My 15 Perfect Songs......shit, everyone else done did it...

But I'm keeping mine limited to spring/summer cruise jams.....this shit is a science, I mean it......years of experience have taught me the crucial elements to a car jam.....universality, usually a good bass groove......a certain confusing degree of feel-good sexy "slickness" (shit is abstract.....it disqualifies a certain type of (whiny) guitar rock yet allows certain strains.....it can be aggro and militaristic "toughness" (eg: dirty south rap, cock rock) or just clean and pretty (poppy stuff like Janet) but it must have this strange element of tilted-back, girl-pleasing "cool" to it....dorky shit like Nickelback and nu-metal is nixed, obviouisly).........I will start an ILM thread on this tomorrow......indiefied 'cultural detective' music writers consistently ignore the car jam phenomenon......this shit dictates and represents more that you'd ever imagine in the US and it's somehow unanimous yet unspoken at the same time.......it positively dwarfs indie-ish shit (I know hardly anyone that can associate sex with Dashboard Confessional and Blink, Raposa, and I'm a youngster.....that era is over.....kids by and large court, grind, and fuck to synthetics now (aside from those 5 gross girls outside Hot Topic).....understanding how car jams work means understanding a huge (non-geto) aspect of rap, why trip hop made a lot of total losers happy, the dorky phenomenons called " the ambulance effect", "laps", "the covert rewind", etc)..........anyways:

Fresh Prince - Summertime. Beatnuts - Watch Out Now. The Sundays - Summertime. Francoise Hardy - Tout Les Garcons Et Filles. Lost Boyz - Niggaz Don't Want it. Le Tigre - Hot Topic. Jay Z - Snoopy Track. G & R - Rocket Queen. Big Pun - Punish Me. Aqua - Candyman. Wu Tang & No Limit - Who Rock This? (not a lot of people know this song.....it was on the "I Got The Hook Up!" soundtrack, maybe thats why....shit, I loved that movie.....this song is out-fucking-rageous, ODB and Mystikal just off the chain, back and forth......yo Tom and ethan, I think you'd like this.....sorry for patronizing you if you already know it). The Pixies - Lovely Day. Janet Jackson - Escapade. Randy Crawford - Street Life. Nas & AZ - Life's A Bitch (ARSENAL REMIX).....(important: it must be the remix......shit is hotter than the bowels of satan, just sooooo styling.....it's been in my summer playlist for years now.....typifies my generation's love affair with some nicely placed strings).

Shit, it goes like......
And let me explain the "covert rewind".....haha, the shit amuses me still....it's some 10th grade shit for real.....you're listening to a song and there's this really bad ass part or lyric.....you keep rewinding because it sounds good......and also because you want the girls on the sidewalk or in the car youre creeping up on to hear it right when they see you......so you rewind frantically right to the part, trying to time the pull-up correctly.....in my hood getting busted doing a C-R was a pretty big party foul......just last weekend my friend Toby was driving and I was sitting shottie and we took turns doing C-R with the last track on the MC Paul Barman EP with the line, "WHEN I BURST IN YOUR FACE, I INVADE YOUR PERSONAL SPACE!!!"....good times.

Um, yes, regarding that Sundays song.....there is a lyric of particular concern to me, yes.....and I quote...."it's you and me....in the summertime.....gonna turn my white skin red."......do you, um, care to explain this.....I have a panel ready to discuss this, yes, and we will take action!

Al Sharpton, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

watch out now is not a choice of the true connoisseur.

ethan, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh no! Ethan Vs. Ramosi Beatnuts FITE! OH NO!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

C-R's are a litter easier to pull off in the winter because you can quickly bring your hand up to the A/C vents and make it look like you just adjusted the heat.....but everyone's got their windows rolled up so what's the point right?

Ethan, fine, it's not their strongest jam.......I just find it perfectly paced and loopable for car jam purposes.....what's your pick? I'm betting I know what it is.

A thing about car jams.....you got to be careful about self- referentiality or you will look corny......example: Morrissey "Boy Racer"......you'd think it's the perfect driving track but that "BOY RACER.....BOY RACER!!!!.......he's just TOO GOOD LOOKING" part......that's some flamer ass shit to people in traffic that dont know the context, they will laugh at you....

Here are some others I left out because I didn't think most would know them........

Delinquent Habits - Return Of The Tres.

DJ Honda featuring Grand Puba & Sadat X - Straight Talk From NY (*the ultimate*, I think....I can't believe I left it off).

FatLip - Goldmine.

24K - Don't Go There.

Lolita Storm - Red Hot Riding Hood.

Big L - Flamboyant.

Thread revival fun here. Is this Ramosi's nemesis?

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

he sure was a hard ass gangsta with his le tigre pick

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not even Le Tigre's best song, for god's sake, that's kind of an unfortunate slide in on his part, you know? Everyone makes a couple mistakes, even thug ass bastards like Ramosi.

"best song"

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

was he more of a thug ass bastard when he did his side by side pixies/smiths comparsion thread?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"frankly mr. shankly i'm gonna have to pull out the ratchet and aerate you."

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I admit, there were some holes in his persona.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Best Pixies song has got to be... Gigantic. Or Bone Machine. I don't know. Not Lovely Day.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I dunno, to be honest Ramosi was completely wrong in everything he said, he just said it real convincingly and shit?? I haven't had any coffee yet today you know?

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ally it just made him more real, the conflict.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, yes, regarding that Sundays song.....there is a lyric of particular concern to me, yes.....and I quote...."it's you and me....in the summertime.....gonna turn my white skin red."......do you, um, care to explain this.....I have a panel ready to discuss this, yes, and we will take action!

that's about sunburn isn't it? It's strange to sing along to it being chinese though. turn my yellow skin brown has too many syllables.

ken c, Friday, 12 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the juxtaposition of jess's point about conflict and the whole thing about the Sundays, that's pretty streets.
