mark s, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have just missed it. however i will watch it next week cos if yr description is accurate it will clearly be the best thing ever ever ever.

toby, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is great. It's basically Geeks vs Cheerleaders FITE, but the main cheerleader is a compassionate human at heart, unlike all the others. Go figure. And head honcho geek = sister of head honcho cheerleader. But all the 'geeks' are GREAT lookin' - surely can't be geeks? Dunno what else to say mark, but your love of crap TV programs (just saw yr As If comment on the ILM Glam thread) just makes my heart melt.

Note to self: that sentence was too Emo.

david h, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I much preferred "Freaks and Geeks." Does that make me indie? "Popular" should be called "Blondes vs Brunettes."

bnw, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't believe f&g has been shown in the uk

mark s, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen about 20 minutes of POPULAR in total.......I don't have time for teen shows......Carly Pope is spectacular though......I would not neglect her one iota......"yo boo.....yo boo.....check out this artwork I made for you......I was washing and waxing your car......now check this out....on the left side I glued raw macaroni into a No Limit tank formation.....on the right side I scraped in Kobe Bryant's visage with my keys......what?.....well fuck you then, byatch!.....I loved you so much I was just trying to "toy with viewer expectation"......I got this new crew....they called "ILE"

Ramosi, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you'll get over it. there are hot lead actresses, that's about it. After a few episodes you realize that Gilmore Girls suX too. I have one weakness for soap opera tv dramas and that is Felicity. guilty pleasure. but as far as popular, i think the basic idea was that the blond rules her clique, the brun rules hers, and their parents end up a couple so they are all a big family. teen angst ensues, insert various secondary characters for comedic relief, add commercials for neutrogena clear face scrub and 3d doritos, and viola!

Ron, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah popular ain't so flash, f&g is better. but yeah i used to watch it to perve, mostly at the cheerleader with the short blond hair and the supposedly fat girl. BEWARE: one of the geek boys is in actuality the SON OF TOM HANKS. ughhh.

di, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought sonfofTomHanks was In "Roswell."

bnw, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the basic idea": i refer you to my earlier review

mark s, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark I am too dumb to understand your earlier "review" :-)

Ron, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they look like the same person to me.

di, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I aint much at yer fancy book learnin'

Ron, Saturday, 13 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Freaks And Geeks was shown in the UK, if you have the right satellite/digital/cable channel - I think it was on E4. They seemed to get through the whole series in about a fortnight, on every night, so I guess it was over before any word-of-mouth could get going. I only caught a couple, but I thought it was really excellent, and I hope it gets a terrestrial showing some time soon.

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes F&G is on E4. Its nothing like popular though is it? I love the way the not popular crowd in popular are still drop dead gorgeous!

Alan at his ancestral home, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but that's what's so CLEVER about it: it's the same in Roswell High

mark s, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As If = roXor (I haf the soundtrack CD hurrah, though it doesn't have the good stuff).

F&G = the ten seconds I saw was great

Popular = Probablt grate, but never seen much of it.

Graham, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After a few episodes you realize that Gilmore Girls suX too

Bah! The great tension in my lift comes from the fact that Buffy and Gilmore Girls are on at the same time. What to do?

The answer is obviously "Watch Buffy" but it still sucks.

adam, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

blimey you watch tv in A LIFT!! that is rad...

mark s, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

btw the thing that bothers me about gilmore girls is the way the dialog is acted out. try listening to the sound of an exchange on the show without paying attention to the content: its just a back and forth of one liners, each actor waiting to start until the last has come to a halt. its very annoying and betrays the bad quality of the acting IMO. people do not talk this way, trading endless strings of witticisms.

But im being too picky, i can understand why people like it. The chef-lady-friend (Sookie? or something like that) is a fun character

Ron, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No no no it is too easy to say that it is 'cheerleaders vs geeks', it's three! totally arbitary when you come to think of it GROUPS whose social divisions were decided way back in high school but the movment between groups is far more fluid than a cheerleader/geek thing. Ie Willow vs Cordelia - Cordy STILL always looks down on the Slayerettes but Sam and Brooke, Carmen and Poppy, Mary Cherry and Harrison all mix. It's the Blondes vs Brunettes vs the Red Haired Stepchildren (no idea who said that in the first place) which makes it so much MORE than freak/geek FITE! I mean, Mary Cherry is obv much more of a freak than Carmen or Lilly. She has a nevah ending bag which everything in it for crying out loud!

Of course I do mostly feel sorry for the meng in Popular, specially poor Josh who is such a lovely chap but Brooke is so NEUROTIC (eating disorder/parents issue/first time BONKING issues) she's screwed him up. And if she wouldn't have done that ANYWAY then you have SAM with her annoying hair and her 'investigative journalism' ie STIRRING arrgh! More screen time on Sam = less screen time for Mary Cherry and Nicole = -------------------------------------!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you see the one where MC and Nicole and Sugar Daddy tried to kidnap Gwyneth Paltrows personal shopper?! ARF!

oh my god you guys brookes got a bong, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa, I didn't even think about it, sorry. Yeh, you're right, now gimme me the gun. Give... me... the... gun...

david h, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron just put into words perfectly why I don't watch teen shows that try to be smart or mature......that dialogue shit is just so stilted and unnatural it's like......it's like you know the writers were total sideliners when they were teens and now they're trying to recast that shit with these little fantasy bastards that talk like that corny bitch Dave Eggers.....this is why I give shit like Popular and Buffy and Clueless a chance and give GG and Dawsons the immaculate bozack.

Ramosi, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah & what else was better : Grosse Point, what happened to that. did you ever get that in the UK?

, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
'investigative journalism' = 'stirring' ?? !!

Tim Bateman, Friday, 13 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Can someone take me slowly through yesterday's episode, preferably with flowcharts and diagrams. I missed the first two minutes and had been up until 5am watching Learning Zone mental arithmetic for 10 year olds, but God it was complicated, in a good way.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 8 December 2002 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

THIS WASN'T RHETORICAL

Graham (graham), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim - yes, the way Spam McPherson does it. GOT A PROBLEM?

And Popular wasn't on yesterday. If you are talking about Sky TV then take it some kind of "we've all got sky" forum. Chiz.

Unless it WAS on yesterday and I MISSED IT in which case I deserve to be flogged.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It was on yesterday when I posted that yesterday, fule. Saturday, five, 1pm, John Travolta club, etc.

Graham (graham), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Cockfarming Channel 5. I missed it. What happened in it, I might be able to clarify.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know any of their names, I've only seen a couple of episodes before. But they shut down the Glamazons and the John Travolta club, and the one with the short ginger hair went to prison, and Brook got in trouble for dating a college guy, and everyoen was backstabbing everyone else and none of it made much sense so I should just shut up now.

Graham (graham), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah I think you mean this one. Try reading the recap from MBTV, sorry, TWOP, sorry...

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Sarah, yes that one. I'd already found it in another episode guide but I like your link much better.
