Meta-Question: Is ILE getting ruder?

Yes, a paraphrase of the Tom-asked ILM question.

Maybe I deserved the doomparody on the Summarise Me thread because I did impersonate him myself, but it did get me thinking.

Many of us think of this as a safe place with a group of friends where we can spill our deepest secrets, darkest thoughts, and silliest moments. I don't want to see that atmosphere disappear in bitterness, sniping and nastiness.

Thoughts, impressions, comments?

Kate the Saint, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No. Then again English is my 24567th language. I don't understand half of what is posted on this board. You are talking about purple puppies, right?
Seriously, no, I don't have the impression it is getting nastier. Of course cyber-communication (?) can easily be misinterpreted.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I DON'T think of it as a safe place with a group of friends where I can spill my deepest secrets, darkest thoughts, and silliest moments. That would be insane. I have never even met more than about five of you. And ANY fucker could come along and read any of it, any minute.

I ALREADY think it's all full of bitterness, sniping and nastiness. But so, I suppose, are lots of other things in life.

the pinefox, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess you're right, and I guess I should stop posting, since I seem unable to keep the personal and the universal separate.

Kate the Saint, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Y-you mean friends *aren't* supposed to be bitter, nasty blokes who snipe at one another? I've been living my life terribly terribly wrong.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I seem unable to get the personal and the universal together.

the pinefox, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hell w/ this place anyway, i mostly have been hanging out on the Anarchy forum. man that place is a zoo of craziness!
recent threads - "Poll: should I kill myself?", "Help! How do I masturbate?". I mean - important anarchist issues - how to masturbate? Bakunin didn't spend enough time on that subj. obv.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought some of the things on "Summarize Me" were downright nasty (note: I'm not talking about whoever impersonated me, I'm not that hypersensitive). I guess people think that they can post whatever kind of hurtful things they want to by using someone else's address, but I found it to be very cowardly.

I still think most of the people here are friendly; it could have been lurkers or someone with an axe to grind that posted most of the reprehensible stuff, so I wouldn't take it too seriously. It does trouble me that some of the more bitter/jealous parody stuff was directed at Kate and Suzy. It could be coincidental, but somehow I doubt it.

Nicole, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah that stuff did seem too mean to be funny. it was creepy that you couldn't tell who anyone was.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(i don't mean all that whole thread, just the stuff nicole's talking about)

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, yeah I do think there's more of an edge to the place now, put it down to the hot weather...hmmm like Message Board Rage or something.

JEL, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No worries about me. I quit my job and am off to Japan...err...watch out Momus! Just thought I would have a bit of fun before going off.

PS. My parodies were all meant in light humour. Please do not take it bitterly. The world is 'ard enough. I have love for everyone! PS. That was me Nicole.

See ya later.

I never hated anyone on here. It was a fascinating time. Sorry for being such a c*nt to everyone on this board. Obviously, I enjoyed it or else I would not have spent so much time on here!!!!

: - )

(PS. I enjoyed the parodies of me)

whoisit, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This board is already nasty. You threatened to get someone fired and lose their job. And you called doomintroll nasty and creepy. This may have affected someone in real life. Sorry, I have no sympathy.

Sorry, why doesn't someone call the Law Society of Canada and ask to speak to someone in charge. Tell them that someone in office is abusing email privileges and other users and let them take care of it from there. I don't think they'd like it very much if one of their lame temps was wasting so much time on the interweb. Or is this too bitchy?

Sorry that was my wife...

Anyways, enjoy your lives. Bye bye bye. Get out of the sunshine...

whoisit, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Honestly, I'm a big girl and I didn't mind the satire, but wish it had been of higher quality, since most of the others were written with a kind of warped affection. If Kate and I were the targets of everyone's favourite troll, clearly the publishing industry has a while to wait for the Great Canadian Novel that will 'save' it. Eh?

suzy, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, whoever that was apologising posted from 66.59.184.18 which leads to gtconnect.net.
Anyway, I think that 'summarise me' thread was a disastrous idea. Come on people, what's the problem?

