Paid a visit to the exhibition on Saturday and was utterly underwhelmed. Cathy Wilkes' checkout thing was the most memorable but my money's on Runa Islam.

"Don’t go. Don’t even think about going. This year’s Turner Prize exhibition is without competition the worst in the history of the award." - Financial Times

I should have read this first.

OK, thanks for saving me the money on this one.

I do have to say that nothing has really piqued my interest this year.

Something's gone wrong, they've clearly not caused enough of a controversy this year. ;-)

I'm actually *least* impressed by the Cathy Wilkes.

Mark Leckey is actually the favourite but I love Goshka's work and think Runa Islam is very well curated here.

imagine being underwhelmed by turner prize.

I didn't realise, until I read the FAQs on the wall, that the prize is awarded not for a single piece of work or exhibition but for the artist's overall contribution over the last twelve months.

I wasn't especially "impressed" by Cathy Wilkes' exhibit but apart from Goshka Mahuga's Mies van der Rohe-esque glass sculpture it was the only one that I found even vaguely affecting.

Actually the shortlist is selected on the basis of a couple of key shows and the balance of the decision rests on what shortlisteds do with the Tate Britain exhibition space.

this has to be the worst one for ages.

at least you had mike nelson last year.

mensrightsguy (internet person), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

Leckey's was the best fuck off/don't try it anti-acceptance speech I've ever heard.

Successful poll

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 12:24 (sixteen years ago)

Such base levels do they meet: once upon a time the TP got an hour's special on C4 complete with KLF adverts in the breaks - now they're lucky to nab five minutes off the end of C4 News.

Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 12:26 (sixteen years ago)

NO NO NO Mark Wallinger won last year, not Mike Nelson.

This was a no-brainer: Liverpudlian had to win in 2008, he's good too. Although Goshka Macuga (ex flatmate of friend, so stylish it hurts) does good work and made a great film shown after C4 news last week sometime, seek it out.

Mark Leckey did more Thumbs Aloft in five minutes on C4 than fellow Scouse Wacky Macca has in the past decade.

Meat ROFL (suzy), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:32 (sixteen years ago)

I thought it was Nick Cave who was doing the Thumbs Aloft thing

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

It's high time Nick did a Wacky Fab Gear singalong album. I'll give him Denny Laine's number if he needs it.

Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

They were all at it with the thumbs.

Oh! Nick Cave - who I have never liked due to songs about cutting up bitchez x 1000 - looks more like G. Gordon Liddy as the years pass. He also had an unfortunate posture which seemed to say "Look! My COMBOVER!"

Meat ROFL (suzy), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the look's just not working anymore, Nick

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

It's sort of like Kendo Nagasaki meets Arthur Scargill at the moment.

Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

He's trying to kickstart 70s revival obviously

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

The 'tache is on the Liddy/Mercury spectrum and I can totally visualize Nick Cave trying to man up with his palm over an open flame, so Liddy FTW.
