Down in the cellar in the Boho zoneI went looking for some sweet inspiration, oh wellJust another hard-time bandWith Negro affectationsI was a hopeful in rooms like thisWhen I was working cheapIt's an old romance-the Boho danceIt hasn't gone to sleep
But even on the scuffleThe cleaner's press was in my jeansAnd any eye for detailCaught a little lace along the seams
And you were in the parking lotSubterranean by your own designThe virtue of your style inscribedOn your contempt for mineJesus was a beggar, he was rich in graceAnd Solomon kept his head in all his gloryIt's just that some steps outside the Boho danceHave a fascination for me
A camera pans the cocktail hourBehind a blind of potted palmsAnd finds a lady in a Paris dressWith runs in her nylons
You read those books where luxuryComes as a guest to take a slaveBooks where artists in noble povertyGo like virgins to the graveDon't you get sensitive on me'Cause I know you're just too proudYou couldn't step outside the Boho dance nowEven if good fortune allowed
Like a priest with a pornographic watchLooking and longing on the slySure it's stricken from your uniformBut you can't get it out of your eyes
Nothing is capsulized in meOn either side of townThe streets were never really mineNot mine these glamour gowns

C'mon, defining hipsters is easy! Just assume the term is purely a visual identifyer for use by your grandpa:
1) Group of humans wearing 18-hole cherry docs, ripped jeans, leather jakets covered in studs/damned patches, etc, hair done in mohawks, discussing the Exploited vs The Damned: "Look at those punks over there!"
2) Group of humans wearing huge low-rise FUBU jeans, parkas, pirates hats, bling, discussing the new T.I. vs Young Jeezy.: "Look at those hip-hoppers over there!"
3) Group of humans wearing skinny grey jeans, retro sneakers, hoodies with abstract neon prints, 80s plastic sunglasses, angular hair/trucker hat, discussing Crystal Castles vs Santogold: "Look at those hipsters over there!"
I'll let myself out...

According to the popular weblog Hipster Runoff, "Hipster" is a dead term. These people refer to themselves as "Alts" and non Alts as mainstreamers.
Are "Hipsters" held in the same low esteem by the ilx faithful as "Indie Kids" or is the fact that the music they listen to is more danceable (Electro/Blog House) make them better?

also, are people who write zines automatically hipsters? because i think this guy is doing the whole "complaning about his peers" that hipsters love to do.
Bedford Avenue was awful. The people were mostly rich kids with no natural or organic qualities to them. They were artificial people, their own insecure clique, with perfectly fashionable torn clothes, expensive shoes and tattoos, all scared little mama’s boys and daddy’s girls. Death. I spoke very little with anyone, I could not relate. I went for long walks, I spent a lot of time reading. I ate at a Polish diner -pretty waitresses, cheap food. I liked that I couldn’t understand them. Most of the things I overheard on Bedford nearly made me sick. I couldn’t wait for Lee to arrive. She would hate the place too, it would drive her crazy, and she was completely irresistible when she was mad.I had been spending Monday nights at the Sidewalk Cafe, in the East Village. It had taken me six weeks to find the most well-attended open mic. I had made a few friends there. Dave Cuomo, good man, ran a small paper called Urban Folk and had reviewed my demo in it very favorably. Frank Hoier, John Sfara, Dan Costello, I knew a lot of people there. I knew the bar-maid, Mericea. I spent a lot of time sitting at the bar flirting with her. She took a lot of my money. She made drinking even more enjoyable. I never realized drinking was a waste of money until I couldn’t afford it anymore. Finally Lee arrived. When she saw me she ra

"At the risk of sounding self-righteous, TV bores me. I was raised on it, and I've seen 1000 episodes of Three's Company like most people my age, but nowadays if I try to sit and watch television -- even (and really especially) cable news -- for more than about an hour, I start to go nuts. It is profoundly understimulating. Nothing makes me want to read a book more than watching TV.
