I didn't include voice actors who've played Batman in the different animated series, because that's a whole different thing.

Christian Bale 10

Robert Lowery 0

I kinda hope Bale doesn't win this poll. He's a fine actor, but I don't think his Batman is that special. Plus there's that ridiculous Bat-voice!

Personally I'm having a hard time choosing between Keaton and West.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

Bump.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 September 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

I like the Nolan movies, but I don't think Christian Bale is really a great batman. That bat-growl shit is alittle too ridiculous.

Voting Keaton.

How was Clooney as Batman, I never saw that film? I thought Kilmer was quite good.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 September 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

Kilmer was my favorite Bruce Wayne, but I'm not so sure as the Bat half.

The animated series Batman voiced by Kevin Conroy is far and away the best.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 18 September 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

West without a doubt, then Keaton. I think Clooney would make a great Sci-Fi Closet/Grant Morrison Batman, but, um, I don't think they're gonna go that direction before he's REALLY old.

bale is a good wayne but not a great batman. keaton wins

akm, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

Nolan's films are the best cinematic take on the character, but necessarily because of Bale.

Gotta give it to West.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

Keaton's fucking terrible what are you guys smokin

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Bale is a GREAT Wayne and a badass Batman, in fact the only one on this list.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

he is an amazing Wayne, I agree. in the suit he's good but the voice is a bit much.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

I mean of all the films/TV episodes, the best Bruce Wayne moment out of all of them is Bale switching to "drunk" mode at the party in the Batman Begins (followed by priceless "drunken billionaire burns down mansion" shot later on in the car)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Clooney (who I like as an actor) was a fucking abomination as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. If there's one character that should never be self-knowingly smirky, it's Batman.

My friend, a die-hard Bale fan, on why me voting West was bullshit:

"he's a farce, a joke. To declare him the best batman is just the typical elitist group of indie snobs who have to knock something popular down a few pegs cause hey, it's not cool to like popular things"

Millsner, Thursday, 18 September 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

no contest

"he's a farce, a joke. To declare him the best batman is just the typical elitist group of indie snobs who have to knock something popular down a few pegs cause hey, it's not cool to like popular things"

Er, I think for a lot of people (especially people over 30) the Batman TV series was just as (if not more) popular than the Nolan films. Before the Burton movies, for the majority of people the Adam West Batman was the Batman, since the most people have never read Batman comics, whereas the TV series was immensely popular. I think a true indie elitist would vote for Clooney or the first two actors on my list, but not West.

Tuomas, Friday, 19 September 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

That's exactly it—if anything, West is the populist choice.

Millsner, Friday, 19 September 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Will someone who is NOT clinically insane explain how voting for the man who played Batman in the second most popular movie ever is not populist?

Anyway, Bale does a great job and gets my vote.

voted west, but would vote for kevin conroy if there was an option. i don't really like any of the others that much (especially not keaton).

Lewis Wilson in a walk

henry s, Friday, 19 September 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

who's Lewis Wilson?

henry s, Friday, 19 September 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Lewis Wilson sort of grew on me after my first few weeks of watching the serial. He deserves a sympathy vote.

no Batusi no cred

I want to be your Dairy Queen (latebloomer), Saturday, 20 September 2008 04:39 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure I've ever seen Wilson or Lowery, but all of the others, from Adam West onwards, are absolutely terrible and hammy Batmans.

Vision, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

To everyone complaining about the batvoice, remember that it wasn't so pronounced in Batman Begins. I mean, he did the growl, but his dialogue came above a raspy whisper on many occasions. Almost as if he was speaking in a normal (but different) voice at times.

Dirty Sanchez (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Saturday, 20 September 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Bale's Batvoice is silly but it hardly ruins the movies.

How could I remember the "reciting the multiplication table backwards" bit in that clip but have forgotten the Batusi? I think I paid attention to the wrong bits as a kid.

three years pass...

Watching the original Animated Series. Everything about this show rocked, but the animation was crap. Which is kinda expected, since it was at Tiny Toons-level.

The voicework, art direction, and designs transcended every other superhero toon every made, surpassing even the Fleischer Superman.
