voted romanian (closest to romany?), in spirit of apology to Noodle Vague for being a dickwad on the football thread last year.

great poll.

darraghmac, Monday, 15 September 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

Only listed immigrant communities that a) have their own wikipedia page b) I've met enough of to consider a proper "community".

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

Would have listed every single West Indian community but too much effort tbh. Do let us know if you've voting for Antigua or St Kitts and Nevis though.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

sadly "american" will win this poll in a walk

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

even though they don't actually have a "community"

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

Torn between Indian for the food and West Indian for the music. All listed have made many fine contributions to the cultural and social fabric our rapidly changing island, though (get-out Guardian-reading proviso).

chap, Monday, 15 September 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

cm'off it looey. the irish will smash this poll. possibly in a drunken rage

American ex-pat community easily the most self-loathing, ashamed of their heritage, pretending to be Canadian people on the planet though, so US interlopers onto this thread may want to think twice before voting for those traitors.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

Worst one probably a tie between UAE/Saud and Australia (mostly for Chris Roy Taylor mind)

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

Australian or Spanish in a clash for worst imo.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

dom otm about american self-hate

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

I have never met a Ghanaian I haven't liked. For some strange reason these have mostly been in High Street pubs on a Saturday afternoon while they shout enthusiastically at Man Utd games.

Matt DC, Monday, 15 September 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

i have a lot of love for the rotating cast of Portuguese and Brazilians who linger in Finsbury Park waiting for a game of footie. always nice blokes. if it's just one guy he's a stereotypical showboating genius; if it's two guys, one of them is brilliant and the other one is terrible.

1982 World Cup wall chart (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

haha they tend to pop up in any major city, sometimes if there are two they are both amazing, generally the terrible spacker (who everyone seems to love dearly, probably because his goalkeeping is conducive to goals) crops up in groups of 4 or more wandering football troubadours.

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

this exact thing happens in my hick town, but with nigerian guys instead. usually the same guys- a wizard in his late thirties or so and his teenage son, who's sadly cack but tries hard.

darraghmac, Monday, 15 September 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

west indies ftw

Death Pragmatic (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

tbh they tend to be anything from nigerians to italians to germans to dutch to latvians to west indians, all that matters is that they look really seedy, they're wearing a tattered footy shirt and they're exceptionally skillful

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

but can they play together in a 4-4-2?

darraghmac, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

nah, but given a bit of guidance they could play a...

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

How come there's no Anglo-Saxon, Danish, or Norman on this list?

Michael White, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

they do have a strong cultural identity, those Normans. i wonder sometimes if they shouldn't do more to integrate themselves with the broader population.

1982 World Cup wall chart (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

gabbneb, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

well if you will hog them

Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

Can you vote for a community that you're connected to by family? Or is that cheating/skewing the results?

snoball, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

i'm voting for my Baltic peoples, you do whatever your conscience tells you.

celebrated pop troubadour Stefan Dennis (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

Feel free.

Matt's right about Ghanaians, but I think my vote's gonna go for the Kosovans.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Kosovars, surely

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

snoball, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Slightly naive in their defending though.

Matt DC, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

dom using the pre-emptive "whoops my mouse slipped" excuse for voting italy

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

Japanese, because I married one.

Matt #2, Monday, 15 September 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

i married an American, but i didn't hover over that option in the poll for long.

where is Dom meeting all of these people? at a stretch i've met people from half the groups in the list. is this a take-away food thing?

celebrated pop troubadour Stefan Dennis (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 15 September 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Via the magic of the internet.

Neil S, Monday, 15 September 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Indian for food and "some of my best friends are..." reasons but Pakistani was a close second for the very same reason.

Where are Serbians vote?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

(and don't say Serbia)

I've lived in the Midlands, Lancashire, and London, so, y'know. Wide and varied.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

Of the ones I've encountered, all good, even South Africans!

i have a shiny 50p coin says you haven't met people of every group on that list. you're a fraud and a disgrace, and i can't sit by wordlessly anymore.

i have also lived in all of those places. coincidence? if you move to Boston i'm having you arrested.

Australian or Spanish in a clash for worst imo.

There's no fucking contest, surely? Look, my cousin is doing "the year in London" and she's driving me fucking insane with all her idiotic Facebook updates about life with as an Australian being drunkenly irritating in London.

And no, I'm not giving you her number.

Assault! Assault! (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

even South Africans!

Every South African I've known in this country has been thoroughly charming and politically sound.

chap, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

Absolutely

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

that's not my experience. i worked for several years with three S. Africans, one of whom is probably the nicest guy i have ever met and the other two of whom were pretty despicable human beings. i have a long story involving a fake charity raffle but i will spare you from that here.

i'm not condemning the rest of the South African people on that basis, i'm just saying that they're down 1-3 in my score book (automatic -1 for their sportsmen).

Most of the racists really go to Perth or Sydney.

Assault! Assault! (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

Surely 'nicest guy I've ever met' is worth more than +1.

I actually felt a bit guilty after voting, because I voted Polish, even though by blood I'm more Irish. But this result suits me very well.

snoball, Monday, 22 September 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

on behalf of all Irish people everywhere I would to wish you all a hearty and heartfelt thank you, from the bottom of our emerald hearts....god bless.

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 22 September 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

Who would you have voted for?

snoball, Monday, 22 September 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

my neighbour Seamus O'Krzynówek will be thrilled.

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2008 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

Well it was either cop-out home banker Cypriot or ah something else. Hmm.
