i have a Mark II Triumph 2000TC, 1972 automatic. she doesn't go, ignition is fucked, but i love her to bits. her name is georgina. does anyone here own a triumph, or better yet, a hillman superminx?

1st car i was ever in a car accident in was a Triumph Herald. & if it hadn't been we probably woulda all got killed - HEAD ON collision but those're solid cars. It was bent into an L-shape, still. so yeah i like em.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuckin' eh for triumphs eh?

my first accident was in georgina. head on. other car was a write off. georgina came off with a small ding and a broken headlight. she is a TANK!!!

she seems to be a crash magnet though. i assume people look at her and go : "old car, who cares?" one crumpled mitzi later and they know never to fuck with old british card ever again.

i am going to get georgina fixed this week. my dad is something of a DIY whizz and he will sort that bitch out. i can't wait to have her on the road.

look out pedestrians!!!!

which makes me think of a new thread: pedestrians: dud or dud?

lady die, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, if you can't drive there, don't go there.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah! or if you think me blasting AM radio out of my window is daggy, think of how you'll look with my radiator sticking out of your rear!

lady die, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

duane you are a funny cunt

lady die, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm dying for someone british to reply to this.

get out of bed you lazy SOB'S!

lady die, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i need a cool car. what i drive now = squarest wheels on the road, a town ace van w/ CURTAINS (blue) on the windows. what kind of statement is that making.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

remember, one can be dodgy in a mobile with curtains.

like something in a meatloaf song really!

lady die, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can, have. but it still looks fuckin sq.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

at least it would never be mistook for a hippy van.

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you mean you've never been tempted to spraypaint a giant marijuana leaf on it?

lady die, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it already has tell-tale "bust me" signs if you look too close. the way it is now tho the cops don't look too carefully...you'd guess it belonged to a lower-income-bracket but honest struggling young family, probably asian immigrants (good 'cause usually = religious)(i oughta get some jesus stickers, that'd complete the look).

duane, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer Magnificent Failures.

OH!! And it's 4-3! And they won't come back from *that*, *surely*...

ehheh...dunno abt triumphs, but my dream brit-heap-barge car is Wolseley 6-110 or Humber Super-Snipe, refitted w/chevy small-block V8 engine. = better fuel consumption + mad thrillz!!! Top tip for ye musos who don't want a van = old-style Saab 900 series.

Upsides = STUPIDLY cheap (my 4-door saloon vers. cost me grand total ov NOTHING!!! Prev owner got offered jag xj6 for 250 quid, & gave Saab away to mechanic, who is a customer of mine) MASSIVE boot/trunk (I fitted 2 5-octave keyboards in lengthways w/out even folding seats down, there was actually room for at least 4 in there...) built like scandinavian tanx0r, reliable, powerful engine etc etc)

Downsides = "space saver" spare wheel (one ov thee stupidest ideas EVER) high insurance (esp if fancy 16 valve version gawd knows how much turbo version would cost to insure) some parts expensive, actually quite hard to drive slowly - one's foot *aches* after a while from resting so lightly on accelerator pedal - also, made to be driven in k-cold climate = heater on all the time - wear light clothing, folks - what is it abt scandinavians - even their cars must be saunas, or s/th??? Errr...there y'go, anyway. Now that I think abt it, I do like the old style "shark- nose" triumph 2000...blah blah...If I had more disp. $$$£££, I'd hunt out a Bristol 410 (circa 8-10k = cheap&nasty new car money) if the Saab drops to bits (unlikely), then I might try to get old Wolseley 1800 "landcrab" & fit the Saab 16-valve engine in that eeehehehehh.......PHE4R, if this ever happens....(skanky & stressful day @ work, in case U hadn't guessed) x0x0

Norman Fay, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

With you on the Saabs, Fay. My dad always used to have them. First car I remember is his cream 99 GLS. Heated seats were wicked at the time. The ignition broke so he had a primitive push button starter fitted. This is about 10 years before it became fashionable with the advent of the Z3. It was quite funny.

He got a couple of 900s and had them converted to LPG in about 93 or so. Top Gear a couple of weeks ago ran a feature on the "exciting new fuel - LPG". Even with a big fuck-off tank of gas in the back you could fit a couple of bikes in.

congrats to Norman Fay and Greg: you guys are officially the petrolheads of ILE.

Respect!

one of my first ever cars was a Trumpy 2.5 TC and i loved it to bits. i had a T bar collision with a ford fiesta coming out of a driveway on a dark and rainy night without looking - the ford smooshed like an overripe banana around the trumpy's mighty steel chassis. and all i had to do was pull the radiator off the fan and away we went back home 4,500km away. freaky coincidence - mine was called george after the man i bought it from.

btw - now i drive a landcrab and love it too... take a look http://www.alphalink.net.au/~sahra/austin.html
