The full line is "You weren't there, you never were," which actually makes complete sense.

there are a lot of bad songs out there, but most of them don't make me wince the way this does.

It seems like the verses of this song are deliberately "bad" in that a pirate drinking song is kind of the opposite of the "in the zone" dance-pop-rock chorus.
