let us praise Ashley Judd

She is the most graceful and perfect woman to have ever lived and we are lucky that she's famous, bcause otherwise we may never have glimpsed her simple majesty. However, her films are all terrible. Discuss.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Natalie Portman? She's in a similar age bracket, so that's a plus.

JM, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure Jimmy - in the film Anywhere But Here Judd was at least ten years the senior of Portman.

Judd = rub. Lesley Judd is much better.

Pete, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer, I would've said the very same thing were it not for you saying it.

Her best role = playing the damsel in distress while locked in Dick Vitale's fevered clutches during a U of Kentucky college basketball game. You could FEEL the TERROR.

_Smoke_ was a decent flick, tho.

Daver, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She was really good in an episode of Star Trek TNG where she and Wesley 'preciously annoying; Crusher got it together.

Did it for me anyway...

Nathan Barley, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but smoke was AWFUL!

i had no idea she was in Star Trek... worried about seeking out because i fear her utterly perfect face may be compromised klingonstyle...

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How are Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd in the same age bracket? Isn't Ashley something on the order of ten years older than Natalie (who, BTW, I almost accidentally ran over four weeks ago).

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What exactly is graceful and/or perfect about Ashley Judd?

Kris, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kris if it's not self-evident then you are not one of the elect. when the time comes to evacuate the planet, you will be put on the "second" spaceship.

Dan you MUST tell your running-over story. i will clamp down on my lip as hard as it takes not to laugh out loud.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There really isn't much to tell. I was picking up Joei after one of the final rehearsals of her opera. As we were driving down one of the smaller one-way streets that weave throughout the Harvard campus, we came across a young woman, obviously a student, who had come out of one of the local sub shops (Pinocchio's, for those familiar) and was walking down the middle of the road. She was too busy scoffing her sandwich to notice that a car was coming towards her. I flashed my lights, but she carried on as if she owned the street and like there wasn't a perfectly good sidewalk two yards to her right. Joei and I immediately began our litany against the self-absorbed Harvard students (never mind that we used to be exactly that) and I ended up having to swerve around this girl, who looked up at the last minute and jumped onto the sidewalk, all startled. I immediately began to giggle.

When Joei asked why I was laughing at the stupid girl, I answered, "I almost ran over Queen Amidala. That would have screwed up Episode 3, wouldn't it?" Joei shook her head at me and we went home.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had her in my motorhome once when I was a Teamster for TV commercials/videos. She was filming a Japanese ad and they put her in all these awful day-glo 80s clothes. She was alright, a bit cold but pleasant enough. Her Scotish race car driver fiance was quiet but friendlier. And sexy! I remember she had a bunch of Joni Mitchell CDs. And Wynona's most recent.

I don't know, she has the kind of vacuous Hollywood poise that drives me nuts. I can't stand her, really. Maybe if I was straight I'd feel differently. Sorry, Tracer, I've probably un-redeemed myself now...

Arthur, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Wynona's most recent.
Most recent what? Stolen goods? heh.

nathalie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh Arthur. you too. it's going to be lonely on Planet Hollywood.

Tracer hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, her sister. Did I spell it right? I always forget which one spells it with the "y" and which one spells it with the "i". Guess that's what Google's for when you're not as lazy as me.

Wow, that first sentence in my last post is really blunt and inelegant, even for me. "Yeah, I had her in my motorhome. What of it?"

Arthur, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's how rumors get started, Arthur.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of her eyes are wonky.

Ally, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmm lazy eyes.... perfect on any planet

i think it's obvious that i sort of admire here more than i want to get with her (though the line btw the 2 is hazy). i love that poise. how nothing rattles her ever, but she never seems uptight a la Audrey Hepburn my other ice queen. ashley can HANG with POISE. i heard her talk on jon stewart about "spanking" her husband at trivial pursuit and i got so jealous.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Invasion of the Near-sighted Robots" by The Laziest Eyes On Mars! "All you googly-eyes are belong to us!"

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet I could beat her at Trivial Pursuit.

