cuz i dont think there is one already. is this the best movie ever or what?

i'm prompted to start this thread cuz i just saw SOUL POWER, a new doc cut together from leftover WWK footage by one of the original editors. it focuses on the music fest that preceded the bout... performances by james brown, bill withers, celia cruz...

it's like WWK 2! not as great but a pretty awesome and unexpected surprise.

Ali was such a compelling figure. It's hard to think of anyone else from sports who ever bestrode our little world like such a colossus. I love the man. He was voted the Sportsman of the Century in 1999. Given all that, how could you make a bad documentary about him?

Aimless, Sunday, 9 November 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

I love this film so much! I saw it last week and it really inspired me, I think about it every day. It's like the film version of the art of war - I'm gonna DANCE

Love this movie. And especially love Mailer's commentary here: on how Ali drove Foreman wild with his right hand leads in the early rounds; on Foreman himself (watching him hit the heavy bag was one of the most "prodigious sights" in Mailer's life).

collardio gelatinous, Sunday, 9 November 2008 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

i need to see this again.

Booker van Permalink (Hunt3r), Sunday, 9 November 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Mailer's amazing. Poo poo poo!

Man. I don't even like boxing--like, at all--and "When We Were Kings" is one of my very favorite movies ever.

Now I need to see if I can find "Soul Power" somewhere!

Douglas, Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

will be out soon enough!

s1ocki, Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I saw WWK at Radio City Music Hall, and Ali came onstage at the end. I cried.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

o man i would cry too... that's awesome

s1ocki, Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

Matos and others have and say it's the greatest such film ever. I have no reason to doubt it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

its amazing. only problem is too short, wanted more JB. wanted more everybody.

1p3 freely (s1ocki), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

there's a bootleg of james brown live in zaire '74 that's something else. there's a never-otherwise-recorded jam called zaire soul which is like my favourite james brown song.

miriam makeba's in this, right?

the heart is a lonely hamster (schlump), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

man, I saw WWWKs at the theater when it was first released (late 90's?). It was a matinee and I was the only one in the place. I couldn't believe how great it was. I bugged everybody I knew about it for months.

Daniel Baboon (brownie), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 24 February 2020 16:52 (six years ago)

it's... bad

Generous Grant for Stepladder Creamery (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 24 February 2020 16:58 (six years ago)

George Foreman told director Leon Gast, "Every time I watch this, I think I'm going to win the fight."

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Monday, 24 February 2020 16:59 (six years ago)

five months pass...

rewatched WWWK...Ali shoulda taken home a Best Actor trophy

also the overwhelming impression I get from the supplements is that not only could anyone with a camera have made a spectacular movie from this material, it's actually not that hard for me to imagine a better movie made from this material. their first instinct was for the music journalist to be the central character?!?!

will dig into Soul Power later
