I liked Bend it Like Beckham...some of the scenes/jokes are a bit random and not well set up...but generally, it's an enjoyable film...and I liked spotting places I know!

The other film features a boy with a terrible haircut = Harry Potter flashback.

I saw "About a Boy" on Sunday - I liked in unequivocally. Well- directed, top acting (the boy, haircut or no (and have you seen his eyebrows?), is fantastic), well-worked story. Most of you will hate it, I expect, but I thought it was the best film I've seen in months and months.

Pete - it might be one of those Thursday night previews.

two years pass...
I just saw Beckham, and it was cute. Except the last five minutes kinda sucked, a la Ally Sheedy's makeoverThe Breakfast Club: they can't let Jess just do her thing, there has to be the promise of romance with the coach. Ugh. I also just checked IMDB and I'm currently trying to wrap my head around the fact that Parminder Nagra is TEN years older than Keira Knightley!!

"makeover IN The Breakfast Club"

I'm quite fond of About a Boy. Being American, I am deeply succeptible to Hugh Grant's floppy-haired charms, and the scene where the mom and the boy sing "Killing Me Softly" with their eyes closed is pretty hilarious. I accidently saw it twice the weekend it opened.

I'll stand up for Hornby here and say I preferred the book of About a Boy and the film was fairly disappointing in comparison. I haven't seen Bend it Like Beckham, but will report back with a comparison next week once it's been on the telly.

How do you accidentally see it twice?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah and I saw it on Friday, then we were visiting her family the next day and they wanted to see a movie and that was the only one people could agree on, so we saw it again.

There should be a word for the relief you feel when you find out an actress you find attractive is not only of age but older than you!

ha ha

I loved that one suave motherfucker at the wedding that ended up making out with some girl in the bathroom. Classy.

The most hilarious thing about Bend it Like Beckham is the way Jonathan Rhys-Meyers runs toward Parminder Nagra at the end of the movie -- even the girliest of girly girls would run less girlishly than he does.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I could beat Jonathan Rhys-Meyers up with my little fingers.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I cringe cringe cringe watching J. Rhys-Meyers running at the end. So much hotness damaged in 2 seconds. About a Boy is one of the few books-->movies where I thought the movie was better.

"Bend it Like Beckham" wins for me, despite Rhys-Meyers. It's all about Parminder.

The opposite of this should be Eberting or 'pulling an Ebert.'

Feeble of mind I am, I have mistakenly been reading Jonathon Rhys-Myers and Jonathon Rhys-DAVIES. For a moment I was lost to a certain immeasurable uncertainty over whether or not I had seen the same film as everyone else.

Yeah, there's an AND in that first sentence that's supposed to be an AS. You probably figured this out already though, smartasses.
