In El Paso County, Colorado, the county clerk -- a delegate to the Republican National Convention -- told out-of-state undergraduates at Colorado College, falsely, that they couldn't vote in Colorado if their parents claim them as dependents on their taxes.

In Montgomery County, Virginia, the county registrar issued a press release warning out-of-state college students, falsely, that if they register to vote in Virginia, they won't be eligible for coverage under their parents' health and car insurance, and that "if you have a scholarship attached to your former residence, you could lose this funding."

In Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, Democratic voters received a mailing containing tear-out requests for absentee ballots addressed to the clerk in Caledonia -- the wrong location. In Middleton, Wisconsin, Democratic voters received absentee ballot requests addressed to the clerk in Madison -- the wrong address. Both mailers were sent by the McCain campaign.

The mailer thing is also happening in New Mexico.

There was an article about how they're expecting voting stations to be overwhelmed in OH, PA, VA.

Casuistry, Monday, 29 September 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

Which I'm totally sure isn't going to mostly affect poor, black neighborhoods.

Casuistry, Monday, 29 September 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

couple of points (if they haven't been made yet). The Obama campaign has been training masses of volunteer lawyers (Young Lawyers for Obama, Lawyers for Obama etc.) on voter protection since January. Those lawyers were involved in outreach already during the primaries. Also, early voting is a big part of dealing with the huge crunch of people expected on 11/4. The campaign has integrated this into their state campaigns for each state that has early voting. Voters in states without early voting are being reminded about absentee. Not to say there won't be problems but the campaign is way ahead of the game. This isn't the DNC anymore, there is some competence here.

Yes, but it is still ridiculous that it would be considered "vaguely newsy" that there could be inadequate funds for running an election, rather than a reason for heads to roll. I still want the UN to oversee this election.

Casuistry, Monday, 29 September 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

What's the cut-off between Young Lawyers for Obama and Lawyers for Obama? Is there an Old Lawyers for Obama or are most old lawyers for McCain?

Alex in SF, Monday, 29 September 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

Funny! I think it's 35. But seriously the Lawyers for Obama are of all ages. I am not a lawyer either - just need to make that clear.

Salon's article on the GOP's voter fraud talking point was pretty good. It reiterates the main point that this isn't voter fraud, it's voter registration fraud for which there are strong mechanisms in place to ferret out well in advance, as proven by the fact that they've already caught it, but also:

Let’s remember, as the Republicans make a furor over the Indiana registrations, that ACORN itself separated out those registrations -- found the 2,000 faulty ones and flagged them for election officials -- in the first place. They try to work with elected officials. The fact is that ACORN has been smeared by the Republican Party. Some of their employees do seem to fake registrations, sure, but when Macy’s has some of their employees stealing from them, we would not call them a quasi-criminal organization -- we still call them a department store. ACORN is trying to help underprivileged people vote.

Behind the GOP's voter fraud hysteria: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/10/15/voter_suppression/
