The new hit TV show with the talking baby, I mean.

Didn't the talking-baby gimmick die with the last Look Who's Talking movie?

Michael Daddino, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Theory: the talking-baby movie/TV show is popular with its target audience (parents -- actual and wannabe) because the talking baby is an ideal child in three important ways. On one level, the talking baby is a genius and hence is special; on another important level, as comfortingly banal as its parents; and one yet another level, just as cuuuute as any other baby.

I think you just inadvertantly supported a lot of Momus' recent points.

Does Baby Bob have a bad back?

Ned, that hurt. Deep inside. sniffle.

I do apologize -- but I did say 'inadvertantly.' ;-)

Q: What percent of talking babies are cannon fodder? Or are they already becoming, in some Momusian sense? A: 95% of babies, even talking ones, are becoming cannon fodder. And yet sitcoms never seem to address this!

Can you tell I have Post Traumatic Thread disorder (servicemark)?

i was under the impression that this program was a tremendous failure...now it's called a hit?

heads will roll...normal heads..

I've heard it described as "an unexpected hit" -- though I bet that everyone involved with the show just assumed it would just be another soon-to-be-axed midseason replacement show, and that they're horrified that it's been showing staying power.

Fills the yawning gap in the teevee market left since the cancellation of "My Mother the Car".