Kris, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's a "bow-wow painted red" (arts and leisure)?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, sounds racist. Probably something to do with cards? I didn't say I could beat you, I said I could beat Ashley Judd. Hey, "arts and leisure" isn't even a real category!

Kris, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh wait, hot dog + ketchup, right?

Kris, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, that's what she won with. Now, what would you like to know about how she does her nails?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I almost ran over Queen Amidala. That would have screwed up Episode 3, wouldn't it?

I like the idea of Dan running away over dark fields pursued by the vicious Lucasfilm drone killrobots.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry is a very bad man.

RickyT und Katie, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

couple years ago she was in foggy SF, stayin in a ritzy hotel. got a cold, but due to (dubious reason), she didn't want to have to deal with the cold out or go to a doc. her asst ended up negotiating v hard for a house(hotel?) call from one of UCSF's best. it didn't work to my knowledge.

bc, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

***I had no idea she was in Star Trek... worried about seeking out because i fear her utterly perfect face may be compromised klingonstyle...***

TH: She'd have made a better looking Vulcan, instead;> The episode is somewhat normal for the series, though. You didn't miss much. She was only on "Star Trek", once.

Nichole Graham, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer: be aware that what appears to be Ashley's "poise" is in fact just the steely-eyed certainty of fundamentalist religion.

(This is what I am told by someone who used to work in some restaurant in Tennessee where she would eat: people would try to talk to her and she would start telling them about Jesus, such that there was a massive reversal and suddenly the non-celebrities were looking for ways out of the conversation. Okay if this was her plan that would be cool, but these stories date from her pre-fame days, when she was known to others only as "the hot Judd who wants to act," so no I think she just has Jesus in her heart.)

Bitsuh, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus is way cooler than Ashley Judd.

Kris, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if this was her pre-fame days who were the "non-celebrities"?

mark s, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Natalie Portman? She's in a similar age bracket, so that's a plus.

I mean MY age bracket...

JM, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They misheard her, Nitsuh. Judd-Leader was actually talking about RHESUS monkeys they'd used to make sure that space travel was okay for us. She wants us to believe in something, yes, but it's not Jesus: simply the promise of a better life. On Judd-Station 9.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ashley is a goddess......I think I know what you mean......actors by nature are kind of corny and she is not.....just this unflappable, rarified sexiness and attitude you can't learn......yo, I never read about the showbiz scene because I know I'm cooler than all of them combined, they can't excite me......but I don't think I'm cooler than Ashley......anyways, I think current competition = Julianne Moore.

Yo Tracey Trace, have you seen the paparazzi clip of Ashley and Salma Hayek in a car, and Ashley flashes everyone? It's choice......

Natalie Portman had potential but is now corny.....fodder for those awful Korean boys.

Ramosi, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
This saves me creating "Defend the indefensible: Ashley Judd"

based on the trailer for her upcoming film Twisted, and also the fact that her last few starring vehicles have become synonymous for cheap button-pushing thrillers.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They always have the wise older, black detective too.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Stretching wise to include Samuel Jackson (and black to include Tommy Lee Jones), yeah.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

she's quite attractive

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't she a conservababe?

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hockey Judd... swoooooon

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

she gives the most pretentious interviews I've ever suffered through on E!

She has mind-destroying gorgeous legs.

The Ya Ya Sisterhood is one of the five worst movies I've ever watched stoned on cable in the middle of the night.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the Heart Is rules.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ruby in paradise is one of my favorite movies of all time and i love the one where she plays the crazy bank robbing wife of luke perry. she's fucking fierce in that movie. i like all her movies. even the bad ones cuz for some reason all her bad movies are infinitely watchable. she was in that surreal trance film that makes no sense with ewan mcgregor but i can't remember the title. definite dope-smoking classic.and i loved her as reed, swoosie kurtz's prim and proper daughter on Lifetime-fodder t.v. series Sisters.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You're not thinking of the Ewan McGregor movie with two angels trying to get him and Cameron Diaz together, are you?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i was gonna link to the voice's 'where the heart is index' but it's not as funny as i thought it was

