Mike Hanley sez he avoids movies with Julia Roberts. Me anything with Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise is poison,. Hell in MI2 I was so sick when Dougray Scott got killed and Tom didn't. What about you?

Billy Dods, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aw, c'mon, Julia Roberts isn't so bad; I could even write an essay depicting her as a modern-day Audrey Hepburn (ok, I'm just saying I COULD write such an essay).

I wouldn NEVER watch a film that Billy Crystal had any involvement with (yes, I know Julia Roberts is in his new one).

Sean, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robin Williams. George Clooney. Jennifer Jason Leigh.

I'm sure I'll think of more.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One time at Good World cafe Courtney Love came in, so we left.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Once, I was buying crack on the south side, and D'Arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins came by, so I . . . oh, nevermind.

Seriously, though, I don't think I'd go anywhere in Chicago associated with either Billy Corgan or Dennis Rodman. I'll stick to the local joints, where I keep seeing Sally Timms . . .

And yeah, I know the question's art related, but it's fun to think about real-life encounters as well.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whenever Thurston Moore shows up at a show or party I'm at, I leave immediately. Unless he's with Kim, in which case I tend to "accidentally" spill beer on her before exiting.

I can't really imagine any scenarios in which I would see a Tom Hanks movie. Or anything with Vincent Gallo.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How could I have forgotten Tom Hanks? Can't think of a recent film of his I'd waste a dime on.

Since I work in Manhattan -- and on Fifth Avenue, to boot -- apparently I cross paths with famous people all the time. But I'm also apparently totally oblivious to such people. For instance, when coming back from lunch with a former co-worker, we apparently passed a sitcom star and it had to be splained to me who this person was and what they were famous for. Likewise when my former firm represented Seinfeld's girlfriend. I'm quite proud of my ignorance of the beautiful people, to be quite honest.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will kill myself before i see a Tom Hanks movie . Robert Deniro was on the list before i saw the score. ( i made an exception for Taxi Driver because i will watch ANYTHING with jodie foster.)

anthony, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thurston Moore was wandering around my workplace once and me and JObn treid to force one of my demos into his boney hands but he had left already/ . Ialso hate Steve Martin these days, Chevy CHase, Billy ickface Crystal, whoopie goldberg, blink 182, rosey oshitheaddonnel, oprah,

Mike Hanley, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cameron diaz nauseates me so much i refused to see charlies angels. not that i could have afforded to see it anyway.

lady die, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Hanks was good up till (and including) The Money Pit. And I watched about 5 minutes of Joe vs. the Volcano on TV the other day. Mel Gibson is ridiculously insufferable these days.

Kris, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Hanks was good up until Bosom Buddies or whatever sitcom it was that he appeared on...

I avoid Jim Carrey.

youn, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rule Number One: Avoid films starring Scientologists...covers a multitude of crimes against cinema. L Ron's spawn can suck my left one. Official.

suzy, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

will not go to see a film starring goldie hawn, steve martin, whoopie goldberg, patrick swayzee, robin williams, julia roberts, steven segal, jim carey, tom hanks, john candy, hugh lawrie, billy crystal, cher, danny devito, eddie murphy, jean-claude van damme, hugh grant, steve guttenberg, eric idle or emma thompson. don't go to the cinema much.

kevan, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i thought that i would never see a film with michael douglas or catherine zeta jones in. then i went to see one with *both* of them in. but 'traffic' wasnt that bad.........nopt that i'll see anything else with either of them in again.

ambrose, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sirius, man. That dog star is a major fucking bitch.

Kate the Saint, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Adam Sandler. Billy Crystal. And Hanks - because he stole Steve Guttenberg's career (I don't mind Hanks up until he stole Guttenberg's career - The Money Pit, Volunteers are perfectly fine movies).

And the big daddy of them all Denzel Washington. I would avoid films with the appalling Julianne Moore in them but she keeps rocking up in films that I otherwise quite fancy seeing (stuff like Magnolia). She is always rubbish in them though.

