A classic on many levels. Love, sex, murder, mystery, & action in Hawaii. A red Ferrari, Vietnam flashbacks, ex-Navy SEALs and ex-Marines, island-hoppin' choppers, bikinis, mustaches, the Detroit Tigers hat, T.C., Rick, Higgins, Robin Masters, Zeus, Apollo, and one of best theme songs in TV history.

Tom Selleck's eyebrow raising in the opening credits.. swoon

Oh yeah. Anyway, my mom's fave TV series of the eighties in the eighties, bar none. And I think she'd still think so today, though probably Star Trek: The Next Generation ranks up there with it. From a very hairy man to a bald one, my mom has a cool range. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last episode is a true classic -- all the way down to Magnum whistling the theme from Bridge Over The River Kwai before dusting Higgins' bridge...

JM, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember being astounded as a kid to hear the actor that played Higgins, whose name I cannot for the life of me remember, speak in his native Texan drawl. I thought he was English! That's acting, I guess!

Oh, er, Classic naturally!

Bill E, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uber classic show. I meant he main character got shot, even fi just nce. The finale was superb, even better then the ending to Night Ryder. ST-TNG was SOOOOO much better after the 2nd season though. mmmmmmm Tasha with Skanky rebel hair. Oh wait here was I again? Oh yeah, Tasha with wonderfully dirty fringe. Never mind Worf, who was coolio till he got that kid.
Dang, Im supposed to be talking about Magnium PI which has one fo the best themes outside My So Called Life or Twin Peaks. Umm never mind.

Tasha, come to butthead.

I would have initially posted an the image of Magnum raising his eyebrow, but being the dummy that I am, don't know how to post images here. I don't even know how to italicize words. Help, please.

bryan, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved that episode where he was teaching detective school. You could tell the whole cast didn't give a shit and were basically partying on the set. 'Riptide' was great for that too!

I was Magnum P.I. for Halloween last year. My mustache fell off in the punch bowl.

Chris, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone see that Selleck movie 'Folks'? Very silly, but Selleck is oddly 'stashe-less and what's more, he loses a nut. It's a little known comedy gem.

Is Bellisario going to be involved?

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Also, my fave ep: the "Open Water" one, where he's paddling around in the pacific ocean for 24 hours and flashes back to his dad.

The tone of the story & Bellisario's name at the end finally clued me that these were the same guys responsible for later creating "Quantum Leap."

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

You know the friend of TM's that dies (Mack?) and then comes back to life (or does he?) -- is he really him or not, in the end?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

A few weeks ago, I was reading the imdb.com trivia for "Hawaii 5-O". There was something in there about how in the beginning, the characters of "Magnum" would reference the characters in "5-O". Jack Lord was supposed to guest-star as the Governor of Hawaii or something, but it sadly never happened.

what is cool is to have a fleet (or two) doberman pinschers that follow your every command. i would like that.

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

and named Zeus and Apollo!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

yes!

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

Also, my fave ep: the "Open Water" one, where he's paddling around in the pacific ocean for 24 hours and flashes back to his dad.

I remember that vividly. Also, the one called "Did You See The Sunrise This Morning," where at the end he just blows the guy away. Harsh stuff.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe we need a thread for "Simon & Simon" as well. One episode began with some mysterious person handcuffing a girl's ankle to the drain on the bottom of a pool, so she couldn't quite come up for air. That gave me drowning nightmares for years.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

The two things that are upsetting me the most about the possibility of a Magnum redux are
- The theme song should not be touched. It is an absolute CLASSIC of 80s theme song perfection. The stacatto guitar opening, the horn fan fare, the breakdown segment with the Clapton-esque guitar lead, all while watching Thomas, Rick, TC and Higgins tear shit up, Hawai'i style. If they try to redo it, a la Mission Impossible, they will be bismirching a CLASSIC.

- And TC will prolly be played by LL Cool J or Usher.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

And who could possibly match Selleck? Nt just look like him, but play serious, brooding scenes as well as light comedy?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Frank Sinatra, a big fan, play a world-weary detective in one episode???

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes
Frank Sinatra playing "Retired Police Sergeant Michael Doheny" in episode: "Laura" (episode # 7.17) 25 February 1987

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

He played Retired Police Sergeant Michael Doheny in a 1987 episode entitled "Laura". Thanks, imdb. Thimdb.

I subtitled a lot of these a couple of years ago. A joy to work on, actually. Theme music was different early on.

xpost!

I got an email the other day about Frank Sinatra guest starring on Magnum.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

so is TS gay or not? i thought he was repulsive back then but he was really the guy everyones mom was into. i told my mom he was gay and the word spread broken housewives hearts all over the southern suburbs of sydney. the shorts and the moustache - it kinda made sense. to this day im not sure if id actually heard that or if i was just practicing a little pre-teen slander.

btw i think he's pretty hot now.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Do you mean, "I now think he's hot" or "I think that he is hot at the present moment"?

Because this is what he looks like now:

Oh man, i remember seeing this as a very young dorkling. same reaction.

what about a thread for all those other 80s crime-solver drama/mystery shows? "Hart to Hart," "the Fall Guy," "Riptide," "Cagney & Lacey," "Scarecrow & Mrs King," "Remington Steele," "Midnight Caller," "Q.E.D.," "Probe," "The Equalizer," "Murder, She Wrote"

Actually, it's kind of frightening how many of these I remember.

i tried to find a pic of him from the opening credits montage where he's giving the chick a snorkeling lesson and steals a glance at her bikini-clad a$$ while holding her in the water and gives that "whew" kinda look. that would prove he's totally straight.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe he has that look because she just let one go.

seven years pass...

SPOILER ALERT

thomas didn't have amnesia after all. he was roofied and placed at the scene. he finally figured it all out when he got the ferrari back from the shop and discovered his seat position had been moved!

andrew m., Friday, 12 July 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

couple more things. the 1972 movie 'daughters of satan' starring seleck was written by john c. higgins. it was the script he's credited with and he also wrote 'untamed youth,' which was one of the first mst3k's i ever saw and an early fave but that's a story for another thread. anyway, you can probably see where i'm going with this. john c. higgins. jonathan q. higgins III! coincidence?

ALSO

if this horrifying reboot ever does get made and they don't cast chris parnell as higgins they're real dummies. he IS higgins.

andrew m., Friday, 12 July 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)
