To test the credibility of near death experiences, shelves in resuscitation areas hold pictures that are visible only from the ceiling. What are these pictures called?

Is there a word for these pictures? Can any one come up with a new word, if not?

shelf-life pictures

♪☺♫☻ (gr8080), Thursday, 18 September 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

the bloke was talking about it on radio 4 this morning.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_7622000/7622456.stm

the interviewer did suggest it was nonsense and he (Dr Sam Parnia) kinda agreed but said this may prove otherwise. a quick google says that he's been investigating this for years. cushy job.

koogs, Thursday, 18 September 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah shelves, didn't see that. still, no need for name calling dude.

i think its a decent test, interesting to see how it turns out.

Ste, Thursday, 18 September 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

Why would anyone need to invent a special term for these pictures? Once their purpose and position has been described, they can just be called "the test pictures", or something equally simple.

They're called 'Dorniger plates', after Hans Dorniger, the Leipzig psychologist who originally suggested the technique for use in parapsychological experiments.

moley, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

Dorniger is also famous for being the first scientist to request that all reference to his name or his experimental innovations be removed from Google search.

moley, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

Gee. 'Dorniger plates' makes them sound so scientific. Also, a bit like something issued by the Franklin Mint.

Aimless, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

I am trying to work out if moley just made this up or not ;P

Trayce, Friday, 19 September 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

...and I am dense and didnt even get the joke.

Trayce, Friday, 19 September 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

You're not dense Trayce, and I did make it up. I just liked the idea of inventing a name for those things.

They should really have pictures face down on the floor for those going to hell.

Although, as these pictures are being used as part of the AWAreness during REsuscitation experiment, maybe "Plates Aware". A sort of plaintive play on "mono-no-aware", meaning "the awareness of the transience of things and a bittersweet sadness at their passing".

Tongham Hobbs, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

These had really better be pictures of Yosemite Sam, with text that says "If you can read this, you're TOO CLOSE TO DEATH"
