Sarah and Alix and I are moving to a house in Oval hooray. Apparently it has broadband, a breakfast bar, 70s decor and a MYSTERIOUS CELLAR. It will be great. There will be a housewarming party of course and it will not feature Buffy fancy dress either.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah seemed quite keen on having a piñata at this party though.

Emma, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HIP HIP HOORAY for the magical moving day!! RickyT got ABSURDLY excited when he heard about the breakfast bar last night. he said "You can eat your cornflakes SITTING DOWN!!" i however am much more excited about the MYSTERIOUS CELLAR. when are you moving in Tom, whenwhenwhenwhenwhenwhen????

katie, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

glad you got yourselves sorted! back in london hey?

gareth, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am planning on moving in the bank holiday weekend - depends on a few financial things though.

I ate my cornflakes (well coco pops, num num brown milk) this morning sitting down at a TABLE therefore I agree that the cellar beats the breakfast bar hands down.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought you'd gone all glitchcore on us Tom...

Sarf of the river is great, and don't let any mentalists tell you different...

Andrew L, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew L — do you like Hitler?

mark s, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S exposed as geographical 'gatekeeper'...

Andrew L, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lovely! Glad you're all sorted.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The mathematically minded will always prefer ellipse.

Or are ovals two semi-circles with a rectangle in the middle.

Congratulations anyway.

Pete, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am just jealous of the broadband availability: besides, some of my best friends are south londoners

mark s, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only that Mark but broadband will be paid for by my work!

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom – do you like the 12-foot lizards?

mark s, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some of my best friends are south londoners

That's because we have natural rhythm.

Sam, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R Trevor, I R psycho stalker.

I R Trevor, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm only stalking Alix, so I feel able to read this thread. Sarah and Tom, you have nothing to ph34r.

(it's south london that made me this way)

Mark C, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cor, Kennington! You'll be able to walk to These Records.

If any of you need any help with the move, let me know. It's not as if I own a van or anything, but I can make tea.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I read it anyway.

Graham, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mysterious cellar's are cool. Better than creepy attics.

jel --, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

does the house have a turret...as these are better than cellars and attics combined and multiplied?

jel --, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, are you moving to Gormenghast?

Sam, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have heard no reports of turrets. Because I'm in Oxford I've not actually seen the place, it might be a right shed. But I trust Starry and Alix.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But I trust Starry and Alix

WTF? You've lost your mind, Ewing! (And subsequently, your deposit).

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's worth it for a MYSTERIOUS CELLAR, Mike.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mysterious cellars are god for only one thing. BTW does the Oval fall within the borough of Lambeth?

Ed, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a breakfast bar
Why do I picture Tom with a cocktail in his hand saying "Hurray! Let us salute the new day! Let us sieze the bottle and drink it ad fundum."

nathalie, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW does the Oval fall within the borough of Lambeth?

It does. The boundary between Lambeth and Southwark runs down Kennington Park Road (Kennington tube = Southwark), then zig-zags across Kennington Park before sloshing SE down Camberwell New Road. Wandsworth borough is the other side of Vauxhall tube.

So, Tom, Starry and Lixi, unless they're employing a really loose definition of Oval, are under the governance of the Most Malevolently Useless Council in Britain. L & S know all about that already.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oi! we heard that!!

The London Borough of Hackney, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do I picture Tom with a cocktail in his hand saying "Hurray! Let us salute the new day! Let us sieze the bottle and drink it ad fundum."

Substitute "Pete" there and I think you've got it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear Mr/Ms LONDON BOROUGH OF HACKNEY,

Attached is a summons regarding non-payment of COUNCIL TAX and PARKING FEES. You are required to attend ILLEGIBLE ADDRESS at 8:30AM on LAST THURSDAY.

London Borough of Lambeth, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

grrr!

The London Borough of Hackney, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers Mike! Sorry I did not join in the fun yesterday I was off sick. The place is 70s inside as in that it looks like no-one has bothered decorating since 72. It has WOOD PANELLING (of the 70s variety) and the breakfast bar I believe is FORMICA. THe mysterious cellar we found by accident as we were walking past the stairs. I thought oh it is a little cupboard I will have a look in. After the estate agent wrestles with the door we see STAIRS!!! And a CELLAR! The estate agent mumbles about keeping wine in there but I think GAMES ROOM!!!! Problem: the stairs look VERY VERY RICKETY and rotted so they will have to be sorted first.

The 70s decor of course can be turned to our advantage. The front of the house looks out on to some stark brutalist architecture (okay a block of flats) but they are not THAT close to us so things are fine rah. It is just off Clapham Road with all its lovely facilities (well an offy and a blockbustahs at least) and every male friend apart from Tom has slavered foolishly when I tell them the area. YOu mean... NEAR THE CRICKET GROUND?!??!? Doh... moving in exact time to be confirmed as the w/e of the 27-28th it appears that at least on the 28th I will be away on a business trip (TO PRESTON HAHAHAHA).