Pete, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's only one actor I avoid and his name is Carrey.

Madchen, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey man, Drew Carrey is a funny guy!

berbis, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Julia Roberts, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas.

But especially Julia Roberts. She's unbearable.

Nicole, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Simon Callow. Twunt, twunt, twunt, twunt, twunt.

Jonnie, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Left WHAT Suzy?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ewan McGregor. What a body of work - 'This Year's Love', 'Velvet Goldmine', 'Rogue Trader', 'A life Less Ordinary', 'Phantom Menace'. Jesus wept.

dave q, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robin Williams. One of my favourite moments in a movie was in Cecil B. Demented when they attacked a movie theater for playing Patch Adams II...

He was good in The Fisher King, though, but I guess Terry Gilliam saved him there.

Paul Strange, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HA! actually it was the directors cut of patch adams. I too am glad they took aim at that crud. I hate overly sentimanetl a films

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me too - they *really* make me cringe. Just can't watch that sort of thing, to be honest, unless it's done so badly it's funny.

Paul Strange, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anything with a scientologist, gay or otherwise, sandra bullock, nicole lidman, meg ryan, tom hanks, mel gibosn, eddie murphy, bruce willis etfuckingcetera

Geoff, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is no one I actively avoid, actually. I'll watch anything, with anyone in it, and rag on it the entire time.

I also wouldn't leave anywhere if a celebrity showed up, but I'd do my damnedest to annoy a celebrity I hated.

Ally, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tart

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now what is tarty about not leaving parties?

Ally, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Any film with Mel Gibson as well, Richard Gere or Emma Thompson.

JEL, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Minnie Driver. Or Minivan Driver as we call her around the office. Winona Ryder-no no no. Driver and Ryder-gotta go. Haley Joel Osment & Hallie Kate Eisenberg-kill them please, thanks. Joey Lauren Adams-that screechy-voiced lopsided-grin cutesiness is nauseating. Edward Norton-the rabbi/priest film just ruined him for me. Kenneth Branagh-who wants to look at that? And Kevin Spacey has always bugged me, he's just not that good.

Agree w/ Ambrose about MD & CZJ/"Traffic"

Arthur, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Nathan Lane=the gay Robin Williams. I still wanna see The Producers, though.

Arthur, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's with mini drivers jaw! Its huge! she looks freakish!

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I try to avoid Tom Hanks. Sam Neill leapt onto my list after the cockfarming "Merlin" miniseries and "Event Horizon".

Dan Perry, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i detest julia roberts. glad to see im not alone there. angelina jolie is on the top of my most hated list right now, shes an extremely overrated hack and she makes me want to vomit. meryl streep is another. i dont go for that melodramatic crap she passes off as "acting".

amy, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kevan's list is basically the same as mine, but I'll put in a special mention for Tom Cruise. I can't stand him or any film he's been in.

DG, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you need to see 'the burbs'.

ethan, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Helen Hunt plays the same damn character in every movie. Also annyoing as hell: Sinbad!

And I avoid any movie that features animals playing sports.

bnw, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can someone help me - what was the Mel Gibson film where he plays the simple, hardworking family man who gets pushed to the brink by villains and gets revenge in an orgy of violence - you know the one, what the hell was it?

dave q, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sounds like michael douglas in Falling Down.

Geoff, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, really. but you might be thinking of 'ransom'. (lili taylor, WHY?)

ethan, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's funny, sometimes I think a comedian is funny at times but generally think of them as despicable. Sandler and Jim Carrey are two good examples; I think they did some good work on TV, Sat Night Live and In Living Color respectively, but on the big screen they seem to produce junk. I've enjoyed Robin Williams at times but, yeah, stuff like Patch Adams or Jack (directed by...Francis Coppola???) looks so bad I just want to burn the negatives, sight unseen.

Chris, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
Hmmmmm i avoid movies with goldie hawn, julia roberts, ben stiller, shaq, george clooney, sigourney weaver, and alll the sukey actors

Dillon nea, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
