Tell Nicole What to Buy. (April)

I am finally finished with a horrific semester of classes and finally have the chance to read a book. I'm looking for some fiction, but not something that's loaded with angst and depression (since I've had enough of that this semester). On the other hand I don't want one of those cheerfully bubbleheaded chick-lit novels either...any suggestions?

Yayyay Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, well OK that's got a bit of angst in it but it's quite sweet in the end, aaaw. or The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy. OR "Our Spoons came from Woolworths" by Barbara Comyns which has angst here and there as well but it all turns out OK in the end. or The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim which is bubbleheaded chicklit from the 1920s!!!

well, as usual i'll suggest:

nicola barker ~ wide open
victor pelevin ~ babylon/clay machine gun
donald antrim ~ hundred brothers/the verificationist
iain sinclair ~ radon daughters (reading this at the moment, but on hold while i sort stuff out - cant concentrate on books at minute)

Read the Bagthorpe Saga by Helen Creswell! Sure, they're children's books, but they're also hella funny.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I sent you my novel, Nicole, read that! ;-) Though of course I'm quite cheerfully bubbleheaded.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am going to read it Ned! I plan to print it out today -- last night I finished up my project, a 62 page index so I can now give it my full attention. But it shouldn't take me too long to read (no offense -- I tend to read pretty quickly).

Donald Barthelme - Snow White

Ah! I read these when I was 9 or 10 and occasionally try to remember what they were called. So. Cheers.

Er, I have no suggestions as I've hardly read anything lately, but please keep posting, everyone, I don't want to work, I have to make my CSS do lots of pixel-perfect alignment stuff that CSS isn't supposed to do and unsurprisingly enough it's refusing, and one of my usual time-wasting methods appears to have been blocked (oops).

I thought the Bagthorpe Sagas were a load of RUB, certainly don't read THAT! Read the flipping Moomin books if anything and then post on L'amour a Trois thread heh heh. Actually read the WELL OF LONELINESS which I haf just started to read, it is about a lesbiang feeling tortured and tormented and confused etc etc it is a top notch yarn. Certainly don't get Infinite Jest grrr.

Blah blah tennis blah blah a mang dressed as a womang blah blah trudge trudge blah blah DERE GOD I AM NOT EVEN A QUARTER OF THE WAY THROUGH YET hmph I tried but it's pants. Perhaps I will like it once it is finished .

Sarah, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

b-b-but The Well of Loneliness = ANGST ON A STICK surely?

katie, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes but at least its full on revelling in it angstXoR. Ok well it is actually DEAD DEPRESSING but it is making me feel happier because I am a miserable get yay. I want to go home and stock up on GIN and FANTA LIMON mmmm.

Sarah, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

IJ is overrated, and you'll be annoyed at the end sarah (although it isn't actually a bad book i wouldn't really recommend it)

gareth, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's annoying enough anyway.

Sarah, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, read _The Color Of Magic_ by Terry Pratchett.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What Dan said. You might have a fit because of some of the puns, though.

no offense -- I tend to read pretty quickly

Same here -- one of my greatest gifts, hurrah!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I read the Well of Loneliness ages ago, in fact I have the first edition which I got for 40 cents at a book sale. Still a good recommendation though (but a bit on the angst-y side of things).

Nicole, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another vote for Norwegian Wood.

Michael Daddino, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And another one!

Josh, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don DeLuise's Goldilocks

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We have a winner! You silly Murakami boosters, do you not know the power of the Dom?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dom was on TV today! I thought of you, Nicole.

Alan Warner - The Man who Walks

Ed, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hasn't Norwegian Wood already won? If not then I'll add a further vote. Go Haruki!!

Jonnie, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, Norwegian Wood it is! I will be off to the book store after work today.
