*~*~* this is a thread for general hipster topics, ideas, thoughts, plans, diagrams *~*~*

some thigns i have observed about hipsters:

• they are often "ironic"
• many of them seem well-off and/or caucasian
• some of them live in brooklyn for example williamsburg
• oftentimes it is difficult to define what is a hipster
• they listen to music and sometimes do various kind of art work
• they have funky haircuts
• their clothes tend toward the tight-fitting variety

C'mon, defining hipsters is easy! Just assume the term is purely a visual identifyer for use by your grandpa:

1) Group of humans wearing 18-hole cherry docs, ripped jeans, leather jakets covered in studs/damned patches, etc, hair done in mohawks, discussing the Exploited vs The Damned: "Look at those punks over there!"

2) Group of humans wearing huge low-rise FUBU jeans, parkas, pirates hats, bling, discussing the new T.I. vs Young Jeezy.: "Look at those hip-hoppers over there!"

3) Group of humans wearing skinny grey jeans, retro sneakers, hoodies with abstract neon prints, 80s plastic sunglasses, angular hair/trucker hat, discussing Crystal Castles vs Santogold: "Look at those hipsters over there!"

it's very uncool to wear sunglasses after sunset. unless of course you should be wearing sunglasses after sunset in which case it's very uncool to take them off.

According to the popular weblog Hipster Runoff, "Hipster" is a dead term. These people refer to themselves as "Alts" and non Alts as mainstreamers.

Are "Hipsters" held in the same low esteem by the ilx faithful as "Indie Kids" or is the fact that the music they listen to is more danceable (Electro/Blog House) make them better?

FYI,

normal people call indie kids "hipsters."

I don't know, I hear normals say the I-word a lot more than the H-word.

normals in New York City use "hipster"; get into the suburbs and most people have no idea about 'hipster'... though on my last trip to the suburbs even the most boring, most norm of my old friends was wearing skinny jeans and his girlfriend some hideous bright colored American APparel skin tight pants.

Actually, on closer read it sounds like older or older-style hipster complaining about this new breed.

i don't think you can be a hipster if you spend a lot of time at open mic nites. a nerd, maybe...

he sounds like one of those fat, grumbly dorks with that shitty mustache+goatee kind-of beard. you know the type. they're always way into chess and shit. "these guys are so phoney man!! hurrgghh! always taking up the tables at barnes and noble with their i-pods and vintage clothes!"

Yeah, hipsterdom doesn't stand still. A lot of the points raised in this thread now seem ridiculous or outdated.

I remember all my "scene" friends wearing beards and their sister's jeans back then ... when nobody even made "skinny jeans".
