On account of the Queen Mother's funeral. Can't tell if it's for the whole day or not from here (looking out of second storey window).

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As long as they don't shut the 24 hour tescos on Cowley Road I'm not arsed.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am. I have to actually put some thought into where to buy lunch.

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Show some respect and fast.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fast as in the verb.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was really really hoping for a bank holiday today...I guess we get an extra day at the jubilee.

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the shops on Oxford St are shut from 10:30-13:00. I usually go for lunch at 12:30 so am not happy at all.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um very sorry. Great loss to the nation, during the war, hats, lovely smile, communal outpouring of grief, BBC was wrong to wear burgandy etc etc etc etc.

[ ]

That was a period of silence. And now I will STARVE (or fast) as penance and nothing to do with M&S at all.

(I feel sorry for those who knew her, but I didn't. What am I expected to feel?)

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I doubt it Jel. A blurbled announcement came through on our TANNOYS earlier. "Whot did that sa" I arsked co-worker Damieng. "Gotta be quiet for the Queen Mutter" he reply. "Oh", say I. "But I haf not spoken all morning due to my ANGER at being given a court summongs".

Those are the breaks, kid. You should bring your own lunch anyway. I am going to Victoria for lunch I hope a PUB is open as I need a stiff GIN.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the best tribute. Gawd bless yer ma'am. I'll have a G & T in the pub tonight if I can get Carsmile to go.

Anna I didnt actually mean you should fast. What about Pret, isn't that open?

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No - we do get the Tuesday in addition to the Monday for the Jubilee.

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pret is still under Anna Sanctions due to loosing my trust on Coronation Egg sandwiches.

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You didnt buy one of those surely?? Blimey.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fucking great, I need all the money I can get, I don't need another fucking day off.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, I am amazed you people don't keep walking into things or something, the shops have all had signs on the doors for DAYS now saying they would be shut 10:30-13:00 or not opening at all until 13:00.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha that's what i said: ANNA YOU CAN ONLY BLAME YOUSELF!! It is egg and chutney = it is an anti-mouth art gesture!!

mark s, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

by mistake (eg i totally forgot) i was playing ascension's "as above so below" very loud during the two-minute silence two years ago => "the unpleasantness at the bellona club" is (partly) about the hypocrisy of the two-minute silence, which actual shell-shocked vets of the trenches were very extremely cynical about

mark s, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't go back down the egg blame route. Oh me oh my.

I never pay any attention to Oxford Street unless it's to the huge crowds of people when I think "Goawaygoawaygoaway."

Sarah - you are bound to have a new and well paid job by June.

Anna, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You anglos are mad .

anthony, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's very quiet at work today, hardly any calls have come in since 11am. Is this the same for others and could it be related to the funeral? It seems a bit odd if this is the case.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We didn't shut. We played Arabic music very loudly. The Queen Mum was a big fan of Palestinian music.

Pete, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a silly news report about this on NPR this morning, the reporter wanted to know if London had shut down because people were in such mourning for the Queen Mother.

Nicole, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's just like any other day here...cataloguing books and thats about it. *sigh* It so should've been a bank holiday, I didn't mind the Queen Mum.

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My personal tribute involved Danger! High Voltage! by the Wildbunch. (I'd have played Gin And Juice if I'd remembered).

Tom, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

went past somerfield at five to one: queue of cross east-endahs waiting outside, "yes yes the ppl's queen mum, but i have TP and eggs to buy, HURRY IT UP PLEASE!"

mark s, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I need the money NOW before I get a county court judgement actually so a new job by June = not helpful now. Also, HAH. I am now not only angry, I am a bit drunk and bitter.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The British embassy here was open for business as usual.

Something to look forward to:
Not hearing "Our royal correspondent Jennie Bond joins me now live..." every bloody day.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No one here bothered. I'm with Sarah on it not being a bank holiday because working two 4 day weeks recently has been mighty annoying. Especially because I input people's timesheets and notice another temp blagged loads of overtime to make up for it. and the only way for me to do that is not do anything all day, which I think they might notice somehow. argh.

Bill, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wanna be like Aerosmith and go on a permenant vacation, so just ignore my bank holiday rantings!

jel --, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was standing outside Notre Dame when they put her in, I completely forgot about it.