DG, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is 'doomintroll's' wife, no, I won't mention my name, as my husband has not mentioned his name, but I have to say this, he showed me the 'hate thread' about him and he was quite honestly upset about it for days afterwards. Kate, FYI, I did marry 'doomintroll' because I love him. He may get passionate and headstrong about music and his writing and his personality gets, 'much' for some people, but he is a kind-hearted bloke. We are off to Japan and I think that seeing the hate thread was a good idea for him. Maybe tone himself down quite a bit. As for his writing, it is excellent and I shall be supporting him in Japan when we go. I have had a fine education and I do no genius from hack. I shall take my leave now, some of parodies were from me, because, you upset 'doomintroll' you upset me. That's how it works.

A.K., Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, I can see how poor old doompatrol was victimized.

if your husband runs down the street yelling "cunt" at someone, do you get upset when the person who is getting yelled at punches his sorry arse?

junichiro, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Listen, I know him my own husband. And if you read the thread above, his obsessive passions get in the way of civility.

A.K., Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doomintroll as a virtual personality IS nasty and creepy, and a bully to boot. And any bully who abuses me in a cowardly fashion, picks on my friends, insults people in a way that suggests he has been trying to locate them IRL is potentially a much bigger threat (in the safety sense, not the ego sense) than is legal. He is certainly aware of this, and unrepentant, realising his bad behaviour at work could get him the sack.

Which is why I suggested what has been copied upthread and am most decidedly not sorry I did so. My hope was that DP would realise he'd gone too far and lay off, thus leaving no need to investigate where HE worked and let them know what was happening on their time.

I'm with Kate on this one. ILE is a good forum. The only time it becomes a bad forum is down to one person who seems repulsed yet fascinated by all of us. Go figure. The rest of us may have our quibbles, but we make them up quickly because we have enough respect for others to be honest in our dealings with them.

suzy, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so we're supposed to excuse and accept that? i think not. sorry if not everyone blindly accepts his twuntish behavior.

junichiro, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Listen love, you do not know him. Let's just leave it at that. We are leaving for Japan this weekend and you will not have to deal with him. I take offence at what you said about my husband. I KNOW AND LOVE THIS ABUSIVE BULLY. So, please stop talking about him in such ghastly terms.

And for the job, love, he does not need it now, I'm taking him on holiday in Japan for six months.

He is a good person.

A.K., Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I KNOW AND LOVE THIS ABUSIVE BULLY

doesn't this sound like a Sun headline?

junichiro, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boredom with life leads to this sort of hatred.

I feel sorry for all of you.

A.K., Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm pleased Mrs Doomintroll can stand up for his human side: I'm pleased there's someone in his life who seems on swift acquaintance able to be wiser and less emotionally reckless and self-centred than he is. I rode him as hard than anyone, and I think probably with less good reason than Suzy or Kate: I don't usually hate easily, and I admit that enjoyed hating someone who seemed so willing to go all out to get himself elected Mr Hateful. It was a holiday from worrying about someone's feelings. If he's ever presented HIMSELF, instead of masks, then things would have been different.

I *liked* the half-malicious parodies of me: they weren't terribly precise, but someone was hitting on something for some of them. I think that thread was a *good* idea.

mark s, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

remember what i said about there being lots of girls who would love to marry the devil?

ethan, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look, if your husband is going to insult people he's never met in a compulsive manner, he's going to be taken to task for it. He got singled out because NO OTHER TROLLS POST ON THIS BOARD.

If he had not been personally abusive to a number of people on here, no one would have become angry or frightened, there would be no need for this conversation and we'd probably see him like you do, as an essentially nice person who gets worked up about the stuff he likes. But that didn't happen, did it?

His loss as much as it is ours.

suzy, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A.K. or whatever you are calling yourself this week, I don't believe that you are anyone's wife, I believe that you are yet another "personality" Doom has spawned for his usual abusive tactics.

Thank you for ruining this board for me. I won't be back, either, as I honestly don't believe that you will be able to leave us alone. Sorry to everyone, I've mostly enjoyed my time here, thanks to DG and to Tom for providing this forum. But I really have to go. Goodbye.

Kate the Saint, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If it makes a difference, Kate, I wish you wouldn't go.

mark s, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me too.

Kim, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate , if you choose to go, i will support you, Doom has never attacked me so i do not understand your frustration. But i do not want to lose contact with you. Can i email or ICQ you ?

anthony, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think it's getting nastier.

