FG is about - why should the PSB get in and not any other modestly sized hit by a band that's been around the block a few times?

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Focus group is too ROCKIST.

Also please include Outkast; Shakira; Sheryl Crow.

alext, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey yes Outkast!

The intro to Shakira sounds like the riff in "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd except it last 2 seconds instead of 200. Good for Shakira!

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay then sending my love by email 'cause its so slick and banal in its cybertude

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HOLLY VALANCE - KISS KISS...released april 29th. Y'all be talking about it.

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four weeks pass...
I've done the shortlist now. It'll be 30 songs long BUT what I'm going to do is send 25 to US voters and 25 to non-US voters with the other 5 as an appendix i.e. really please don't go out of your way to comment on these which you won't actually even know probably.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

N.B my Holly prediction.

jel --, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Holly Valance is v.important inclusion. Also, its relative recency is a plus when it comes to the FG VI finally being published in Winter 2003.

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So what's the shortlist, Tom?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ELBOW - NEWBORN

Chris, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can i just say that this week's top 10 is excellent. top of the pops will be a delight. (Nickelback are there to prove the rule)

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan - I'll post the shortlist on FT and e-mail invited voters when I get my home internet connection back (i.e. in a little while) - if it really does take ages I'll post it here from work.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As I never stumbled across this thread before, none of you will be motivated to marvel at Sticky's "More Weed!!!" (sigh)

Tim, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If "Bouncin' Back" didn't make it I'll be sad.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mystikal did.

Tom, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