Sarah, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well we can always move in before i.e. pay them and get keys but that's far and away the best time to move my 'shit' down.

Tom, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah it's no problem, I don't have much anyway so am hoping it would just be the job of one day, bear in mind I'm only moving about 15 minutes down the road :) (OH BUT WHAT A DIFFERENCE!)

Sarah, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you moving by BUS!!!!

Pete, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am reluctant to talk about this due to extreme superstition/ pessimism on my part. They might suddenly renege. The estate agents, I mean. Don't actually worry about this; I get very paranoid. The house is pebbledashed, I have to confess. But, not bad otherwise and jolly good for the buses and tubes. Jolly good for the tubes. Rather worried about amount of wood pannelling. I reckon a bit of white emulsion would go down well. Sarah, my mother will assist you with moving. Seeing as it is just up the road and she'll be there anyway, I'm sure she'll be happy to help. If she isn't she'll say so, in a blunt and possibly rude manner. Or just talk about quantum physics and the fact that nothing REALLY EXISTS. Mark, you are doing a really shit job of stalking me. I recommend you send disturbing letters to me and/or shin up the side of my house and live on the balcony. If you did both it would save on postage. Mike, we will require tea making skills.

alix, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
The first things that we moved in were the bottles of GIN. My head hurts today. Groo. I bought some Afro Ken wrapping paper to be a POSTER! Yay for new house!

Sarah, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never seen so much wood panelling. The breakfast bar did not disappoint either.

RickyT, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NB Sarah's head only hurts cos we were seized with a fit of playfulness and went on the waltzer in Kennington Park and NEARLY DIED, my god they never used to go that fast when I was young or even when Sarah was young which was much more recent. We are thinking of suing the fairground people.

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Waltzer operators are PSYCHO. If you are the type to scream on rides, the carnies come after you and SPIN IT MORE, grr. Found this out the hard way when Esther wore Wonderbra to funfair and managed to attract every carnie on the Heath with tits/screaming combination.

suzy, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete came over yesterday so we could try the Waltzer of death but we chickened out (i.e. never mentioned the idea again) and instead listened to Bassline FM, London's Worst Pirate Station.

Anyway we have moved in everyone! Hooray! I have no home connection yet though so no FT updates for a little while.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But come and see us do!

Tom, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does this make Tom Jack Tripper?

Nicole, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you but if I want to watch Man About The House I have Granada Plus.

N., Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What is a 'carnie' please?

Anyway the thing is the ride started fairly sedately then increased in pace to the level where it was fun and we were squealing excitedly then it all went horribly wrong and we realised that we had made a terrible mistake.

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha Sarah's head hurts because of the housewarming present of PLYMOUTH GIN, slightly different-tasting to Londong Gin but even more alcoholic hurrah! and the sushi that we ahem cobbled together did little to cushion the blow, ooh.

katie, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R suffering and Fast Acting Panadol DOES NOT DO WHOT IT SAY ON THE BOX.

Sarah, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My neck feels a bit better from the DEATH it were on Sunday, I do think it was certainly a minor case of whiplash. Good grief no wonder the poor child came off crying. I'm glad it feels better as I was seriously considering stumping up some money for a CHIROPRACTxx0r on Sunday.

Sarah, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder what they did with the brain cells they harvested from us?

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kinda like a sarnie with no bread.

jel --, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A carnie is a member of funfair workforce who travels with it, living in a dormobile and generally being about as attractive as Fred West.

suzy, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard that before. I would have said pikey but I am aware that some people think this is racialist (though I don't).

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

David Essex was a carnie in Stardust, no? My sister went to see it even tho' it was a AA and she was only 13!

Jeff W, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Abreviation of carnival (worker)?

Anna, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But a fair and a carnival are different! A fair has rides & cheap botulism ridden food and a carnival has a procession with floats & dancing (and cheap botulism ridden food).

Emma, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew about carnies from listening to too much Tom Waits.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: Jodie Foster (Carny) vs. Elvis! (Roustabout)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy, as everyone knows that screaming is the sign fdor the carnie to make it go faster: hence "Scream if you wanna go faster".

Pete, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cheap botulism ridden food

My tormentor for this weekend.

Anna, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete, *I* know that...but Esther is the sort of person who screams and stands on a chair if she sees a spider, in a very clichéd girly way. I was trying to burrow into the side of the waltzer-car so the puke wouldn't become airborne and Es was yelling 'stooooop!' to no avail. The carnie is going to spin your ass whether or not you scream, in my experience, and if you are attracting attention to your heaving bazooms he will engineer the means to have a look as often as possible (E's tits = legendary. Gareth and Ed came to a bar with me last autumn and saw her work the room so I have witnesses).

suzy, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have none of you seen Austin Powers?

(Sorry, dumb housemates watched mothing but during first months+, and listened to nothing butb MY COPY of Laid by James which fuXor has since scarpered with)

Graham, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

re: Carnies, not obv.