Mike Hanley, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd hate to lose having you here too, Kate. Apart from the considerations of friendship, it would mean Bullies 1, the Sane O. And we can't be having that.

suzy, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't go Kate!

DG, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate that's mental, OBVIOUSLY you've gotta stay here.

duane zarakov, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mean , you ARE this board.

duane zarakov, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you know what tho', now that i know it was doomo who writ the 'mean' parodies of kate & suzy i can relax & just think they're funny. which is dumm i know but check it, i could've writ one like that of kate mice elf real easy same as anyone could've, didn't tho 'cause it would've been mean. (maybe if i knew you IRL i would've felt like it was OK but y'know) the whole existence of doomintroll is good 'cause it keeps all the mean stuff nicely contained.
anyway kate you MUST stay on the board - i (for 1) think yr real choice & it would suck if you started trying to post real carefully & not seem like WHAT YOU OBVIOUSLY ACTUALLY ARE LIKE IN REAL LIFE just 'cause of being parodied, i mean the stuff that you can take the p. outta someone for is not THAT clearly separate from thom the stuff you like about em. if you know what i mean.

duane zarakov, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate and Suzy, this seems a bit too obvious to say, but having enemies like that is flattering, because from the outside, believe me, it is so evident that your parodist is jealous, or at the very least disturbed by your personality. I once had an enemy who gave an hour long lecture at a party to several of my acquaintances about all my dirty secrets and flaws, and that was pretty flattering. But it's kind of cool you're leaving the board too! Dramatic. I hope it's all just a joke though. When I was in the presence of my enemy after she slagged me off, I used to cover my ears when she was talking etc, it was pretty funny. You guys ought to think of a humorous revenge. My ex boyfriend had some 'Loaded' magazines and they really pissed me off, so I threw them into a bin on the street. But when I told my friend she said 'Idiot! You should have written all over them and made them ridiculous!' I mean you don't have to be mean back to that guy, but get what I'm saying, don't be sad, be the opposite to him, if you think what he did was wrong.

maryann, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(her ex boyfriend w/ LOADED mags = NOT me)

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(my own copies of LOADED have feminist slogans scrawled over all the women's breasts)

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't let a cat tail like doomintroll get in your way, Kate. He's only one person (if he can be considered as such), and everyone knows what his opinion is worth.

Nicole, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm relieved to find that the Kate & Suzy parodies were the idiot Doomintroll, and not manifestations of any bitterness felt by any 'proper' posters.

Doomintroll, or your missus, if you have any guts at all and wish to stand by your postings, please e-mail me and tell me exactly why I shouldn't do my best to find and report you to the relevant authorities. Otherwise, FUCK OFF, and don't come back.

DG, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, I'm completely on Kate's side and I think it really sad if she really leaves — but before we talk ourselves back into a state of total war and collective hostility, am I the only person who thinks what just happened, albeit in very bad grace, was a capitulation on the part of the Doomintrolls? Not just an admission of wrong-doing (admittedly immediately somewhat snatched back), but also an admission that we HAD hurt his feelings. Yes, via Mrs Doomintroll, and yes of course she MAY be made-up, but that's not so important. His shtick before was all, "HaHAA, I meant to do that, you are all my PUPPETS, my experiment is a SUCCESS, my plan worked so WELL, you are all SAD." But Doomintroll upset for days = my plan worked NOT so well, ha ha oh. I think Mrs D exists, because I think the mark s-parodies were simultaneously too CLEVER and too IMPRECISE to be Doomio's work: plus they were boiled up (as were Kate's and Suzy's) from a very small sample of our posts, those relating directly to Doomintroll himself (course, I might totally be tripping here in vanity here, and the mark-s-parodies weren't either Mr *or* Mrs...). And of course I don't believe for a second Mr D ever showed Mrs D any of the long-deleted threads were he got so TOTALLY (irrevocably) out of order: she still just doesn't KNOW how crappily he originally behaved, how over- the-border psychotic he acted, on next to no provocation.

