hi, here is my phone number

have you ever gone up to a stranger you liked, and given them your phone number? has anyone ever come up to you and done this?

i have never done this, but it was done to me once. a girl came up to me and gave me a piece of paper with her number on it and a message "i like you, give me a call?" or something like that. i did call it, and we got something together, and now we are good friends. its the only time its happened to me, and its the only time shes done that.

doing this is perceived as mentalist isn't it? but, really, whats the worst that could happen? why don't we do this more often? i kind of regret not giving the saramago my number now. i've decided maybe i should go through with things like this when i see someone i like.

so, tell me your experiences...

My now best friend T. did this to me at a party (in dungeness!! hurrah!!) but we did have mutual friends.

i meant to say the saramago girl not saramago (ie she was reading saramago on the tube)

Here in America we have this thing called missed connections so that if you don't give girl/guy/sheep your phone number you can post something online in your local paper babbling about how you think the person/barnyard animal/small compact car was really fab and that you "just" missed giving them your number cause they a) got off the tram too soon, or b) were sheared and slaughted before you got the chance. It's really fun to read 'em and I think they are occassionally successful. That said, you should probably just skip the shy American missed connections bit and give out your number.

I used to give out my number all the time when I worked retail, although in all fairness I usually talked to people for a while before giving them my number so they weren't complete strangers. I did give out my number to a couple of very strange people (and one grade A looney definitely springs to mind) but also made some great friends doing this.

i read this as "in dungarees" and it made perfect sense. odd.

Did the slaughtered sheep ever get in touch from beyond the incinerator?

An ex-work colleague of mine gives out his business card to girls he'd like to know better. I always found this kinda creepy. (To be fair, when I saw him do it, he did sometimes exchange a few words with the woman first. Success rate: unknown, but better than zero he says.)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to answer the q: i've never done this. actually thinking about it i did once go up to someone after a lecture and say "you look cool, who are you?" and ended up being quite good friends with them. i can't really imagine doing this, as i'm crap enough at extending my social circle via getting to know friends of friends, but i agree with gareth; what's the worst that can happen?

toby, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no way of knowing the success rate on contacting slaughtered (or soon to be slaughtered) sheep via Missed Connections, but I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that it is a pretty unlikely that such things occur. I'm not very much into the occult though. Perhaps dead sheep are contact-able via ouija boards and the like?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure if the question means did you give the person your phone number without any preliminary conversation, or what. I've given my phone number out many times to people I've chatted with for a few minutes, but not completely out of the blue.

I've done this three times - gone up to a complete stranger, give him my phone number, giggle, then run away. Once, he called and we dated for a month until I realized what a loser he was. Second, he called and we were supposed to meet for drinks, but that fell through. Third, he didn't call...

66% success rate. Not bad. I should do it more often, I guess

Anyone who tries this after Ghost World is a FULE.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What happens in Ghost World, then? Or is it patently obvious?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[the teenage stars of the fillum phone up pretending to be the woman. hilarity ensues]

Graham, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ned even if you didn't see the movie i thought you were an eightball fan?

ethan, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...but heartbreak and humiliation for poor Seymour.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You should rent Ghost World Ned, there's Jedis in it.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there are not.

ethan, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, and I had almost tricked Ned into renting it. Damn.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i've never done this. its happened to me though. he came up to me in the pub and started pestering me while i was on the computer. his name was matty. (remember THAT thread?)

di, Thursday, 11 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to doubt the efficacy of your approach, Nicole, even without Ethan's revelation. ;-) Jedis are only found in John Waters movies, duh.

i thought you were an eightball fan?

I've only read a few issues, but I do enjoy the ones I have. However, I've not read the full Ghost World sequence yet. Until I do, I'm not watching the movie. Call me a vague purist (it's the same reason why I have To Kill a Mockingbird sitting around in my DVD pile still unviewed).

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you VAGUE PURIST!!

electric sound of jim, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This seems to me to be a pretty specific type of purism. Definitely pick up Ghost World the comic, as it is a lot better than the movie (which was okay, but seemed to miss what I thought was great about the comic).

Alex in SF, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ghost world comic is great & very different from the movie yes -- but the movie was also good i thought mainly b/c of buscemi -- thora birch suxor as enid

i keep thinking that i like adrian tomine better than clowes

onto phone numbers: most uber-weird is when people who start randomly talking to you at cafes give you their business cards. fr some reason phone number scrawled on back of envelope = charming, but the business card = networking/fax me/etc - i dunno why i think that. maybe i would feel differently if i had business cards.

geeta, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Optic Nerve is good and generally more consistent than Eightball which unfortunately has moments that are rather ponderous. I still prefer Clowes overall, but I can acknowledge that he has more than a few failures. I dug Hate more than all the rest when it was alive.

Business cards suck.

Alex in SF, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How about if you scrawl your home number on the back of your business card? I do that all the time. I mean, they're right in my wallet, and they've got my name printed on them. The message I'd be trying to give certainly wouldn't be "fax me"...

Sean, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just changed my phone number, actually. It's now (212) 479-7990 and I'm quite proud of having a 212 so I'm telling everyone.

Ally, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NO FUCKING FEAR

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure if this is urban legend or not, but supposedly you should BEWARE area code 809 in the States. Apparently it links to the British Virgin Islands or some such place, and scammers will try to get you to call ... so when you get your phone bill, you're out a few thousand dollars.

oh, expect a lot of heavy breathing, Ally.

Dare, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't fall for that - I use a pay-as-you-go mobile (what Yanks call a "cell. 'phone") so if my money runs out my connection cuts off. No thousands of quid out for ME.

Brave Ulysses, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean, business cards just seem so cold and impersonal. I guess you could argue it is just a scrap of paper (like a napkin or a SF Weekly) but I don't know. . . it just seems off. Not that I throw business cards away when people give them to me, I just wonder what kind of job/life they have where they have business cards anyway. It seems so serious and adult and real world-ish.

Alex in SF, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I kind of meant to get a girl's number today but ended up giving her my business card instead.

However, my business card = not pretentious and cold since my business = drums!

Jordan, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Drums are NOT a serious profession young man! Hahaha.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
I think this method of pulling should definitely come back into vogue.

Once happened to me in a club - I was texting a mate and this girl snatched my phone out my hands, stuck in her number (lightning fast speed, I barely knew it had gone) and gave it back.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god that number I posted up thread still works.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

When I first met the person who is now my girlfriend, a friend of mine was telling her about his blog. I – er – played it cool by writing the blog's url on a 'random' scrap of paper which just happened to be my business card. It worked!

beanz (beanz), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Despite my acute embarrassment at having employed such a seedy tactic.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I was going to start a new thread but last night I got:

"HI, WHOSE NUMBER IS THIS?"

I got this message at 1:30am last night. After a bit of text ping pong it turns out to be a girl who lives in my town and went travelling for a year, came back and found a bunch of numbers in her little black book. She texted me her photo. I do not recognise her, nor do I remember ever actually meeting a sophie who went away for a year.

Has anything like this ever happened to you?

(oh yeh, and before you ask, yes she's hot).

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Sunday, 8 January 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

and no, it's not the girl from the club - that happened in colchester.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Sunday, 8 January 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

I've been to Colchester!

You should take this girl to Colchester, the disused watertower is totally amazing.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 8 January 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

colchester is a dump. i lived there for three years and returned for an alumni meeting at christmas and man, it was dumpcakes. i had fun when i lived there though, but i do remember regularly sleeping in till 3pm - not just through laziness but also to block bloody colchester out.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Monday, 9 January 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

I just wonder what kind of job/life they have where they have business cards anyway.

Erm, isn't that the point of business cards!?
