I was sitting in a room with some friends, and I realized that I was the only one who wasn't initiated with this guy. Everybody was going off about Invader Zim this and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac that.... so I looked some of his stuff up and I probably like it more than I desire to (it seems like something I'm obviously supposed to like ---> I naturally resist).

Are his comics/cartoons the work of a brilliant visionary or some obnoxious cynic?

Somewhere in the middle. His non-Johnny work (cf. the charming, sloppy 1-page strips inbetween JTHM chapters) is much better than his JTHM work.

JTHM kind of gets boring near the middle, but at the end it picks up and the story gets very interesting. Invader Zim is one of the best shows on television currently that is sadly on the completely wrong network (Nickelodeon, when it would get the viewership it deserves on Cartoon Network in Adult Swim). Jhonen hasn't done much past that I think, but classic for Zim alone.

Forget JMTM and Invader Zim. The real action is in the "Squee!" miniseries and the the first issue of "I Feel Sick"

Dud for Zim and the legion of Zim and Johnny fans that litter the 'net (whiny goth girls one and all) - but Classic for Squee and for "I Feel Sick", which is a neat story on the frustrations of writers/artists block and should have been made into an animated short (instead of him doing Zim). Devi is a fond favourite cartoon character of mine.

I like Jhonen's humour a lot. I prefer Roman Dirge though. And if I hear one more person speak in Gir-squeaky "I saw squirrel!" voice, I will kill them by stuffing teddybears down their throat with a broomhandle.
