Dear Kathryn,

... What do we have to do in order to get this across to the McCain campaign? Can you get ... all the rest of the “word warriors” and “talk titans” to hammer this point home over the next week? Gaffes, no worries, mate! The medias hate for her only solidifies my support. Bring ‘her on, she can’t be worse than Biden. She does not need to cram & prep, let her rip with what she knows. I’m not supporting her database like she’s some sort of Johnny Mnemonic, I am supporting her character & judgment. I want to see her duke it out with media and spin doctors.

Please, please hammer this home!

I found Obama's relation to his wife somehow - confident, engaging, likeable. I liked it partly because I felt it was part of a genuinely personal relationship in a way, not staged - though in public, to be sure, and knowing that people were watching. I liked the fact he asked her 'how we doing' or 'how you doing' when of course the relevant question was 'how did I do?' - there was something self-effacing about that.

I understand that of course he could not ask that. I am just reflecting on, responding to, the grace that I find that this remarkable man conveys.

I really appreciate cnn for claiming to be nonpartisan and than the post-debate chatter saying things like "tie/McCain slight win" but when they get into the details which obviously insinuate that Obama won.

It's like they are trying to gain back the Republican demographic, but are secretly pandering to the Obama fans (by giving Obama the big wins and McCain lots of small wins, etc...)

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Saturday, 27 September 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

Fox News uses camera angles and split screen so that you can't tell that Obama is talking at him across the stage, it looks like they're both always addressing JL.

12HOOS2012 (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Saturday, 27 September 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I watched it on CNN, and it was honestly pretty boring, both candidates saying stuff we already know, reinstating their points, McCain pissing me off with his "You don't understand" bullshit. I mean, that just sounded disrespectful to me. Far worse than Obama calling him "John" instead of "Senator McCain".

It was funny how after the debate everyone was saying "Oh yeah, there's no clear winner". Me and my dad watched the whole thing and pretty much agreed on that. I mean, even if you hate McCain you have to admit he held his ground here. And then the polls came in saying Obama had won and then I think it was Blitzer that said "Well, you know, once people start saying somebody won, then it picks up steam, and it becomes official" or something of that nature. That kind of upset me, him openly saying how manipulative the whole process is.

I liked listening to the first part on the radio over to my dad's place (he has a TV, i dont), it seemed more timeless and befitting a presidential debate. The CNN shot with the audience reaction thing was bizarre and really difficult to see..

Both candidates lose big-time in the economic policy part of the debate. My dad is pro-McCain and I was leaning toward Obama so whenever sparks would fly we found common ground on the fact that these two are gonna bail out wall street/are corporate whores anyways/we are all fucked/etc.

Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 28 September 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, even if you hate McCain you have to admit he held his ground here.

he kept getting facts wrong, and came across as snide and nasty and impetuous. debates are partly about presenting your manner and personality and he lost here big time. people might think those things don't matter but who would you rather have making judgements and decisions?

caek, Sunday, 28 September 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, I was drunk for this, too -- I'd been doing wine tastings all afternoon and then had a 22 oz of Newcastle and 12 oz of PBR on top of it. Drinking game my girlfriend and I devised included swigs for "Main Street" from either candidate, "Look" from Obama, and "My friends" from McCain, which kept us going. Phrases we also would've drunk to had they had been mentioned: "President of the United States of America" (entire phrase) from Obama and "Vietnam" from McCain (I took a swig for "P.O.W.," anyway).

To be honest, my immediate reaction was that this was pretty much a draw but in a way that was ultimately better for Obama, inasmuch as he proved he could keep up and throw some punches on McCain's putative turf. I'm happy, however, to see Obama seems to have polled much better than that. I probably didn't register McCain's visual "mistakes" as being that significant because a) they seemed like par for the course with him (of course he's going to laugh sarcastically like that, the goon) and b) I was paying more attention to the verbal give-and-take. But on reflection, it seems like the viewers who aren't paying attention to every word -- which is to say most of them -- are going to draw a more favorable impression from Obama's demeanor than from McCain's.

jaymc, Monday, 29 September 2008 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

― you have been yellow carded by an actual referee (J0rdan S.), Friday, September 26, 2008 8:24 PM (2 days ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

I know what you mean -- my girlfriend was shouting "Bridge to Nowhere, Bridge to Nowhere" at the TV -- but I think Obama is wise to lay off Palin and let the media do its job. Plus, earmarks don't have the same resonance for most Americans as "tax cut for the middle class" does.

jaymc, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

i just really really don't get all the "this was really boring" comments here. on so many levels. first of all, because i didn't find it "boring" at all. second, because to the extent that it was "boring", i'd suggest that's to be expected, because it was the first debate, and obama was going to play it very cool and cautious. he's gotta pace himself and not reveal all his lines of attack at this point. plus of course he knows that if he revs up the heat too much in certain ways, he risks setting off all those "oh no black man angry" buttons. i'm fascinated by how obama maintains this delicate balance... assertiveness without rage... how he parries mccain's attacks, how he looks at the big picture and then lasers in on the key points. etc.

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:47 (seventeen years ago)

Keep this for the other two Obama-McCain debates. But make a new thread for the inevitable clusterfuck of a Palin-Biden thread.

I assumed the reason Obama "won" & went up in the polls is because all the undecided voters who still weren't sure abt Obama being "ready to lead" finally realized he is not as inexperienced as they thought -- I think he, way more than McCain, was the one who had to prove to ppl that he could hold his ground
