The clue is in the question...

Emma, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well we have lots of hip hop and r and b , pop isnt just britney doncha know

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Cos there hasn't been a country hit in the UK since Billy Ray Cyrus?

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony, we could have alt.cunt.ree if you wish Ryan Adams to be present. I dunno where he charted but he was on TOTP.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

billy ray cyrus once gave me the eye for asking for an autograph (for my step grandmother). he later pointed at me from the stage (converted from an 18 wheeler in the parking lot of a stadium), his finger following me wherever i walked. i think he may have gotten the wrong impression.

R&B and hip-hop gets onto the pop charts.

Also country has been in the focus group Anthony - the Soggy Bottom Boys, remember?

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that was not intended to be country but a novelty. Its just ionteresting that hip hop has crossed over but country hasn't

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suggest LONG LANKY WOMAN then.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This reminds me I must copy that truck driving man CD for you Anthony.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the one Blue Grass CD that I have.

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and i ow you harry smith

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

country crossed over = elvis = rock and roll = rock = not pop hurrah (actually not hurrah, i like country)

mark s, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well look at how vital country is in three countries where (some/alot) of ilxers reside. But those countries seem insular to the other charts. ( The COuntries being Oz,Canada and Amerka)

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hasn't Shania Twain been in the Focus Group? And surely Sheryl Crow must be next time around after her stunning return to form with "Soak up the Sun"?

alext, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Return to form? I beg to differ. Her last hit was "My Favourite Mistake" which was ace and this one after a good intro doesn't quite scratch the spot.

Also Sheryl isn't country surely? But YES Anthony Shania was in the first FG.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Shania has crossed over hasnt she ? I know i am being a pedant on this but i think its kinda important .

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes Anthony but crossed over = got into the pop charts hence EVERYONE IN THE FOCUS GROUP has by definition crossed over. Crossover is what the feature is about. If you want more country in FT in general write about it! :)

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yr right and i will, maybe a review of the country chart, something pithy . Hmm, email me off board about this .

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As long as this doesn't mean that Alan Jackson will be in the Focus Group, I don't care.

Nicole, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Miss Jackson if you're nasty...

Nicole, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" wasn't really much of novelty hit -- it actually won the CMA award for Single of the Year last year.

I am always for putting a token cross-over country hit in the Focus Group. "Can't Fight the Moonlight" might be a good choice, since within our time frame, it did major chart action in the UK and even went gold in the US, but it was released back in August 22, 2000, according to amazon.com!

Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can't Fight The Moonlight was written on the roof of a New York apartment building and stringly influence by a neighbour kids rap pumping out of the window = not country.

Pete, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was country at its soul, though.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um - New Jersey at its soul.

Anyway we had Country Grammar in FG3.

Pete, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Return to form?

She had a form?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You've seen the way she dresses, Ned.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna talk About ME!!!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Country makes it BIIIG in the billboard all-inclusive, tho not pop charts. But Dixie Chicks, surely!?

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You've seen the way she dresses, Ned.

Feh, in a word.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brad Paisley, yo. Make it happen.
