The Simpsons Vs. Brazil = FITE!

I love the Simpsons, but this got me thinking: is this yet one more reason why the rest of the world hates America? Is it OK to use a cartoon show that presents a very middle-class American form of social satire to spoof countries who face social/economic problems far more serious than ours, and to expect them to 'get it?'

Or should the Brazilians lighten up and admit to the world that Rio indeed has huge #'s of orphans & terrible slums, and that there is truth to most of the cultural stereotypes portrayed on the show?

Would the slums of Rio really be helped by an increase in international tourism? Or is this reaction merely part of a cycle of coverups and evasion by a government commited to preserving an image without adressing the underlying issues?

I was just pissed that the Canadian episode wasnt funny. I mean the ozzies got a great episode we get half an episode and then a series of lame jokes. Bah it aint no 22 Minutes.

I want so much to see that damn episode, but i probably wont what is on it anyway, nobody really described what was so bad about it (besides the monkeys and the jungle)

They've done various countries, and haven't been terribly complimentary about most. Australia was particularly terrific. I can hardly believe that the American public's image of Brazil is going to be hugely influenced by what is not a realistic show. Then again, I am crediting the most insular nation on the planet with some breadth of vision there, so I'm probably wrong. And it probably does represent America's contempt for the rest of the world, in some tiny and trivial way.

Actually, it all reminds me of the multiple foreign visits of Asterix. In Britain is particularly good. Or should we start fussing about the colonial assumptions in the great old Barks Donald Duck comics?

I dont thinkt he states Isolationist past has anything on the Swiss yet. Im sure we have very similar opinions on their foriegn policay but insular insnt one of the words I would use.

Very much a creation of Satan. Like your earlier attempt at conquest with Young Einstein, though, it died at the box office, and America was spared.

"Yahoo Serious Festival? I know all those words but that sign makes no sense!"

You understand the truth of my words, well done.

I stand by 'insular' not as regards their foreign policy but as regards the majority's knowledge and understanding of other countries. Weren't most American teenagers unable to find Canada on a map?