I'd do her.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

she was in heat too. that's a good movie. the luke perry based-on-a-true-story-suburban-bank-robber movie was called normal life. and it's great! rent it out. she does a great woman on the verge performance. the ewan movie she was in was eye of the beholder. it's completely fucked-up and it doesn't make a lick of sense. some people would say it is horrible, but i say smoke lots of pot and rent it tonight!!!! and if you have never seen ruby in paradise, well, it's just a wonderful film. it really is. same guy who did ulee's gold. same feel to it too.(there was a television movie made about the same suburban bank-robbers starring lori loughlin of full house fame-it wasn't as good though) check out the scenes of her that got cut out of natural born killers, they are pretty funny.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

john mcnaughton of Henry:portrait of a serial killer fame directed normal life. and if you never rented it cuz luke perry was staring at you on the cover of the video box it was a trick and you really should have rented it cuz even he is good in it!!

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah she was in Marilyn & Norma Jean with Mira Sorvino which is a fucking EXCELLENT movie. It's trashy as hell but her performance in it is excellent. I wish she'd play mean more often.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

She got naked in Double Jeopardy and reveals a body to be proud of. Yummy.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha, "eye of the beholder," that movie was ridiculous

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

keith- i think the hockey team was formed in '94 or '95. i think ashley judd is hott, but i think she is at best a mediocre actress. i find it ridiculous that she lacks the ability to do a southern accent. she is from kentucky! and even went to college here! it can't be that hard!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always found her very compelling ie I fancy her rotten.

Dan's Nat Portman story's gonna be used to make me seem a more interesting conversationalist at some future point.

I think Tracer is right, but I am not sure I have actually seen her act in anything, other than Heat, which I can't remember much about other than it was good. I did see a clip of an interview the other day and she seemed on top of things. In heat, too.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This whole thread and just one mention of Ruby in Paradise? Insanity. I love that movie, and her in it. I didn't know about the conservababe/evangelist stuff...maybe that was the secret agenda of the Cole Porter film, to encourage gay men to marry Ashley Judd.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott Seward and Gypsy Mothra I kiss you both. Ruby in Paradise is great and Ashley Judd is heart-breakingly good in it. Her choices since are a dreadful disappointment, of course, but Ruby in Paradise built up such goodwill that I'm willing to give her a pass for pretty much anything. (That said, I thought Eye of the Beholder was borderline unwatchable.)

Has anyone seen a momumentally awful SATC-type film she was in called Someone Like You, with Hugh Jackman and Greg Kinnear in it as well? She's beyond insufferable in it. Nothing can take away from her gorgeous mug tho.

She's married to a race car driver and I think she still does hockey calenders.

Living a quiet life as a mother running a small flower shop, Rebecca Winstone thought she had everything under control. She was doing everything right: joking with the neighbors, surrounding herself with good friends, even going to PTA meetings -- but she was unable to keep her past safely tucked away.

Now that her son Michael is missing in Europe, Becca’s previous life is blowing up in her face. Once one of the top agents in her field, Becca was a CIA operative who left it all behind, afraid that her involvement would put her son in danger. But now her greatest fear has come true. Her old skills are coming back to her naturally, and when combined with the fury of a mother -- she’s the most dangerous she’s ever been. God help whoever has him.

I have always loved Ashley Judd, just noticed this thread. I think she is so beautiful.

She was really good in the Yaya Sisterhood film. I was forced to watch that film with someone's mother and really didn't dig it. I don't like films that focus on Southern women, hate the way they are portrayed... whole other thread. Anyway, she was good in that, I thought. I was interested in her character and wish she had played the character through the entire film. Not a Sandra Bullock fan.

I loved her in Frida and have been wanting to watch Ruby in Paradise again. I only saw it once on the big screen when it came out. I was like 22 then so I wonder what I would think of it now.

Kinda thought this Ashley Judd show looked like it could be fun based on the commercial, but then I looked up the creator of the show. His previous writing credits include:

See Spot Run
Tomcats
The Spy Next Door
The Lion King II: Simba's Pride
National Treasure: Book of Secrets

So no.
