Singing around the house...do you do it and what do you sing?

I feel it's necessary to sing music like Frank Sinatra for this....preferably in a state of undress. You can always mix in some whistling especially if you don't know all the words.

What about you? Do you sing around the house? When do you do it? Does it make you happy?

I love a sing. It disperses the dark clouds of gloom momentarily, and lifts you up on a wave of self created bonhomie.

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

- Yes, constantly
- Wide range of tunes
- Usually with improvised lyrics about what the dog's doing

^^ when my girlfriend thinks im being boring by reading or whatever she makes up a song and then quizzes me about the lyrics

I sang all of Belle and Sebastian's Photo Jenny the other day, first to my dog and then with my boyfriend when he came in to watch me. We danced! It was a perfect movie moment.

Since my landlord gave me a serious notice to keep my music down, I use headphones more and I think this has actually made me sing more, which has been a positive thing. I can sing pretty well and I enjoy it, though I used to do it a lot more when I was younger.

I used to sing "New York, New York" a la Sinatra when I was a kid. I didn't have the record or anything, just pretended I was performing and sang it to the wall.

- For some reason I spent the whole summer with Michael Jackson's birthday song for Lisa Simpson stuck in my head, which would be sung to the dog using his various nicknames and alleging that he was a poop-head

- I should also admit that two recurring subjects in my songs, apart from the dog, are "monkeys" and "poop," including one song about monkeys made out of poop who run a newspaper and perform various tasks that have to rhyme with the word for poop used in the previous line

nabisco, Monday, 22 September 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

^^ (this keeps the mind sharp, thinking up new words for poop and then tasks related to newspaper publishing that effectively rhyme with those words)

OTM. This is the other thing I do - make up new lyrics to whatever song is playing on my stereo, all about Maxwell Edison. Some from this week:
Maxwell, you're a rich dog!
Jocking Maxy (Jockin' Jay-z)
Ain't No Puppy
Free Dog in Paris

It's pretty lame, but satisfying

Gershwin, mostly. Actually I don't sing at my house now, too many people around. But when I did, it was mostly Gershwin and stuff from the 40s like "Blue Skies" etc.

Laurel, Monday, 22 September 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

Oh I guess "Blue Skies" is from 1927 but whatevs.

Laurel, Monday, 22 September 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

popular songs from over the years but replace lyrics with lyrics about the cat or the food we're about to have. i.e. "cuz this is taco night and the seas'nin's right oh what a night (oh what a night)" or whatever feels right at the time.

andrew m., Monday, 22 September 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

I used to go around the house singing C & C Music Factory's "Things That Make You Go Hmm"

snoball, Monday, 22 September 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

(And then pointed at houseguests and said "these people over here ..." ?)

nabisco, Monday, 22 September 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

that's so cute andrew!

i sing sea chanties, christmas carols, bits of mozart's requiem i still remember, or the hallelujah chorus...mainly when i'm alone and hyper or bored.

Maria, Monday, 22 September 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

"scoop" is the obvious rhyme, right nabisco

Mohammed Butt (max), Monday, 22 September 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that rhyme was the whole reason they were running a paper the first time I sang it. At some point it gets too hard to keep up newspaper rhymes, and you have to let the monkeys have different jobs in each couplet.

(for instance they might own a bar and have lots of beer on TAP, or become conservationists and work to protect endangered SPECIES)

Yesterday I had children's song "Down by the Bay" in my head and had to make up verses...

Down by the bay
Where the watermelons grow
Back to my home
I dare not go
For if I do
My mother will say...

(make it up starting here)

"Did you ever see a fly
Wearing a tie?"

(resume)

Down by the bay.

I had just decided to make up a set of verses that were all about silly-sounding things that COULD happen (a goat taking off her coat = being shaved, a cat singing as he sat = yowling at girl cats, when I got to "a fish asleep on a dish" and though -- whoah, what about some meanie verses that are about animals as FOOD and then I got distracted.

the valves of houston (gbx), Monday, 22 September 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

I make up lyrics to television show themes relating to the plot of the television show. It's not very creative. And I sing "Parties in Chelsea" by the Television Personalities a lot.

Trip Maker, Monday, 22 September 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Everything, all the time, I even catch myself doing it in the office sometimes. That's the most embarrassing thing.

The Accountant Of Taste (Masonic Boom), Monday, 22 September 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Some singing, LOTS of whistling, mostly unconscious--I only know I'm doing it when my wife asks me what tune it's meant to be.
Sing a lot to the dog, actually. That seems to be a theme on here.

Tip for new players: singing Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, etc, is much more satisfying if done with strong Scottish accent ("Starrrrt spreadin' the nooos, Ah'm leeavin' tooodae!" / "Pooosie caht, poosie caht, ah lurve ye, wi' yer sweet li'l pooosie caht nohse!"), or in the voice of Gollum.

James Morrison, Monday, 22 September 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

Not as much as I did with my ex - he used to break out into xmas carols sung a la Bing Crosby all the damn time, so I would too. Also, singing things to the cat. Often that bit from the simpsons, where Homer goes "I know you can hear MY thoughts boy: meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow meow" etc etc.

I hum and doot dn doot de dooo all the time, too. And talk to myself.
