I know you're all either (a) poor or (b) tax evaders or (c) not Brits, but: Any comments?

(I have to analyse the darn thing as part of my job grrr)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Expand yer wallet and mean what you spend.

nathalie, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the Budget has already done my head in today as at 7am i popped BBC news on whilst making a cuppa, and there was Peter Snow standing in front of a computerised picture of GOrdon Brown standing Smaug-like next to a huge pile of TREASURE, then a mechanical digger came along and took some of the treasure and put it in a pile called "Public spending". WHO SEZ THE BBC ARE SQUARE EH???

katie, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

katie, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT art thou back from the wildes of Maidenhead? i'm coming home soon!

katie, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mixed, I have no problem at all with paying more tax to sort out public sector services, then again I always curse my nicotine addiction at this time of year.

Anna, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If that bugger has put tax on ciggies up again I'll castrate him.

i like the TECHNICAL term for alcopops: "Premium Package Coolers" (!)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Drinks and the Budget

News for alcopops fans:

Mr Brown also announced that from 28 April, alcopops - described as premium package coolers - will be taxed at the same rate as spirits.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

great minds think alike - Jeff !

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or just give up, DG. He's trying to do you a favour...

Mark C, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if you tolerate this, your wallets will be next.

Queen G, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Or just give up, DG. He's trying to do you a favour..."

No he isn't, he wants more of my money to spend on little model shipwrecks for his aquarium.

DG, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If he just put it on the bloody income tax, I really wouldn't mind. But I don't mind it going up at all, to be honest, as long as it's going towards public services. (Although interesting article somehwere the other day in that Britain really is in a minority where everything is (almost) totally free).

Bill, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think a model shipwreck tax would be a vote WINNAH.

Mark C, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just spotted in the small print: Gordon's proposing to tighten up the tax relief given to British films, subject to consultation, so that only "films intended for theatrical release at the commercial cinema" qualify. If that means fewer crap Brit-gangsta flicks in future then hurrah!

Jeff W, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you seen they are going to raise revenue by placing a charge on animals which have fixed parasites on them. So this means for every dog you have which has fixed parasites (not fleas as they can move freely) you will have to pay a ten pound flat rate.

Pete, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, there are lots of really strange regulations already concerning animals and taxation. For example, there is VAT on pet food, but not on food for working animals. Apparently the question "is there VAT on greyhound food?" is quite common in accountancy exams.

MarkH, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently this one is going to be called the Tic Tax.

Pete, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete that is the worst lie ever.

Emma, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HA!

Sarah, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

groan! Shame it isn't real though, they'd be inundated with calls asking whether tapeworms were free-moving or not. Erm, maybe.

MarkH, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There was also a bizarre music import tax which Gordon Brown appears to be levelling on certain obscure Northern Soul tracks from primarily the late sixties. Because Motown has a UK office they will be exempt but other labels would be. This has been dubber the Soul Tax in the media - though will probably be better known by the shorterned version (which also happens to be the letter for the import licence S which need to be filled in).

Pete, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[ILE rhythm section maintains silence]

Graham, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

STax.

Pete, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How many more of these are there? Could you please get them out of your system QUICKLY.

Emma, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the love of God, that was awful Pete.

Anna, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have challenged Pete to try and get another one in but he has not managed to live up to the challenge. I think it may have possibly been too hard.

Sarah, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I understood that there was to be a special levy on immoral activities if carried out by the members of the medical profession?

Tim, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah - Stax one was the extra one.

I've had Tim's one going round my head for five minutes and cannot work it out. Put us out of our misery.

Pete, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also on instances of the word "AT" if written above a certain size. Happily the size threshold is set at an extremely high level.

Tim, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete: that would be the Dr. sin tax.

Arf!

Tim, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will there be a special levy on people who fart in public called the Body Odor Tax (BOTax for short)?

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Massive AT Tax. Lord - we need Protection. What have I started.

Pete, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When Animals AT Tax. Let loose the floodgates!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