Kate's right, he will surely be back, sometime: but any sense of his reality diminishes him as a demon, and look, he's begun to swap his weapons (mocking maddening facelessness) for ours (leading with his vulnerability). He's frightened of — and drawn to and razzed by — ILE's achievement of not-purely-virtual intimacy. I think this slightly rancid taste is what victory feels like.

mark s, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The fact that some people (I'm not sure how many) misused the 'Summarize Me' thread doesn't make the thread a bad idea. It's a GREAT idea. There is an awful lot to be learned about language, style, thought patterns, etc, from trying to bleach your writing of your own tics and replace them with someone else's. Pastiche = Classic.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yours of me wasn't bad AT ALL , pinefox, tho actually I hardly EVER use the emoticon (never once used the smiley here or anywhere, I don't think). Or != come to that.

mark s, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

!= I only picked up last week. Obviously not from you. I could have sworn you did use emoticons, but there you go - I didn't study hard enough. I've never used an emoticon myself except on the impressions thread, though I've often thought they might make things easier.

By the way, I *still* do not really understand what roXor (?) means.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah sinker you do so use emo's, i remember that time you stuck yr tongue out at me. It was my 1st glimpse of the unknown tongue. hey anyway i'm 4-real about the anarchy forum, i know some of yez already know of it, but, it is tha guntz! there is this person on it called julie the barbarian, she is like my new hero. realise!

duane, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duane - how about the site re. The Government of the United States? There are about 1000 threads and half of them are called 'Impeach Clinton TODAY'. I think Tanya ought to get over there and ask them a question.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

apart from a little party I had with ): and :( on the Food chain, I wd be surprised if I even get into double figures with ;), :P or :—0

I have never used :) or :—)

roXoR = rocks; as in that rrrrroXoR!!
cf also suXoR, than by analogy (not always well-formed) to other 'cks' substit'n. BUT punXoR just means punk.

mark s, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks - but isn't it harder to type 'roXoR' than 'rocks'? I don't get it.

the pinefox, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duane - beware of the 'bitchman'

dave q, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As the originator of 'Summarize Me' I'd defend it for exactly the reasons the Pinefox said, and also point out that if you have a distinctive posting-style and several well-known topics of interest then two things will happen. One: you will become one of the most prominent and best-known members of the message board and get your ego massaged by lots of mentions in e.g. Cast-The-ILE-Movie. Two: you will get the piss taken out of you a little.

I like everybody who posts regularly on ILE, and I like all the ones I've met in real life too. I'd be sorry to see any of them stop posting. That said even the most prolific posters need a holiday sometimes to restore perspective a bit.

Tom, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wow! i was wondering who did the ones of me! i'm still confused as to the brown hair parody of me!

pinefox was the big winner, everyone had an attempt at being pinefox. i'd like to know which of the parodies he thought best?

but, on a more serious note - what about the children? shouldn't they be listening to more breakbeat hardcore? (sorry)

gareth, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Quite frankly I think the problem with this and ILM is that people take it too damn seriously. THIS IS NOT REAL LIFE for fuck's sake.

Ally, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're sort of right but you're sort of not. Actual people saying actual stuff to each other = "real life" of some sort, sure.

duane, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Note to Self: Acquire distinctive posting style and topics of interest. Also, that "gothic punk kids who do school shootings" thing doesn't seem to be working.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well it's never going to work if you give up NOW. You've got to stick with it, man!

(And you do have your own style and content preferences. I wasn't gonna be the one to try parodying them tho.)

Josh, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, what I mean about it is that if someone here says something negative about you, 9 times out of 10 it's someone you don't know well, has never met you or has only met you once at most, knows virtually nothing about you - so why let it affect you? There are some circumstances of people who know each other quite well being on the board together but most of us don't know each other at all. If I said, "Yo, duane, you're an asshole" (for example, not because I think that at all :), would it bother you? I would hope not, because I don't know you and I shouldn't mean anything to you.

That's what I mean - it's not something that you should let bother you. You guys don't know any of us. I don't know any of you, besides a handful of people. Don't let what someone says bother you to the point where you have to dramatically leave the board because you can't take it. Just ignore them. Easier said than done for some people but it is doable.

Ally, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

People whose opinion I value can make me feel like shit online just as they do in real-life. But the cool thing is they can also make me feel better, and both have happened on ILM/E.

Patrick, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah ally but i'm so sensitive that just you saying 'yo duane yr an asshole' as an example made me cry.

duane, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally is the voice of reason (well, in this thread, at least).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
