How Much 9/11 Hoopla Is Too Much?

Alright, now don't get me wrong--I understand the significance of the day, I remember being terrified and sad when it happened, and of course we should remember it.

However, when not one but TWO people who work for a company criticize their company because they didn't fly their flags at half mast this year or send a company wide email recognizing 9/11...I begin to wonder how much is too much.

Is it really necessary to send a "OMG we shall never forget" email EVERY YEAR after 9/11? It's been seven years. I don't think any of us are soon to forget it and I don't see why people get up in arms when you're not all "flag waving" every 9/11.

I mean, on the anniversary of 9/11, this guy once posted on a message board indicating a local television network was planning to add the made for TV version of "The Music Man" three days before 9/11, and because of that was distasteful. (Not only was that not true, but the only thing that was distasteful was the movie itself because it sucked balls).

So...

I've found it's impossible to reason with SUPEROMGPATRIOTIC people, so I just stand back and let them have their fun.

Sept. 13: Never Forget

1971 A four-day inmates' rebellion at the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York ended as police and guards stormed the prison; the ordeal and final assault claimed 43 lives.

1999 An explosion devastated an eight-story apartment building in Moscow, killing at least 118 people.

1996 Rapper Tupac Shakur died at a Las Vegas hospital six days after he was wounded in a drive-by shooting; he was 25.

Dang, I always forget Tupac was only 25.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

dude, I feel like going out decorated with an American flag and a Tupac shirt right now....

Dang, I always forget Tupac was only 25.

Yea, his face was kinda old looking like Greg Oden.

FWIW I think the word "hoopla" is probably not the precise one you want here

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

hysteria I guess.

Officer, I Just Shot Seven People (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

i was in mid-belch while typing the title and it scrambled my brain

This will be used to justify every war until at least 2050, so get used to it.

Soukesian, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'd never heard the Flight 93 recordings and they played them on Coast to Coast Thursday night. Broke my fucking heart.

I thought a lot of the 'never forget' stuff tapered off dramatically around 2004-2005. No candlelight vigils, announcements, 'Never Forget,' anything. Not anywhere I've lived (rural Idaho, populated Idaho, and New Mexico).

Just think, JFK getting shot is a big deal to our parents, D-Day for our grandparents. I can't name the day of either, and I don't think too many people my age can unless they're history lovers. September 11 will not mean anything to the next generation's kids, or grandkids...

Abbott, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

Where do you live, Bo Jackson, and what was the workplace?

Abbott, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

Also I like "The Music Man"!

Abbott, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Nov. 23, June 6. But I'm not your age and could arguably be considered a history lover.

also, Soukesian speaks true.

Some damn thing (Oilyrags), Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

My husband and I were trying to figure out the dates of each last night...I knew JFK assassination was in November, but not the date, and I guess we were furiously wrong on D-Day, which we thought might have been in December. Some hot day in Hawaii, I'll bet.

Uhhhh . . . waht?

Phil D. (Pancakes Hackman), Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

yeah!

Abbott, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

Try a man-on-the-street type informal survey.

Abbott, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

I understand the SIGNIFICANCE and IMPORT of JFK and D-Day, but not the details of D-Day, or the dates of either.

I guess most people will remember when the recent WTC terrorist plane attacks occurred because they're always called "September Eleventh."

Abbott, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Whereas Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7) was known by its locale, not date.

Aimless, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

I live in Florida--to be fair, it shouldn't be a surprise, because the office environment is very "conservative" to begin with, not to mention...well, FL.

As far as the Music Man, I wasn't so much bashing that musical as much as the Matthew Broderick version :)

Officer, I Just Shot Seven People (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

JFK was shot on November 22. It was a Friday.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 14 September 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

Why compare to D-Day when you have Pearl Harbor?

html tsar (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Sunday, 14 September 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

I SEE plenty of that 911 shit around the burbs, bt people actually died in there from thems crazy towers. I don't know why the rest of the country gives a rat's ass.

I think the "details" of D-Day have been kept alive too, depending on what's meant by details - I mean, Saving Private Ryan, right?

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 14 September 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

saving private ryan much?

s1ocki, Sunday, 14 September 2008 05:16 (seventeen years ago)

Quit trying to make "Saving Private Ryan" happen.

Ahmadinejad Calls 9/11 ‘A Big Fabrication’

velko, Saturday, 6 March 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

just read that. even at my most cynical I doubt I could believe our gov't had anything to do with 9/11, nor that we embellished as much as he says, but he's right that the USA used it as an excuse to do shitty things. but that's as 'shocking' a revelation as being told Flava Flav likes titties...
